When I ask students what they like most about school, PE lessons and playing sports usually come out tops.
Not only are sports great fun for our students, they help to build confidence and discipline. Students get to learn about the importance of leadership and teamwork, and become more resilient by experiencing successes and failures.
Today marks an exciting start to Term 2, as Ministry of Education, Singapore is resuming all 29 sports of the National School Games (NSG). In line with the latest SportsSG guidelines, team sports will be played in their respective standard formats, except rugby which will be played in a sevens format instead of 15-a-side.
We are working with the sports councils and schools to ensure the safety of students and staff, and safe management measures in line with national posture are in place. Rolling substitutions, reduction in playing time and increased rest intervals may also be employed where necessary to help student athletes ease back into full competition.
This has been a long awaited moment for our student athletes, who have put in tremendous effort in preparation for the Games. Go forth and do your very best!

Keechiu congratulates EHL.

Congratulations to Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) on the establishment of your Singapore campus – the first international campus out of Switzerland.
In addition to the Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management, EHL Campus (Singapore) plans to offer online certificates and short courses for adult learners.
Notably, EHL is working with Institute of Technical Education, Singapore to develop a new Technical Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management. This will provide a new pathway for those keen to pursue a career in hospitality, leveraging both Swiss hospitality education excellence and ITE’s distinctive applied learning approach.
I look forward to EHL enriching the diversity of the tertiary education landscape in Singapore and further expand opportunities for #LifelongLearning. This includes scaling up courses in adult education in order to reach out to many others who would like to upskill in the hospitality industry.

Keechiu is concerned about water. :cautious:

This article from The Straits Times on 23 April 1963 is a stark reminder of an alternative reality that could face Singapore.
In the 1960s, as part of water rationing during prolonged droughts, Singapore was divided into 7 zones, with each zone receiving no water supply for 6 hours, 4 times a week. Unimaginable in today’s Singapore, where clean water readily flows from our taps!
More recently, the Linggiu Reservoir which supplies water to Singapore from the Johor River saw its water levels drop below 50% in 2015 and hit a historic low of 20% in 2016 due to dry weather conditions.
According to the World Resources Institute, Singapore is the fifth most likely country in the world to face extremely high water stress by 2040, due to #ClimateChange and other challenges.
Let us remember that water is precious and encourage our young to #MakeEveryDropCount.

Keechiu visits Bukit Merah Secondary School.

It is never easy getting our youths to open up to us and share how they feel.
But what if Artificial Intelligence (AI) can lend a helping hand in building this bond?
Experienced Facial Analysis Correlation of Emotions (FACE) firsthand at “Safe Pod – A Wellness Gym” during my visit to Bukit Merah Secondary School. FACE uses AI to give insight to one’s emotional wellness, and is specially designed for Asian ethnicity from youth to seniors.
The system helps to pick up how students might be feeling through analysis of their facial expressions, which can then guide counsellors to pose relevant questions that might elicit responses reflecting how students truly feel. This sensitises counsellors to underlying emotions that might not be readily apparent from observation, and which students might not proactively share. I was told that it has 93% accuracy!
Also came across some students who were having fun at their “MasterChef” outdoor cooking competition – the food looked good

By creating more avenues to understand and connect with our students, and appealing to their interests through diverse and fun activities, we hope to provide a school environment that supports and nurtures them in this important stage of their lives.
