Looking at recent news looks like crimes are by repeated offenders.

I also do not understand why release them or at least charge them accordingly so they will not be release under the emergency ordinance. But compared to KL, JB now seems to be better.

Come on if there is any wrong it is because the wrong law is used to charge the criminals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_(Public_Order_and_Crime_Prevention)_Ordinance
The EO was originally used to combat the Communist insurgency i.e. element subversive to the govt. Using the EO to charge/lock up people due to lack of evidence means two things, the law enforcement is not good enough and there is no proper alternative law to cater to the type of criminals that are being apprehended thru EO. Blame the lawmakers for not coming up with a proper law to facilitate law enforcers to charge appropriately, dont go thru the easy route by blaming removal of EO.

Two bullets hit his right leg, but Singapore permanent resident Raman Othayanan, 56, only realised it when he got out of the car: His leg hurt and there were holes in his pants where the bullets had struck.

He had just collected a parcel from a courier company in Taman Molek in Johor Baru on Tuesday when a gunman went up to his car and shot through the front passenger seat window. Mr Raman was in the driver’s seat and his wife was beside him.

Speaking from a hospital in Johor Baru yesterday, Mr Raman said his employees in JB said they saw a motorcyclist circle the office that very morning.

Johor Bahru - An average of one Singaporean is a crime victim in the state of Johor daily, according to Malaysian police. However, police maintained that Johor is not a crime haven.

Last year, 400 crime cases involving Singaporeans were recorded. For the first six months of this year, a total of 216 crime cases were related to Singaporeans.

Commenting on Singapore citizens as crime victims, Johor state police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said: "Most cases were property crimes such as motorcycle theft and robbery."

He added that some 26 cases of violent crimes were reported from January to June this year. Of the lot, 17 cases were related to gang robbery.

So far this month, there have been reports of Singaporeans being involved in two carjacking and a case of robbery at gunpoint.

However, there were also 53 Singaporean criminals who were nabbed in Johor last year.

In relation to the issue, Mr Mohd Mokhtar urged citizens from the island republic not to label Johor as a crime haven and assured them that the police are working hard to fight crime.

"They should not be afraid to come here for their holidays or to conduct business," he added.

Mr Mohd Mokhtar also mentioned that police have detained 135 Singaporeans for drug-related offences in the past three years.

For the first six months of 2012, 20 Singaporeans were arrested. Of the crimes committed, 12 cases involved drug abuse, while six other dealt with possession and two people were nailed for drug trafficking.

He added that 53 Singaporeans were detained for drug offences last year, while 62 were detained for similar offences in 2010.

By Romesh Navaratnarajah: A growing number of Singaporeans are buying homes in Johor despite news of them being victims of crimes in the area.

According to the Johor-Singapore Community Care Association (JSCA), about 5,000 Singaporeans own homes in Johor.

"I see more Singaporeans buying houses in Johor Baru compared to five years ago," said Anuar Mohd Saad, Sales Manager at Broswell Property Consultant.

"Previously, many Singaporeans were not keen to buy homes in Johor Baru because of the perceived crime situation and property resale value," he added.

Meanwhile, Singaporean families are choosing to live in estates like Horizon Hills, Ledang Heights and East Ledang, all located within Nusajaya. Prices range from RM500,000 (S$198,900) for a terrace house to RM1 million (S$397,800) for a semi-detached home.

"These prices are attractive because those earning middle-class incomes can afford landed properties," said Anuar.

According to Charmian Chelvam, Sales Manager at DTZ, the fact that estates in Nusajaya are just 20 minutes from the Tuas checkpoint is what attracts Singaporeans to buying a house there.

"The quality of the houses are good and the security systems are sufficiently effective, and because of this, more Singaporeans are looking to buy property in the area," she said.

Interestingly, Singaporeans living in Johor formed the JSCA. Headed by Wan Hussin Zoohri, a former People's Action Party Member of Parliament, the association plans to organise social events for its members and support them in case of emergencies.

"Many of the Singaporeans living in Johor are happy where they are. They also know that crime, while unexpected, is also not rampant," said Wan Hussin.

"One of our objectives, however, is to act as a voice, to speak to the authorities there whenever there are security concerns."

Quick action helps cops nab car thief who drove off with woman
By YEE XIANG YUN

JOHOR BARU: Alert bystanders led to the arrest of a man who had jumped into a Mini convertible and driven off, taking its female driver with him.

A police team rushed into action and managed to rescue the woman about an hour after the incident.

The 35-year-old man was arrested and a revolver was seized from him.

State deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ismail Yatim said the drama began when the 26-year-old businesswoman was getting into her car in Taman Sentosa.

The woman was believed to have just returned from a late supper.

“The man who was armed with a .38 pistol hopped into the convertible and forced her into the passenger seat.

“He then sped off with the woman still in her seat. Fortunately, we were informed by the public and immediately launched a manhunt.

“The car was found in Jalan Tampoi Lama, about 16km away. We arrested the suspect and seized a .38 Revolver along with three live bullets,” he said, adding that the victim was unhurt.

In another case, a 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly possessing 57 rounds of ammunition and dismantled parts of four fake pistols during a raid at a house in Taman Larkin Idaman last Friday.

The suspect, who was nabbed at the house in the 4.30pm incident, was remanded for four days to facilitate investigations.

Meanwhile, a retired teacher was robbed of RM40 by a man who rushed into her house just after she had completed her morning walk.

The 71-year-old woman said she was about to close the front gate of her house in Permas Jaya when a man stopped his car in her driveway, exited the vehicle and rushed into her house.

“He then held a parang to my neck and demanded money. I gave him RM40 but he asked for more. I was about to get my purse from a nearby table, but when I turned around, he was gone,” she said.

Man jailed for plotting goldsmith robbery Share on facebookShare on twitterShare on emailShare on printSourceStraits TimesDate07 Nov 2012AuthorElena ChongTHE mastermind of a plan to rob a goldsmith, who aborted the scheme when the place was too crowded, was yesterday sentenced to 21 months' jail.

In August, Kee Hong Yong, 26, recruited a teenager, Hei Lip Gan, to commit goldsmith robberies around Chinatown, and to buy items such as hammers, caps and balaclavas for the crimes.

Hei's job was to put on a balaclava and gloves and to smash display glasses in the goldsmith shop at Fook Hai Building on Aug 6 before scooping up the jewellery.

They would then escape in a getaway car that was to be parked nearby. Kee had asked a friend to help him rent a car on Aug 2.

Kee, who pleaded guilty in September, was sentenced to jail for conspiracy to commit goldsmith robberies, and for stealing $8,500 in cash and property from his father at his Bedok North Street 2 home on April 28.

He was also fined $800 and banned from driving for 12 months for driving without a valid licence. Kee was to have been sentenced in August for the $8,500 theft when he jumped bail. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

A district court heard that he hatched the plan to rob goldsmiths as he was heavily in debt.

Between Aug 1 and 6, he recruited Hei, then 16. On Aug 6, Kee and Hei travelled in the rented vehicle and parked it near Fook Hai Building in South Bridge Road. They went to a staircase area in the building to put on their balaclavas.

They loitered in the building near Kim Bian Hong Goldsmith, waiting for an opportunity to strike, but abandoned the plan and returned to their car as the area was crowded. While they were travelling along Kallang Road, a Land Transport Authority officer wanted to stop Kee for a routine check but Kee drove away and abandoned the car in North Bridge Road. The pair fled and were arrested the next day.

Hei, now 17, was sentenced last month to two years' probation for his role in the crime.

Last month, Deputy Public Prosecutor Prem Raj Prabakaran urged the court to impose at least two years' jail on the robbery conspiracy charge.

He said that if not for the area being crowded that day, the robbery would have been committed.

Kee has previous convictions for dishonest misappropriation, desertion and abetting in unlicensed moneylending.

Another Singaporean became the victim of a robbery in Johor Baru on Thursday night.

The latest incident took place at 10.45pm in Permas Jaya in JB.

The victim, part-time tutor David Lim, 24, told Shin Min Daily News that he had posted an advertisement online to sell his girlfriend's laptop.

An interested buyer had responded to his post and asked to meet him in Johor Bahru.

Three men met Mr Lim and his girlfriend in Johor Bahru, and they examined the laptop.

Mr Lim said: "After talking with the three men for a while, they claimed that they didn't have enough money and wanted us to accompany them to the ATM to withdraw cash."

After Mr Lim agreed and returned to his car, he realised that two of the men had followed them and sat in the back seat. Another man drove the other car.

Along the journey, one of the men suddenly pulled out a knife and placed it against Mr Lim's neck and ordered him to drive to Permas Jaya.

Mr Lim added: "When we were about to arrive there, I had a feeling that they wouldn't let us go so easily.

"So when I was driving past some private houses, I deliberately crashed into the gatepost of one of the houses.

"Then I jumped into the back seat and tussled with them."

Several residents in the area initially tried to help Mr Lim, but after the men told them they were the ones being robbed, the residents freed them.

The three men fled the scene.

Mr Lim sustained a 4cm-long knife wound and injuries to his hands and legs.

His girlfriend needed three stitches on her face and mouth.

The STOMPer says:

"I was only left with 2!

"After further inspection, I realised that this person had tried to take out a few nuts as some of them were loose while others were still tight.

"I thought such things don't happen here!

"My car was left at a open carpark and I had just gotten the rims done.

"So someone dared to steal in the open?"

One Car Stolen Every Four Days in Singapore
Mavis Toh - Straits Times Indonesia | August 26, 2011

Related articles

Last year, 85 cars were stolen in Singapore - or one car every four days on average.

These cars are often left unlocked or with their keys in the ignition, making them easy targets.

Older vehicles are especially susceptible because their worn-out locks make them easier to break into.

Last month, a car at a multi-storey carpark in McNair Road in the Boon Keng area was stolen. The owner had parked his Toyota Vios on the third storey at 8 a.m. and returned that same night to find it missing.

A sign calling for witnesses to the crime was put up at the carpark, but the vehicle has yet to be recovered.

Although the number of vehicle thefts here has come down over the years, the crime remains a concern for the police.

Last year, 987 vehicles were stolen, of which 85 were cars. The number of vehicles stolen in 2009 was 1,115 - of which 89 were cars - and in 2008 it was 1,178, with 94 cars among them.

A police spokesman said that in most cases, the culprits stole the vehicles for joyrides or for longer-term personal use.

A spokesman for Car Track, a firm which sells tracking devices to recover stolen vehicles, said it takes just two minutes for thieves to steal a vehicle.

A common method is to use a remote control which mimics the vehicle's locking system. Others simply jack the car up and tow it away.

Many of the stolen cars are Toyotas because of their popularity, and most are exported overseas or are dismantled by the thieves so their parts can be sold separately.

Private investigators and mechanics interviewed said Singapore cars are coveted overseas because they are generally less than 10 years old and have clocked low mileage.

Most are driven across the Causeway and then shipped farther afield.

As to whether any of the thefts in Singapore are linked to overseas car-theft syndicates, a police spokesman said there was only one case of this, in 2009.

That year, 55 Malaysian-registered vehicles which had been stolen in Malaysia were recovered in Singapore.

They were found to have been smuggled into Singapore by transnational smuggling syndicates, and were part of illegal shipping consignments to countries like South Africa, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, the issue of vehicle theft is something that international police organization Interpol is concerned about.

Its concern is how vehicle thefts can be used to aid crimes, and how the money obtained from their sales can also be used to fund other criminal activities.

"Car crime is a major and common component of organized crime, being one of the usual ways of obtaining the money needed to finance the whole criminal or even terrorist organization," an Interpol press officer based in France told The Straits Times.

He added that besides cars, the agency has also noticed an increasing global trend of heavy vehicles and trailers being stolen.

Many do not have electronic immobilizers, safety locks or alarm systems because owners assume these vehicles are too heavy and difficult to steal.

The thieves also go for heavy equipment such as excavators because those from the same production cycle can be operated with a common ignition key, and these machines are easily resold for profit.

The Singapore police could not provide figures on the number of heavy vehicle thefts.

To prevent your vehicle from being stolen, park it in a well-lit area, secure the windows and doors at all times, and install an anti-theft alarm.

"Many Singaporeans are not aware that cars are still being stolen here. They eventually learn it the hard way," said Car Track's spokesman.

The maximum penalty for motor vehicle theft is seven years' jail and a fine, plus a driving ban.

Punggol residents were surprised last Sunday to notice that the four wheels of a car in an HDB carpark had gone missing.

The weekend car, a Honda Fit, was at the carpark of Block 641A, Punggol Drive, and its owner is believed to be overseas.

Residents in the area called the police, who are now investigating the matter.

When The New Paper visited the carpark yesterday, the car was still there, propped up on bricks, with parts of its bumper damaged. It was also tilting to one side.

SINGAPORE: Another Singaporean has fallen prey to a "Scratch and Win" scam in Johor Bahru.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, the victim said she lost some 40,000 Malaysian Ringgit (S$16,000).

It is believed to be one of the highest amounts involved in the last two years.

68-year-old Mdm Chua has heard of such scams before, but she did not think she would be a victim of one.

She went to Johor Bahru alone last Wednesday and met a man and woman who claimed to be in charge of lucky draws at Sheng Siong supermarket.

They told her that she had won some electronic products, but she had to pay a sum of money to claim those prizes.

She then went to a bank teller to withdraw the money to pay them.

Mdm Chua managed to get a copy of the CCTV footage from the bank where she withdrew her cash.

One of the scammers' faces can be clearly seen in the footage, and Mdm Chua's family hopes this would aid the police in their investigations.

Police said there were 65 cases of such "Scratch and Win" scams in the first six months of the year -- six times more than the same period last year.

Mdm Chua said: "Those are my life savings.

"They said they're from Sheng Siong, so I thought I could trust them. Sheng Siong is in many places, so I wasn't worried."

Sheng Siong Group responded by saying that it does not have any branch in Malaysia and did not have any lucky draws in Malaysia.
