Keechiu converses with students.

Conversation with students -
Student A: Minister, sometimes we don’t get our full recess break…
Me: Why?
Student A: Because our class couldn’t queue up properly…
Me: Why couldn’t the class queue up properly?
Conversation lit up with many responses …
Student B: Because some boys were naughty…
Student C: Because some didn’t cooperate…
Me: So what should we do?
Student D: Punish the naughty ones…
Student E: Punish the whole class…
Student F: Find out why they don’t want to cooperate…
Student G: Maybe some of them need help…
Student H: Make the uncooperative one the leader who is responsible to get the rest in line!
An interesting discussion with students, who had different perspectives on how to deal with the situation.
When should it be a collective responsibility Vs individual responsibility?
When should the teacher step in and when should we allow the class to manage the situation and learn?
Every situation can be learning moment. Am cheered by our children’s ability to appreciate different perspectives and come up with their own creative solutions.
Beyond individual responsibility, it was also good to hear them discuss the spirit of “one for all and all for one” — how they can help their friends do better, and the actions they can take instead of simply relying on others.
What a fruitful conversation that started with one of them sharing that it’s hard to get everyone to line up properly when going for recess!
Visiting schools and talking to our students is always fun and meaningful

The training participation rate of our workforce increased from 35% to about 50% last year
1f44f_1f3fb.png

More people and companies have been stepping up to upskill since the launch of the SkillsFuture Movement in 2015, and these are encouraging results.
I hope more of us will come on board — inspiring examples include Switzerland and Sweden, where more than 60% of working adults in learn something new every year!
At the launch of SkillsFuture SG’s SkillsFuture Festival (SFF) 2022, I shared 3 strategies that we need to upskill our workforce at scale:
1️⃣
Articulate companies’ demand for future skills.
2️⃣
Aggregate the sector demand for future skills.
3️⃣
Activate supply of future skills through quality, industry-relevant training.
I encourage all of you to participate actively in the diverse learning experiences that SFF 2022 has to offer - let us embrace learning at every life stage

My heartiest congratulations to Professor Tommy Koh and Professor Wang Gungwu on being conferred honorary degrees by National University of Singapore, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Singapore and the world.
About 7,500 NUS students will receive Bachelor’s degrees and more than 6,000 will receive graduate degrees across a series of 28 graduation ceremonies.
To our graduands: Well done! You have come this far after years of hard work, forging cherished relationships along the way with classmates and faculty. May you continue to support and enrich one another’s lives as you progress through life.
While today’s world is fraught with uncertainty, I am confident that you will be able to navigate the winds of change, and rise above. Keep learning, keep improving, and you will surely thrive. Wishing you every success!

Keechiu truly admires students’ creativity and desire to solve problems!

I truly admire our students’ creativity and desire to solve problems!
Anders who was from SCSS Network-Swiss Cottage Secondary School, and many other students who had a chance to take Design and Technology as a subject in secondary school, would have learned the principles of Design Thinking.
Students learn to identify and solve problems using a human-centric approach. They also reframe these issues after empathising with their users’ concerns and researching their needs. These skills are so valuable for life and for their future!
I hope that our students continue to take these skills further, and aspire to change the world for the better.

Keechiu visited Holy Innocents’ High School.

Enjoyed joining students of Holy Innocents’ High School for their morning assembly! Was glad to see students streaming in for the start of school at 8am all ready for Term 3 after the June holidays.
Calvin and Li Hua guided me through the Augmented Reality (AR) trail in the school’s eco garden. Together with 6 other Journalism and Broadcast CCA mates, they volunteered to bring this project to life. They researched the garden’s past, drew images and on top of that, picked up coding to use the AR maker — truly commendable effort! The AR stations liven up the school and encourage student participation in school life.
May the students recognise that everyone is gifted in different ways. We are here to help them understand their gifts, grow and do justice to their gifts for the betterment of themselves and others.

Keechiu shares 3 phrases.

Chan Chun Sing added 3 new photos.

8 July at 17:26 ·
It is important that school leaders actively shape the culture in our schools, to develop confident, connected learners who are curious and learn for life.
This would entail taking time to look at what we need to change, to start, to stop and to let go.
I think these 3 phrases adapted from an article by Michael Arnold encapsulates well what is needed to achieve this:
1️⃣
Know the way – look further and have a deeper understanding of how the world is evolving and how the context for work is changing
2️⃣
Show the way – review priorities, plans and share them with the team
3️⃣
Go the way – support educators in what they need, and role model what needs to be done
Enjoyed engaging local and international school leaders and educators at the 13th Global Educational Leadership Conference.
By jointly rallying behind our shared vision, I am confident that our schools can ignite the sparkle in the eyes of students and educators alike.

Selamat Hari Raya Haji!
Wishing all Muslims a blessed celebration with family and friends. Semoga semua saudara Islam kita selamat meraikan hari ini bersama keluarga dan sahabat handai.
This year, there was opportunity for Singaporean Muslims to make their Haj pilgrimage after a pause due to the pandemic. I hope the season has been a good and blessed one for our Muslim friends. May the Singaporean pilgrims have a safe and fruitful journey as well.

Keechiu shared with his colleagues three aspects of culture the Public Service must focus on.

Chan Chun Sing added 6 new photos.

We have faced an unprecedented public health challenge in the last two and a half years. And it is not over yet.
I am extremely proud of all our public officers who have been working relentlessly to stabilise the COVID-19 situation, and more. A big thank you to everyone for your hard work to protect and improve the lives of fellow Singaporeans.
We are, however, entering a new era filled with uncertainties, disruptions, and complexity. A world with an uncertain geopolitical order. A global economy that is volatile and facing fundamental change.
At the One Public Service Observance Ceremony yesterday, I shared with our colleagues three aspects of culture the Public Service must focus on:
1️⃣
“Uncertainties require Agility” - in an era of greater uncertainties and change, no single structure and organisation can cater for all scenarios. We need to be agile in organisation and mindset to tackle these challenges.
2️⃣
“Complexities require Collaboration” - In an era where challenges are becoming more complex, no amount of individual capability is sufficient. We need collaborative, multipronged approaches to address multifaceted challenges.
3️⃣
“Disruptions require Lifelong Learning” - In an era of constant change and disruptions, whatever we learn in school can become quickly outdated. No amount of prior learning before graduation will be enough. We need everyone to continually learn and reskill to take on future changes and challenges.
The Public Service plays an important role to steer Singapore as we head into this new era.
Happy Public Service Week!
