Today is #WorldFamilyDoctorDay. It was first proposed by the World Organization of Family Doctors in 2010, to commemorate the special role and contributions of family doctors all around the world.
Our family doctors do important work. I like the translation in Chinese, which is 全科医生.
全科 literally translates to “all body systems or domains”. This breadth of understanding enables family doctors to coordinate and optimise the care plan and recovery journey for a patient including overseeing preventive care, the treatment of acute conditions, and chronic disease management.
With #HealthierSG, we will elevate the importance of family doctors to fulfill these roles. Happy World Family Doctor Day!

OYK visited London and Manchester.

On my way to attend the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, I made a visit to London.
Met with various people, including Will Quince, Minister of State for Health and Sir Patrick Vallance, who was the Chief Scientific Advsior to the UK government. Sir Patrick was deeply involved in the fight against COVID-19 and has now taken on a new role as chair of the Natural History Museum.
I then made a side trip to Manchester, UK to meet with Mayor Andy Burnham.
He was a former Health Minister, before running for Mayor. Manchester is the only region in the UK where aspects of healthcare policy were devolved to the Mayor. He is now exercising his devolved powers to improve health in Manchester. Like Singapore, preventive care and ageing in place are key areas of focus.

His shirt sleeves are about 1.5 to 2 cm too short, because about 1 cm of tge sleeves should extend beyond the sleeves of his suit jacket.

OYK had a few busy days.

Had a few busy days at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.
There were many formal and informal discussions on pandemic preparedness, in particular, vaccine equity between nations. I spoke up for the interest of small states like Singapore.
There were also many discussions on ageing. Each country has its way of addressing ageing, but all agree that this goes beyond healthcare. It’s a major transformation of our social systems. I shared what Singapore is doing with #HealthierSG.
As the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, I hope the world can renew our commitment to work together to bring about better health to the world.

OYK went back to RI.

Went back to Raffles Institution (I spent two years there) to join over 500 Year 6 students for a dialogue.
We covered many topics including climate change, social inequality, making Singapore for conducive for raising families and education reforms.
Every generation will have its challenges. It has to find ways to address these problems and make the best of the historical circumstances it is living in. Comparatively, this generation has grown up in a peaceful and stable world, with many opportunties, but also with intense competition.
With two days to go before its 200th Founder’s Day, I wish RI and all its students an early Happy Birthday.
Auspicium Melioris Aevi.

Sembawang is known to be more green and rustic, we also want to make it active and healthy.
We are working hard to increase the number of exercises groups in Sembawang, held same time and same venue every week, so it is easier for our residents to join in.
You can refer to the noticeboard at your lift lobby for more details.

Did you know that Robinson Road used to be known as “newspaper street”?
I found out on Sunday at a morning cycle with the Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 team and 100 readers as part of Zaobao’s centennial celebrations.
We stopped by 63 and 120 Robinson Road, which were the offices of Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew Jit Poh respectively. These were two of Singapore’s oldest Chinese newspapers back then, and they merged in 1983 to form the present-day Zaobao.
As our main and oldest Chinese newspaper, Zaobao has an important place in society. The history of Zaobao is also Singapore’s history.
Happy 100th birthday Zaobao!

OYK gave an update.

Gave an update on #HealthierSG at the opening of Fullerton Health Group’s Health Screening Centre @ Novena earlier today.
We have made good progress so far. More than 870 out of 1,200 CHAS GP clinics have joined Healthier SG, and over 24,000 individuals aged 40 and above with chronic illness have pre-enrolled.
With the good momentum, we will formally launch Healthier SG on 5 July 2023.
Private healthcare providers like Fullerton Health can play a very useful role. They are delivering corporate healthcare plans, and can work with employers to reach out to workers to enrol in Healthier SG, and help those with chronic diseases to manage their health better.

Attended the launch of “Rainbow After Dusk”, a book on Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng, written by Woon Tai Ho.
Mr Lim is a giant in the Singapore art scene. I first met him in 2019 when I was the Minister for Education, at the 80th Anniversary celebrations of Chung Cheng High School.
The school has a permanent Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery on-campus, and I was especially taken by his 满江红 painting. It’s a huge painting - 5m to 6m long. I could not figure out the words, but it was a moving piece of art.
At 102 years old, Mr Lim still actively paints and is constantly looking for his next breakthrough. Just like the title of the book, he is showing us how old age can be lived in bright, warm and radiant colours.
He is an artist, a husband, a father, and a mentor to many people, including me. I wish him good health as he continues to inspire us with his spirit of art and life.

Today, Dr Lim Wee Kiak and I joined families at
Families for Life (FFL)’s National Family Week celebration.
NFW is an annual event to celebrate family ties and encourage families to engage in fun-filled activities.
It is heartwarming to see families bonding over the wide variety of fun-filled activities and exciting sports try-outs offered by ActiveSG. It was a great joy seeing the little ones on the new Becky Bunny bouncy castle too.
You can also check out the calendar of events for the June school holidays!
Let’s say “YES” to family time!
Visit go.gov.sg/nationalfamilyweek-2023 for details.
