Based on what I have read in the media, it appears that LML did not acknowledge their mistake, that the maid is honest and did not steal from them, and that they should not have reported to the police, and after making that report, should have promptly notifies the SPF that they made a mistake, and not proceed to trial, and not to proceed with the appeal.
I submit that he and his family members who are involved, should be sent to jail, because a warning or reprimand or monetary fine, is meaningless and not a deterrent.

Who is the rightful employer? Is it LML?

You cannot say that you did not know. If you are the employer and you signed the contract with the terms it is binding. If someone else ordered the maid to do it without your permission you are still liable.

Unfortunately this is how the contracts work. Of course you can go to court to argue.

But so far it does not look like there are any other parties involved besides LML and his family.

Sure get his son to take the fall and say he was the one who ordered all that and he will take the blame for it.
