In history, many GOOD people/ leaders turned very greedy person or dictators while staying on power for long.
National heroes died early, otherwise they were not called heroes.

Marcos, Suharto, Nay Win... many leaders rise up to serve country and people when called upon, but many if not all failed when they stayed on power for long.
