Keechiu congratulates students in international competitions.

Chan Chun Sing

40 mins ·
My heartiest congratulations to our students for making Singapore proud with such stellar achievements in international competitions covering a broad spectrum of subjects this year — geography, informatics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics! The resilience, determination and passion that the students have showcased throughout the trainings and preparations for these competitions is truly commendable.
Would also like to thank the Teachers and instructors who have put in tremendous efforts to work with the students to realise their fullest potential. In spite of the fact that most of the international competitions had to be held online this year, and there were various constraints due to #COVID19, the unwavering spirit of our students and teachers shone through.
Well done, everyone!

My Buona Vista Place, an upgraded senior activity centre at 117 Commonwealth Drive, reopens today.
The refurbished centre, a community project by Singapore Pools In The Community and Buona Vista Citizens’ Consultative Committee, now provides a more vibrant and spacious environment for My Buona Vista seniors to keep them engaged and socially connected safely, whilst picking up new skills and knowledge through various programmes. The centre also has a study and recreational area dedicated to students and youths, and they can participate in inter-generational programmes with our seniors.
Thankful to our wonderful partner Singapore Pools for their generous contribution and collaboration with The People's Association colleagues, grassroots leaders and volunteers to create an even warmer and more inclusive community. CCS

Had a most enjoyable afternoon with Ariz, Rayves, Dillon, Nathan and Gessica, exploring the Children’s Festival 2021 at Gardens by the Bay.
The Art-Zoo Wonder Gardens features an outdoor trail with inflatable sculptures, and lots of art activities for children to explore.
There are also stunning glass installations and sculptures by American artist Chihuly Studio, which are on display till 3 Oct 2021.
Let us all make time for our families this September school holiday, to explore the many interesting sights and activities around Singapore, and to rest and recharge. CCS

Keechiu wishes NTUC Happy 60th Birthday.

Chan Chun Sing

NTUC Singapore turns 60 today. Six decades of the Labour Movement firmly by the side of our working people.
It was my immense privilege to serve as NTUC Secretary-General from 2015 to 2018, working closely together with different generations of our sisters and brothers from the Labour Movement. We strove to expand the network to represent all working people in Singapore as well as curate and deliver timely training for them.
Our sisters and brothers are at the core of everything NTUC. Through the decades, they have partnered Singaporeans to uplift them and develop a relationship with the Labour Movement, from before they begin work, whilst they are working, when they are transitioning between careers and all the way until they retire.
Always relevant, forever advancing the interests of our working people. Happy 60th birthday! CCS

Keechiu visited Woodgrove Primary School.

I could hear the cheers of delight from the Pri 1 students, even before I reached the classroom during my recent visit to Woodgrove Primary School.
Mdm Ang Soh Kim was dressed in a bear suit, while Ming Kai led the class in choral reading of the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt”
Dressing up is a common sight at the school, where students are encouraged to bring or make their own props, as part of the Applied Learning Programme. The school also encourages students to take centre stage in the school canteen to talk about topics of their choice, through the regular “Open Mike” sessions during recess.
Other teaching pedagogies to motivate students to express themselves include “Hot Seating” where a student assumes the role of a character from a story, with the rest of the class posing questions to the “hot seater” to recount a specific event, and uncover multiple perspectives.
Was glad to see that these innovative and hands-on approaches had students highly engaged in the classrooms. More importantly, they instil greater confidence in public speaking – a skill that will serve them well throughout life. CCS

Keechiu announces changes to primary one registration framework.

Chan Chun Sing

4 hrs ·
Revisions to the Primary 1 Registration Framework have always been guided by the interests of our children and community.
This includes practical considerations such as allowing our children to have convenient access to a school near their homes; providing a rich school experience where they study alongside classmates from diverse backgrounds; and recognising the efforts of our community, such as school alumni who have contributed to the development of a school and its culture.
In recent years, we have observed that the number of students without affiliation who successfully enrols in a school near their homes has declined.
Hence Ministry of Education, Singapore has reviewed the Framework to look at how we can best ensure that our schools remain accessible to children from different backgrounds, while taking into consideration the perspectives and varying needs of parents. Fundamentally, we need to strike a careful balance between building a strong community for our schools and providing convenience for the child and family. It is not an easy balance to strike, and there is certainly no perfect balance. But we believe that it is timely to take another step towards ensuring our schools remain open to a diverse profile of children.
With these in mind, MOE will be making changes to the framework which will see the doubling of reserved places in Phase 2C, from 20 to 40 places in each primary school. Consequently, we will combine Phases 2A1 and 2A2 into a single Phase 2A to continue to recognise all school alumni regardless of their membership with alumni association.
Let us support these changes to keep our schools open and inclusive, and enable our children to have convenient access to schools near their homes. This will enhance the well-being of families, and build a stronger and more cohesive society. CCS

Keechiu visits Zhonghua Secondary School.

Chan Chun Sing added 4 new photos.

Our schools have always played a pivotal role in Singapore’s national and social development.
This is embodied in the history of Zhonghua Secondary School, which spans more than a century. A Chinese girls’ school at its inception in 1911 with only 10 students, it provided girls with the valuable opportunity to have an education in our early years.
The school has evolved through the generations, to keep pace with societal changes, and meet the needs of our people. Today, Zhonghua is a school where boys and girls of all races, and from all walks of life can further their knowledge and experience joy in learning.
Congratulations to Zhonghua on your 110th anniversary! May the school continue to help our students fulfill their potential, and nurture our leaders of tomorrow.
愿中华像一棵百年老树,枝繁叶茂,茁壮成长;在未来培育更多人才,为共同建设更强大的新加坡尽一份力。
