[h=1]13-04-21: Community Health Fair 2013[/h]Taken at Hougang Mall

Over 300 members of the public attended the Community Health Fair organised by the newly-formed Aljunied-Hougang Punggol East Town Council. The event - consisting of static displays and talks by surgeons and nutritionists from Mount Elizabeth Hospital - educated senior citizens on the symptoms of common illnesses such as diabetes and colorectal cancer as well as prevention of such illnesses through the maintenance of a healthy diet. A dialogue was held after the talk, which answered various concerns such as colonoscopy risks and ‘healthy carbohydrates’.

Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) kits were given out to residents aged 50 years and above during the event. Volunteers from the constituency committees of Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC and Punggol East SMC, as well as volunteers from the Singapore Cancer Society were present to educate the residents on the correct usage of the kits.

Punggol East residents who attended the event felt that it was well-organised, and that they gained important insights on cancer and nutrition. Madam Ke, a housewife who lives in Rivervale Crescent, had little knowledge of colorectal cancer before the event. She said: “Senior citizens like us do not have easy access to such information as we are not IT savvy. Information provided by the static display is also easily understood, and through the display, I have actually learnt more about prevention of illnesses such as colorectal cancer.”

Echoing her views, Mr. Tan, a retiree living in Rivervale Drive, praised the organisation of the event. He said, “The health fair has surpassed my expectations as it did not merely distributed FOBT kits; we (residents) had a platform to seek professional medical advice with regards to our current health problems such as toe infection (a first symptom of diabetes) during the dialogue.”

Despite the slight drizzle in the morning, the PECC One Day Family Trip started as planned and we moved off towards our first location on time.

Li Lian kicked off the day by welcoming residents on board and giving them a short introduction of the day's itinerary.

Spent my Sunday with residents on a family day-trip. I was surprised to find amongst the residents, these 12 year-old youths traveling without their parents!

[h=1]13-05-05: One Day Family Trip[/h]<abbr title="Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 11:08am" data-utime="1368068924" class="timestamp"></abbr>

Around 300 Punggol East residents participated in the One Day Family Tour, which took place on Sunday, 5 May 2013. The tour – a first of many of such tours to come for residents - was organised and led by volunteers from the Punggol East Constituency Committee.

The journey started off with a visit to the Kranji Countryside. Residents had the chance to see how crops such as wheatgrass, cactus and aloe vera are grown by high-technology farms in Singapore during the tour of Kin Yan Agrotech. During the visit to the Qian Hu fish farm, residents were also treated to ‘fish spa’ and ‘longkang fishing’ at discounted prices. Following the tour of the Kranji Countryside, residents proceeded by bus to Marina Barrage for lunch. The scenic Marina Barrage provided a photo moment for many of them and a group shot of all residents participating in the tour was taken.

After lunch, residents enjoyed a stroll around the themed gardens of the Gardens by the Bay and learnt how plants are linked to Singapore’s culture. Before heading home, we made a short trip to Kampong Glam, where we had the opportunity to understand and appreciate Malay culture through visits to the Malay Heritage Centre and the Sultan Mosque. Throughout the journey, residents found opportunities to interact with MP Lee Li Lian.

Despite the stormy weather throughout the day, residents remained upbeat and enjoyed the tour. Mr Guay, a 58 year old resident said that the Kranji Countryside was a pleasant experience for him. He said, “The visit to Kin Yan Agrotech was enjoyable as we got to see first-hand how Singapore farms grow such crops. But of course, I also enjoyed purchasing products from the farm!” Another resident, Mr Low added, “Unfortunately we do not get to visit the Kranji Countryside and other attractions due to the distance (from where I stay). Today was thus a good moment to catch up with old memories.”

Ticket sales for the Family Tour began on 8 April 2013. Due to overwhelming response, all tickets to the Tour were sold out on 15 April 2013. However, according to Legislative Assistant to Li Lian, Ms Ng Swee Bee, residents do not have to be disappointed for too long. She said: “The Constituency Committee will be working hard to organise more of such trips and we hope that all residents who missed out on our Family Tour will keep a look out for our one day tour to Muar, Malaysia.”
