OYK officially opened the SingHealth Tower and Outram Community Hospital (#OCH) yesterday.

Officially opened the SingHealth Tower and Outram Community Hospital (#OCH) yesterday.
They are Phase 1 of the 20-year Singapore General Hospital Campus Masterplan, announced in 2016.
This will improve facilities and enhance capacity of our growing healthcare needs, and transform the #SGH campus.
The 19-storey SingHealth Tower is the spine of the Campus, silently but steadfastly supporting the daily operations.
For instance, kitchen staff at the central kitchen prepare 5,700 patients’ meals in a single day. The central logistics hub is where medicines and medical devices are sorted and dispatched to the wards.
Then there is OCH, our 9th community hospital in #Singapore, and the 1st within SGH Campus.
With 545 beds, OCH is designed to provide a smooth transition from an acute care setting to a step-down care setting, and finally integrating them to the community.
Congrats to SingHealth Tower and OCH in joining the SingHealth family!

While #Singapore is small, different areas have their own unique character. For #Sembawang, it is not just the place but more so the people who gave it its character. I met a few special individuals who helped make Sembawang special, in their own ways.
Watch their stories here.
P/s: many thanks to the volunteers who worked hard to put this special video together!

17,699 children aged below 12 infected with Covid-19 since pandemic started, 2,586 hospitalised

SINGAPORE - A total of 17,699 children below the age of 12 have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, with 2,586 hospitalised.

More than 140,000 under the age of 12 have also gotten their first dose of the vaccine, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung in a Facebook post on Sunday (Jan 23).

"On average, about 6,000 children are vaccinated daily," he added.

Mr Ong's comments on Sunday came after Singapore's director of medical services Kenneth Mak said on Friday (Jan 21) that children aged below 12 are starting to make up the majority of Covid-19 cases that are admitted to hospitals.

Among 14,380 children below 12 years old infected with the disease from Oct 1, 2021 to Jan 16, 2022, four had severe infection needing either oxygen supplementation or intensive care unit (ICU) attention.

The KK Women's and Children's Hospital and the National University Hospital also reported that they are seeing more children with Covid-19 and non-Covid-19-related respiratory symptoms who require admission.

In his Facebook post, Mr Ong said: "Many countries are reporting spikes in children admission to hospitals due to Covid-19. Vaccination can prevent severe illnesses in children."

He added: "I have met parents who are worried about their children getting the jabs. They also understand the risks of infection, and are re-weighing the pros and cons."

In his Facebook post, Mr Ong included a table summarising the risks and benefits of vaccination for children.

The table shows that no serious complications from vaccination have been reported and confirmed locally so far, while there is a one in 1,000 incidence of multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children, a condition where the child's immune system overreacts after a Covid-19 infection, typically two to eight weeks later.

OYK launches a book.

Ong Ye Kung

28 mins ·
We launched Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报’s book on COVID-19 titled 《战疫勇士:新加坡之道》(“Covid Warriors: The Singapore Way”) today. The book chronicles our ups and downs, milestones, and shared experiences in our COVID-19 journey so far.
We have had to adapt to new norms, make adjustments and sacrifices. But the pandemic has also brought out the best in us — the resilience and unity of #Singaporeans.
We are deeply thankful to everyone who contributed to our national response — our healthcare workers, border workers, teachers, drivers, security officers, cleaners, social workers, volunteers and many more.
As we forge ahead together, may this book serve as a meaningful record of the challenges we have overcome and lessons we have learnt.

OYK attends CNY celebrations for seniors in Sembawang.

Ong Ye Kung

7 hrs ·
After a year’s hiatus, we managed to hold a #ChineseNewYear celebration for our seniors at #Sembawang CC — with ang paos, goodies and also a getai performance.
Very glad to see the seniors enjoying themselves, and also the performers whom I have not met for over a year. Also very grateful to our donors who made this event possible!

OYK reminds you not to eat too much LNY goodies.

This is my family’s favorite Chinese New Year snack. Home-baked pineapple tarts that are not easy to come by, but a friend has been helping us order every year. This being my first CNY as Health Minister, I am afraid I need to be a bit of a nag. Do enjoy all these goodies in moderation, as they can contain quite a lot of sugar, salt and fat. As much as we like them, my wife and I take at most one pineapple tart a day. So we can possibly finish the tub by Chap Goh Mei!

Enjoy your reunion dinner!
