"... Istana Kampong Gelam, is a former Malay Palace in Singapore It is located near Masjid Sultan in Kampong Glam. The Tunku Ali built Istana Kampong Glam in 1840 at Sultan Gate. Tengku Ali was only recognized as Sultan of Singapore by the British, in 1855. .
The original Istana Kampong Glam was built by Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor in 1819 on land of about 23 hectares (57 acres) in Kampong Glam that had been given to him by the British East India Company."..

..."The development of the Japanese enclave in Singapore was connected to the establishment of brothels east of the Singapore River, namely along Hylam, Malabar, Malay and Bugis Streets during the late 1890s.The Japanese prostitutes or Karayuki-san dubbed Malay Street as Suteretsu, a transliteration of the English word "street". A Japanese reporter in 1910 described the scene for the people of Kyushu in a local newspaper, the Fukuoka Nichinichi"....
