My Friend Jocelyn

So is HK so what's your point? You said that the HK govt was anti gambling but a quick check revealed that it was number 6 on the list of gambling sin cities.

My stand on gambling is simple. It's a personal choice. People who choose to mess up their lives only have themselves to blame.

HK doesnt have a casino..hk govt is wiser than the pap

Obviously gambling is a personal choice. But a wise govt will not want to legalise gambling.

Reading Playboy, chewing gum are also personal choices. Why does the pap ban Playboy and chewing gum and legalise casinos?

"Better business for pawn shops as customers raise quick cash for gambling
By Sharon See |
SINGAPORE: The opening of the casino in Singapore has led to better business for some pawn shops.

Pawn shops said they are seeing more customers, especially older folks, who said they are pawning their valuables to raise cash for gambling.

While the number of such customers is small, pawn shop owners said it will rise in the coming months.

However, some industry players have expressed concern.

They feel pawn-broking is meant to help people tide over urgent times, rather than a means to raise quick cash.

We all know the answer to that one. Playboy mag brings in no revenue. Neither does chewing gum.

Record pawn shop loans

According to the Department of Statistics’ Monthly Digest of Statistics Singapore June 2012, pawn shop loans increased by its greatest margin ever in history.

338,600 pledges in just 1 month (11,286 per day, 940 per hour per 12 hours)

Pledges at pawnshops increased from 2.98 in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2011, and was 338,600 in the month of March 2012 alone.

81% increase in loans

The amount of loans given out increased from $2.7 to $4.9 billion and $622 million, respectively.

This means that the amount of loans from pawn shops increased by a whopping 81 per cent in 2011.

$622 m loans in just 1 month
(A cool $20 million per day!)

At the current all-time record high of $622 million in just one month, the total in a year may hit seven billion.

So, why is it that so many people pawn their items for so much more loans from pawn shops?

no..her hubby is a Singaporean chinese. The truly good looking and chio SG gals go for real Singaporeans.

Actually that is true. A vast majority of the SG girls who actually marry ang mos are plain at best with many downright ugly!

No it isn't. More than a million HK residents per year board gambling ships every night at 6 pm to return the next morning. Genting travel thanks the HK govt for the revenue.

dont envy the ang mohs. most of their gals are 2nd hand goods, hand me downs.

not many SG guys will accept such trashed and used goods. the ang mohs dont care abt used goods

u dont get the difference between allowing personal choices and legalising a vice?

dont u see the wisdom of HK govt?

allowing its citizens to go away to gamble is very different from building a casino on home turf

so that debunks your argument abt personal choices.

it's all abt pap's greed

Personal choices is my take on the matter. When it comes to government policy, ALL governments are hypocrites.

Ask yourself why alcohol is allowed to flourish, advertise, sponsor activities including sports while mere possession of relatively harmless dope is a crime. Alcohol kills more people, causes more misery, breaks up more families, harms more unborn children than any other drug. It's even worse than gambling.

u can have your take.

many singaporeans are asking why ban so many unharmful things but yet legalise gambling. the pap has no choice now but to review many of its banned policies.

the pap cant admit that it made a mistake with the casinos. it now has to do damage control.

Are you saying that the pap is morally right to ban chewing gum and yet legalise casinos in SG?

I must say you wrong at this. In Aussieland, alcohol cause more death, injury and violence then all the vices combined now. Yet, it is socially acceptable to be seen drinking rather then say smoking now. Its all about control. Don't let these things control you. There are no real rights or wrong. Aussieland legalised gambling much sooner and earlier then Singapore. Same with prostitution and all the other vices. However, they got things more or less under control and got some revenue out of it, instead of it going fully to the "underworld". They even allowed smoking in high rollers room but banned smoking everywhere else in the casino, what does it tells you their objectives are then?

not sure how u derived at this

no addiction is right. r u saying that the pap is right to legalise casino gambling in SG?

the pap has opened a pandora's box.

see post #175.

the pap has lost its moral authority to ban anything with its legalisation of casinos.

it shows that the pap lacks foresight to know the deeper implications when it discussed abt new policies. casino is one issue, the pap leaders didnt have the intellect to foresee the bad effects of liberal influx of cheap foreign labour.

now the pap is trying to mitigate the damages of these bad policies and their lack of foresight.

many policies will be reviewed.

it's tough working for an indecisive and weak leader like LHL
