Olympics Disastrous Opening Ceremony

Read my sentence again. note the "or". nobody is silly enough not to have insurance for such a massive event. Its the entertainment impact of the move.

FYI, the Barcelona "arrow" actually missed the target on that fateful day and the cauldron was lighted by "contingency flame" engineered to avoid the said embarrassment. You may wish to check it out.

I think the barcelona arrow hit the target, what nonsense is he talking about?

The mascots already tell you it is all meant to be a ridiculous and meaningless Olympics joke.

you have to give the director the job, but someone higher up must check it, china one is meticulously check and double check by party members, i am quite sure UK MP did not check carefully enough. The stupid video for queen and mr bean piss me off so much.

WTF do politicians know about artistic direction? Anyway, no matter how many times they "check", facetiousness is deeply embedded in the British consciousness. Just look at their parliament:

the brits are the only ones cool enough to inject humour into this ceremony, since its inception.

humor is overated, especially in an opening of olympic.

Hey scroobal, there are people in this forum who think the barcelona arrow missed the cauldron, can you believe that? they think the idea is to hit the cauldron with arrow. Jesus, are you sure these people has gone through the great singapore education system, or they let retard surf the web nowadays, instead of giving them help.

Guys

Seriously i did not plan this thread. The actual plan was this - get kuachee, peanuts, beer ready for the most spectacular show in the world that comes along every 4 years. An oscar winning director given the task whose films are not your run of the mill stuff but well crafted. He is no flash in the plan chap either. Typical British quality and loads of quality.

After Beijing, the bar though raised very high should not be out of reach to a culture that gave us many things from enginnering, science and the arts. The language half the Worlds speaks for all these discplines is English. Our school system is raised on this.

At the 25min mark, I realised something was going wrong. Thats how this thread started. I started as a believer and I was truly disappointed.

The people who paid to go to the stadium were short-changed. The marching contingents of the stars were short changed. The world were short-changed. Its the event that the young ones first learn about other countries and cultures. It was not to be.

He could have started with a dazzling show and used both daylight and night, yet he squeezed everything in the night in an English long summer. He could not work out a way to introduce the British icons and showcase their culture yet keep the event entertaining and flowing. He could not even get them to coordinate their dances.

If the word spectacular has to be used as a must for any Olympics Opening Ceremony then it has to be a spectacular failure.

get your facts right.
no, the arrow did not missed the target. It actually lit up the cauldron. the caudron was gas fired and the gas was turn up full blast and all you need it just a lit match stick any where near it the the cauldron would burst into flames. this was told to me by the spanish olympics people when I ask them. they are not so stupid unlike sinkies would like to jump to conclusions.

you think he is suppose to hit the cauldron with the arrow??

It is used to light the gas, start the fire. Not to shoot hole in the cauldron.

I cannot believe people even think that is a miss.
dear korkor, don't get angry leh,
i only showed that the arrow actually missed the cauldron as many pple thought it did hit the cauldron, i did not said it was unplanned.

"In Barcelona in 1992, Antonio Rebollo, an archer shot a flaming arrow over the cauldron to light it. Though Rebollo intentionally overshot the cauldron,[31] his arrow still lit it by igniting the gas rising from the cauldron."

The point is that no one expected an archer's arrow to light the fire (whether hole in one, missed, intentionally missed, all an illusion is not the point). It had a powerful impact and the use of an ancient sport brought home the point about how poignant the games have been all these decades and how relevant to the Games itself. Archery afterall has been an integral part of the games.

It went exactly as they planned, if the idea is to hit the top part of cauldron, then the trajectory will totally be different. it is not missed, it is not intent as hole in one.
