Morale collapses among Russia's troops: Putin's soldiers shot comrades who refused to open fire on civilians and so many are deserting they have been threatened with seven years in jail, POWs claim

  • A captured Russian soldier said he was shot at for helping civilians in Kharkiv
  • Another POW in a video claims Russian deserters are threatened with jail time
  • The men made their claims in videos released by the Ukrainian Security Service
A captured Russian solider claims he and a lieutenant were shot at while helping civilians caught in a crossfire between Putin's and Ukrainian forces, while another said those fleeing the battle are being threatened with seven years imprisonment.

In a filmed questioning posted by the Ukrainian Security Service, the man described an incident on February 24 in Kharkiv, where he and a lieutenant tried to protect a woman in her twenties, and her mother, as the two sides opened fire on one another.

In the clip, the captured soldier claimed he was shot in the foot, and the lieutenant was killed, when others realised the pair weren't shooting at civilians.

'Then your (Ukrainian) forces began to shoot at ours. And then, while ours were being shot at, me and my lieutenant were helping civilians.'

He said the two men 'decision to save civilians, Ukrainian civilians'.

Speaking about the two women they helped, the soldier said: 'The lieutenant ran over to them, began to take them out of the car, shouting "come over over here".

'In about 20 minutes, they noticed me and the lieutenant were saving civilians and an order was given to shoot me and the lieutenant and the civilians.

'The lieutenant was killed, then they began shooting at the mother. She died with him too.

'Me and the daughter began to retreat. My forces began to shoot me in the legs.

'If it wasn't for this garage, they would have killed me the same as they had with the mother and lieutenant.

'Me and the daughter sat behind this garage. We hid until it quietened down and the daughter suggested to drive away, call for forces.

'She went to find her mother, who was next to the lieutenant. Got the keys (to the car).

'I crawled to the car and she put me in the backseat. She started the car and drove.'

It's understood the man lost consciousness and when he came to, woke up thirsty, explaining the civilian was able to get him some water before they got medical attention.

In a second video released by the Ukrainian Security Service on Facebook, a Russian military technician was questioned, and claimed deserters are being threatened with seven years of jail time.

The man, who transported equipment in need of repair from Ukraine, said: 'Many have already left home. Many are fleeing, they don't want to go to war. What is it for? No one needs this, this war. No one wants this.

'They are against it, they're escaping. The thing is they're promising seven years in prison, so people are staying. No one wants to go to jail.

'Around month ago they gathered us, gave us documents, and told us to say we're willing to participate in a special operation.

'Even if you didn't want to sign up for it, you did, and everyone was 100% told to go, they were sent.

'And so around a month ago, they sent us away and loaded equipment.'

A video yesterday also showed a captured Russian commander begging for 'mercy' for Putin's forces attacking Ukraine, saying they were duped into invading in the false belief that the government had been overthrown by Nazis and needing liberating.

The man, who claimed he is a lieutenant-colonel in the Russian national guard's special rapid response unit, said his countrymen have been 'brainwashed' into supporting the war but - having seen the situation in Ukraine for himself - he now feels 'shame' in taking part in 'genocide' and says Ukrainians are 'right' to resist.

Astakhov Dmitry Mikhailovich said his doubts solidified when he saw two of his favourite boxers - Oleksandr Usyk and Vasiliy Lomachenko - agreeing to fight for the resistance.

And in a stark message delivered to Russian troops still fighting, he said: 'I'm begging you, stop before it is too late...Russia cannot win here.

'If someone came to my territory, I would do the same as these people did and I would be right. They are right now.

'Guys, be brave. It's easier for me, I'm in this situation already. You are in a tense situation, going against your own commander.

'But this is genocide, the people are just killed.'

It echoes statements given by other Russian prisoners interviewed by Ukrainian forces, who said the order to attack came at short notice, that they were told the Ukrainian government had been deposed, and that they were going in a 'liberators' who should expect only light resistance. Instead, they walked into a bloodbath.

Just FYI on mercenaries and armed civilian volunteers ... They are not subjected to the Geneva Convention. Meaning these people will not have rights as POWs, can be executed on the field and denied medical treatment.

I have no sympathy for mercs because they made that professional choice. But I feel sorry for the civilian fighters

Isn't it worse for the civilians?

Everyday russia delays, those deadly anti tank and and aircraft missiles are quickly being deployed by Ukraine thanks to donations by friendly states.

Hard to tell. If it is sinkies, you can easily identify by their singlish tone only uniquely in Singapore. Unless, Russian speak Rubbish (Russian English)
Ukraine has at least 30 fake news already i dont trust them in the sligjtest

Yes definitely.

And the Comedian president forbids 18 to 60 year old Ukrainian males from leaving the country.

This war must end now
For me Zelensky is a war criminal. He is urging civilians to throw themselves against Russian fires, all for his personal glory and to gain some international sympathy. I don’t even think Saddam or Gaddafi did that.

Its war. US did the same thing in iraq. A huge bomb could be inside the car. Nobody should be driving like its normsl.

If you're driving a civilian car to a warzone, you deserve all potential negative consequences. No sympathy.

By the way, take note of the car plate number.

Poland ready to give fighter jets to U.S. to supply Ukraine

Photo: Karol Serewis/Getty Images Poland/Getty Images

The Polish government announced Tuesday it was prepared to deploy its entire fleet of used MiG-29 fighter jets to a U.S. airbase in Germany, giving the U.S. the option to then transfer the Soviet-era aircraft to Ukraine's military.

Why it matters: Ukraine has pleaded with the Western allies to either impose a "no-fly" zone or hand over warplanes that Ukrainian pilots could use to counter Russia's aerial assault. But the U.S. and Poland had downplayed the chances of such a deal as recently as Monday, warning of major logistics issues and the risk of provoking Russia.

Details: Under one option being considered by the Biden administration, the U.S. would backfill Poland's MiG-29 fleet with American-made F-16 fighter jets.

  • Poland hinted at that proposal in its statement Tuesday, asking the U.S. "to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities" in exchange for the MiGs.
  • Poland also called on other eastern-flank NATO allies in possession of MiGs — Bulgaria and Slovakia — to take similar steps.
  • Victoria Nuland, the No. 3 official at the State Department, told a Senate committee Tuesday that Poland's announcement came as a "surprise" to her: "To my knowledge, it wasn't pre-consulted with us that they planned to give these planes to us."
Between the lines: With Tuesday’s announcement, Poland seems to be shifting responsibility for making this deal happen — and for weathering the repercussions from Russia — onto the U.S.
  • considered a participant in the conflict.
  • White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the U.S. would not oppose Poland's "sovereign decision" to send fighter jets to Ukraine, stressing: "They make their own decisions, but it is not as easy as just moving planes around."

UK says it will support Poland if it decides to send fighter jets to Ukraine

Reuters, London

British defense minister Ben Wallace said on Tuesday Britain would support Poland if it decided to provide Ukraine with fighter jets, but warned that doing so might have direct consequences for Poland.

“I would support the Poles and whatever choice they make,” Wallace told Sky News, adding that the United Kingdom could not offer aircraft that the Ukrainians would be able to use.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

“We would protect Poland, we’ll help them with anything that they need,” he said. “Poland will understand that the choices they make will not only directly help Ukraine, which is a good thing, but also may bring them into direct line of fire from countries such as Russia or Belarus.”

Britain has provided Ukraine with defensive weapons as well as other military and humanitarian aid.

Wallace said he would make a statement to parliament on Wednesday setting out what further lethal and non-lethal aid Britain would be providing, as well as what measures the British government would urge other countries to do.

5 reasons why Ukraine has been able to stall Russian advance

5 reasons why Ukraine has been able to stall Russian advance

A father cries as he says goodbye to his family in front of an evacuation train at the central train station in Odessa on March 7, 2022. Odessa, which Ukraine fears could be the next target of Russia's offensive in the south, is the country's main port and is vital for its economy.

PARIS — Almost two weeks into the Russian invasion of their country, Ukrainian forces have managed to hold up the advance of their foes with resistance that has won plaudits from Western allies.
Analysts say their performance against a numerically far superior army has been fuelled by a combination of good preparation, national solidarity and Russian mistakes.
However the future remains unclear, with president Vladimir Putin repeatedly declaring that nothing will stand between him and his aims.
"They (the Russians) are basically not going very fast," said a senior French military source, asking not to be named. "At some point they will have to realign but it will not signify a failure."
AFP looks at five ways Ukraine has been able to stall the Russian advance.

PREPARATION

Ukraine, with Western help, substantially bolstered its armed forces after 2014, when Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in a lightning operation and pro-Russia separatists overran parts of the east of the country.
In 2016, Nato and Kyiv began a training program for Ukrainian special forces, who now number 2,000 and have been able to help civilian volunteers.
"Ukrainians have spent the last eight years planning, training, and equipping themselves for resisting a Russian occupation," said Dr Douglas London, adjunct associate professor at Georgetown University.
Understanding that the US and Nato won't come to its rescue on the battlefield, Ukraine's strategy has focused "on bleeding Moscow so as to make occupation untenable," the CIA veteran wrote in Foreign Affairs.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Russia, relying on Soviet-era familiarity with an area that Moscow controlled under the USSR, appears to have underestimated the Ukrainian forces' home-turf advantage.
This included both knowledge of the terrain — at a time of the year when tracks can turn to m&d — and the capacity of locals to themselves take up arms against the invading forces.

In such a scenario of irregular warfare, weaker forces can maximise the advantages they have over their stronger opponents — "advantages of terrain, local knowledge, and social connections," said Dr Spencer Meredith, professor at the College of International Security Affairs.
Challenges will mount further if urban fighting develops when Russia seeks to penetrate inside cities like Kyiv.
"That changes everything," said the French military source. "The Russians will run into trouble at every street corner, building by building."

SOLIDARITY

Led by president Volodymyr Zelensky, who has remained in Kyiv despite the risk to his life as Russia enters the region of the capital, Ukrainians have shown the deepest resilience in adversity.
Ordinary citizens have volunteered for the frontline, often after ensuring their families were safely headed to security in the west of the country or outside its borders.
Images circulating online have shown ordinary people making Molotov cocktails or farmers towing away captured Russian military hardware.

Ukraine had no "other choice than to further increase its attrition warfare capacity by rapid training of territorial troops and use of light weaponry," said retired French colonel Michel Goya.

STRATEGIC ERRORS

Military analysts say Russia made strategic errors in the early days of the invasion after it was launched on Feb 24, sending in too few ground troops in the initial phase and failing to get ground and air forces working in tandem.
It appears Moscow expected to achieve military success within days.
"At the outset they thought they could introduce units very quickly into the capital Kyiv... But very early on they got bloody noses," said Mr Michael Kofman, director of the Russia Studies Program at the Center for Naval Analyses in the US.
"The assumptions were ridiculous... how could you take Kyiv in three days? The Russian military has now adjusted and is trying to conduct this as a combined arms operation," he said.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FEAR

Russia has set alarm bells ringing across the world by keeping tens of thousands of troops deployed close to the border with Ukraine over recent weeks.

But it is possible that few had any idea they were about to be sent to war in a neighbouring country whose inhabitants are fellow Slavs and where many speak Russian as their mother tongue.
Morale will not have been helped by heavy Russian casualties who, according to the French source, have included at least one major general — a sign the top military elite have felt compelled to visit the frontline.
Dr Tom Pepinsky, non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said evidence so far suggested that Ukraine's treatment of Russian prisoners of war could become harsher as the invaders press further into the country.
"The Ukrainian resistance will be most effective if Russians are on edge, sleepless, and prone to overreactions," he said. AFP
