It is very unlikely that he retired as a BG.
Even Goh retired as a Colonel.
At that time, only Patrick Choy was promoted to BG in the Armour.

By the way, in the old days (not sure about what is the situation after 1981), there are no hponourary ranks, but it is referred to as Local Ranks. For example, CPT Gwee Peng Hong (now also known as Phillip) was an OC in the First Commando Battalion. The SAF posted him to be CO 1 SIR and promoted him to local Major and he declined (If as a captain, I am good enough to be CO, I do not need to be a local Major), but about one year later he was promoted to Major ( his fellow officers from first batch OCS, Neo Poh Chuan {retired as Colonel} and Chow Giak Piak were Majors and were CO of 3 SIR and 4 SIR.
Another officer, may be from 5th batch OCS, and was a CPT and Brigade S2 during my time, Yeo Cheng Ann (recently also known as Alan) was promoted to Colonel. He was given the rank of local BG, when he was serving with the UN Force in Middle East. To be promoted to a Colonel in those days is a very significant achievement for those with O or A levels.

Unfortunately, in a GRC system, no matter how fucked up a PAP candidate is, if he/she is herded into a 'safe' GRC, mission accomplished.

It's the voters that should know better. Why vote for a fuck up as yr MP? The reverse can also be true. A fuck up candidate will pull the team down. Case in point, the nicole seah effect. It's up to the ppl to decide. I realise that singkies oppo loves to complain about Gerrymandering and pap is unfair etc tat why they cant win. However the elephant in the room is never mentioned and that is the voters themselves. If the voters vote against pap. How the pap Gerrymanders also no use. But everytime...voters will give excuses on why they vote pap. Even though they kpkb pap all the time. Think back to the past on all the excuses on why oppies loose and to me it no longer holds water. All in all the culprit is the voter. They want a fuck up person to be their MP. Sinkies in general ie majority dont give excuses for voting PAP. They love PAP.

If it was GE2015 or earlier, I would gladly have represented the party. Now, age is catching up with me and I would like to spend more time with the wife now that the kids have grown up. I'm quite happy to serve PAP and Singapore in the grassroots and trade unions.

honestly nothing against poly chaps
know many of them who come from humble or disadvantaged backgrounds
some are even better friends than those uni friends
but there are some like this ivan sort of chaps who simply think that their disadvantaged backgrounds are a source of pride after they make some achievements in life.
