Manchester United reached the Champions League's last 16 with a game to spare after thrashing Bayer Leverkusen.

Wayne Rooney, who had a hand in four goals, chipped to the back post for Antonio Valencia's tap-in for the first before Emir Spahic scored an own goal from the United striker's free-kick.

Stefan Reinartz's header hit the post after deflecting off Ryan Giggs before Jonny Evans turned in from a corner.
Chris Smalling then touched in and Nani rounded the keeper for a fifth.

Three of Antonio Valencia's last four Champions League goals for Manchester United have come against German opposition

The result is United's biggest away win in the Champions League and confirmed a miserable night for the German side, who are second in the Bundesliga and lost an unbeaten home record.

Sami Hyypia's team could not cope with the irrepressible Rooney and the evergreen Giggs, who two days short of his 40th birthday showed his class and composure alongside Phil Jones in the centre of midfield.

United's two first-half goals obliterated any momentum the hosts had, and although United were without the injured trio of Robin van Persie, Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic, plus the suspended Marouane Fellaini, the visitors were rarely troubled.

The victory meant United boss David Moyes has reached the latter stages of the Champions League at his first attempt with the club and it will give further credence to claims from first-team coach Phil Neville that the players are beginning to believe in his methods.

Last year's Premier League champions extended their unbeaten run to 11 games, and ahead of a tricky run of domestic fixtures against Tottenham, Everton and Newcastle, they can at least relax about their final Champions League match at home to Shakhtar Donetsk. A point in that game will mean they top Group A.

Leverkusen are only four points behind leaders Bayern Munich in Germany and looked like they were beginning to pose a threat to the heart of United's defence early on.

But the game's course changed after 22 minutes when Evans did superbly to block Stefan Kiessling's shot before United immediately swept down the opposite end to open the scoring after a swift counter attack.

The ball was fed to Giggs and the Welshman found Rooney, who chipped to the back post where Valencia pounced.
It was a hammer blow to the 2002 Champions League runners-up and the home supporters were stunned further when United extended their lead eight minutes later.

Shinji Kagawa, who also impressed and had a hand in the first goal, was brought down by Reinartz on the left wing, and Rooney's perfectly dipping free-kick was headed in by Spahic, under pressure from Smalling.

Leverkusen had an isolated chance around the hour mark when Reinartz's header from a corner hit Giggs and clipped the post.

But after Nani dragged his shot wide and Rooney was also inches off-target after nutmegging Simon Rolfes, Evans touched in after Rooney had drawn a save from Giggs's corner.

With that, the contest was over but after more poor Leverkusen defending, Rooney lobbed to Smalling for a close-range finish and Nani then raced onto Giggs's pass to round Bernd Leno and seal a historic victory.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas relaxed over job speculation
Andre Villas-Boas has made light of the suggestion he should be replaced at Tottenham by ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Pressure has increased on Villas-Boas since Sunday's 6-0 loss at Manchester City and ex-chairman Alan Sugar said he would like to see Ferguson take charge.

"I think it is pretty fair [to say Ferguson could do better]," the 36-year-old manager said with a smile.

"With the record he has, he would be a pretty good manager at any club."

Spurs are currently ninth in the league with 20 points from 12 games - a point behind United.

They sold last season's top scorer Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £85m but had been expected to be among the challengers for the title having brought highly-rated players - forwards Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado, Brazil international Paulinho and midfielder Christian Eriksen - to the club.

But the north London outfit have already lost four times and only scored nine goals so far in the league this season - the fewest of any of the top 12 clubs. In contrast, United have scored 20 and are unbeaten in all competitions since 28 September.

The champions, managed by David Moyes, who succeeded Ferguson in the summer, face Tottenham on Sunday and come to White Hart Lane off the back of a 5-0 win over Bundesliga high-flyers Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday. Spurs, on the other hand, battled to a 2-0 victory over Norwegian minnows Tromso in the Europa League on Thursday.

"I watched the game last night [Wednesday] - it was a good performance but it will have no bearing on Sunday," added Villas-Boas.

"They are on a good run that changed their fortunes. We don't expect an easy match, but it will be a completely different story [for United] on Sunday.

"I'm not being disrespectful, but it will be a different game in different conditions and our players will be mentally ready."

The Portuguese manager said his side's win in Norway, courtesy of a second-half own goal and Mousa Dembele's strike, provided a much-needed boost for the players.

"I am very happy for the players to have bounced back from the defeat against Man City," he added.

"Obviously the opponent we have on Sunday is the biggest we can have. But to prepare for that game, it was important to get back to winning ways tonight and we did it in a fashion where we looked solid and created lots of chances. I am extremely happy with the performance and result."

Germany midfielder Lewis Holtby, who came on as a substitute against Tromso, said: "We needed some confidence from somewhere. If it was a long week [between games] then it would have been in everyone's heads.

"It wasn't the best game, but after the nightmare on Sunday it was good to get a result and a little confidence."

with an over-rated manager fearful of change....................and a team of old players............

If we don't redeem ourselves home to Geordies tomorrow, it's curtains and walking ticket for DM :(:p Roon suspended, shows his frustration. And RVP on MC?

Barclays Premier League
Venue: Old TraffordDate: Saturday, 7 December

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is suspended after being booked for the fifth time this season in Wednesday's defeat by Everton.

Robin van Persie could return after groin and toe injuries, while Phil Jones is available again after a ban.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew may make changes after their 3-0 midweek defeat at Swansea.

Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse missed that match but could return from illness and injury respectively.

MATCH PREVIEW
Until Wednesday, Everton hadn't won away to Manchester United since 1992 - so even without the David Moyes against his old club scenario, it was a pretty big deal.

Let's face it - every United home defeat is, and we COULD be dealing with something even bigger this time.

Newcastle haven't beaten United at Old Trafford since 1972, when goals from John Tudor and Stewart Barrowclough gave the Magpies their one and only success since 1950. That's one win in 48 games spanning 63 years.

Over those years they've generally had a good go in vain, with last season's Premier League visit a prime example. Three times Newcastle led, only to be beaten 4-3. They'll just have to take the lead once this time to make the home regulars restless.

They've seen their side drop 10 points at home already this season - one more than went begging in the whole of last term - and whilst nobody could credibly suggest that United are experiencing a clichéd 'crisis', they can ill-afford to drop many more if they're to challenge for a top four place, let alone the title.

The last time they had as few points after 14 games was in 2001-02 when they went on to finish third.

Currently as close to the bottom three as they are to Arsenal at the top, Moyes might even take third if offered it now, having admitted that his side "will have to play some great football and win an awful lot of games in the run-in".

After four successive wins, Newcastle suffered their own setback at Swansea on Wednesday, but that won't stop Alan Pardew from thinking - like many other managers - that this is the season to go to Old Trafford undaunted.

Teams have a prayer there now, with Manchester United fans perhaps offering a few up to the 'man upstairs'. That's Sir Alex Ferguson, for the avoidance of doubt.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
•Newcastle have only won one of their last 23 matches against Manchester United in all competitions - a 3-0 Premier League home victory in January 2012.
•In total, they have only won four of their 38 Premier League matches against the Red Devils - all at St James' Park.
•Manchester United have won 78 Premier League points against Newcastle - more than any other club has against the Geordies.
•In last season's encounter on Boxing Day at Old Trafford, the home side came from behind three times to win 4-3 thanks to a last-minute goal from Javier Hernandez.

Manchester United
•The Red Devils have now failed to score in two Premier League home games in the same season for the first time since 2006-07.
•They have only won five of their last 11 league games at Old Trafford.
•United have conceded more goals than any other club in the top half of the table - bar Newcastle.
•If Robin van Persie does not recover from injury this will be the first time United have played a league game without either him or Wayne Rooney in their side since the Dutchman arrived.
•United have scored only eight goals in seven Premier League home games this season, fewer than bottom of the league Sunderland.
•They have not lost successive Premier League home games since May 2002.

Newcastle United
•Newcastle have alternated between wins and defeats in their last eight away games in the league.
•Their defeat at Swansea brought to an end their run of four straight wins and it was only their second defeat in their last eight matches.
•They have conceded 14 goals away from home in the league this season - a total only surpassed by three other teams.

Top 4 may be out of reach. I'd expect some players to throw in their transfer forms if Moyes fails to recruit 'top' players in the January transfer period- Roon and RVP.

The case for a technical director gets louder each day. Gollum is definitely having a hard time.

No top 4 = no CL = Man Utd is fucked because of heavy debt = players get sold to rein in the wage bill :D

Some distraction from current woes :p Bit of celluloid nostalgia of MU Class of 92 premiere in London

and so the cycle of doom has begun..............sell players since out of CL..........buy cheaper players lagi cannot get into CL............LOL..............

this season ah............Europah League also can't go in................

saw the line-up and formation for Man U.................at the most draw.............if not lose........

Cleverley and Jones in central midfield...........can't create chances and mostly kana overrun............

Van Persie and Hernandez both depends on chances being presented to them...........they'll hardly get any.............

Man Utd lost to Newcastle. Was there a fire drill at Old Trafford? :D

They're chasing the wrong end of the table. If they continue to play the way they do, relegation is a strong possibility. Two strikers playing up front with no service from midfield. Why on earth was Rafael playing when he was clearly not fit.

I hope they get relegated. That would teach the Glazers, the board of directors and the CEO a painful lesson.

They won't be relegated but won't make champions league this season.
This is my take on the situation (posted in Official TCSS thread):

The title is out of reach, champions league still possible but touch and go.
Man Utd has 2 major problems, firstly the quality is not good enough, and secondly and probably more importantly, they seem to have lost an edge in everything they do, tactically, coaching wise, players' desire, determination and concentration, team spirit and team work, manager's influence and fear factor, etc.......................

Neither is easy to fix, it isn't as if there are world class players out there waiting to be bought. Anyone who thinks Iniesta or Ronaldo is coming to Utd from Spain is in dreamland. The second problem is even more difficult, as it is partly in the minds of everyone at the club.
Rebuilding may have to start this season, but I'm sure they will let Moyes stay until end of next season at least.

BPL is about small margins, just a little lapse in any aspect and any team can beat any team.

Ferdinand questions Moyes' methods

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has raised questions over David Moyes’ managerial methods, telling BT Sport that his tendency to name his team late “turns you into a mad man.”.............

http://http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1642750/man-united-defender-rio-ferdinand-raises-questions-david-moyes-methods?cc=4716

**************************************************************************************************************

Credit to Ferdinand for saying like it is. If his 'methods' are better than Man U's way, his ex-club should have at least won one silverware every season while he was manager at the club. Sigh...........the stupid things managers do in their first season at a new club.

The lack of quality is obvious but they more than make up for this with the collective effort of all the players and the system they play. Under Moyes, we have no system and the players looked clueless when they're on the pitch.

Read recently that he was planning another raid for players from his ex-club. It only goes on to show that the manager is not willing to adapt and change his ways. We're FARKED!!!!!!!
