I think you have a misplaced idea of what happened. You make it sound like Britain and germany were playing a game of volleyball. After the war, the Allied powers charged the German generals and court and hanged a few.

I agree that the victors get to write history. But much of this is about economics and the Japanese are now beholden to the growing Chinese economic might.

As mentioned in my post, Japan, an export based economy has China as its LARGEST market. Then Japs have this huge debt problem and the Chinese are helping them with that. Read about how Gov is trying to get citizens to buy their bonds and ad projects image of how guys become more attractive to girls if they buy giv bonds!

So bo pian - they have to improve relationship with China. And this shrine issue is also verey divisive amongst nations in Asia.

Though I agree that we shouldn't bother the Japanese with Yasukuni, war crimes are different from acts of war. Britain never complained about any war crime against Germany, or vice versa. In fact, Germany gave British soldiers an Union Jack funeral when they killed them. Germany bombed Britain and Britain bombed Germany. That was war, not war crimes. German crimes against humanity was against German and other European Jews under its juridiction or occupation, massacring them when they were helpless without any power to even think about even being hostile.

Ditto Japanese, for what they did in China, Korea and much of SEA, including Singapore of course. The Singapore Shook Ching was of course part celebration of victory and part revenge against ethnic Chinese for their support and donation to China mainland resistance to Japanese resistance.

Wars can be fought, won or lost honorably, e.g. Napoleon. Who the hell in Europe or the world, even the victors, accuse him of being a war criminal? Stalin and Mao weren't war criminals too. Soldiers under them fought enemies honorably, killed enemies honorably and got killed by enemies honorably. Stalin and Mao murdered their own people after victory to consolidate their own grasp on power. That's a domestic crime for their own people to come to terms with, not a war crime.

Re-read my previous post. The German war criminals and Nuremberg trials were all about the Jewish holocaust. In all other fronts, from Blitzkrieg to the fall of France to the Dunkirk retreat to the Luftwaffe v. RAF Battle of Britain to the retaliation bombing of Dresdner, Cologne and Berlin etc. to the Normandy landing and invasion of Germany, the warfare was conducted as warfare by both. Nobody got charged or hung for that, whether victors or losers.

that's the whole point. it's about market maturity and how much more potential penetration of goods and services can be achieved in both export-oriented and domestic-driven economies. japan has reached a point (or peak) where growth becomes a struggle with an aging population and declining birth rates. per capita, if they continue the export drive, will get stronger and stronger with lower number of heads. but there's a limit when other countries catch up and start eating the export value chain of japan for lunch. china has another 20 years to go before they face the same aging and declining birth rate problem that japan is facing now. it's not about how many rich people you have now. rich folks who have been rich for decades don't buy consumer goods. poor folks who barely become rich do. it's about how many consumers you can grow for sustaining double digit gdp growth. if they continue at this rate, they would overtake the u.s. by 2030.

Only the SS was charged as war criminals while the Deutsche Heer, Luftwaffe and Kreigsmarine (Wehrmacht) was relieved of all charges in light of them treating POWs decently.

I do admit, the PRC government do use the Japan issue to distract the Chinese from the domestic problems they are facing (corruption, housing, etc). Hence after this apology, it will be better for the PRC to stop demanding for apologies. If you have noticed, South Korean government did not demand for an apology as much as the PRC. The few South Koreans who protested are usually comfort women. I guess to the South Koreans, North Korea is a bigger issue than Japanese past.

You are quite true about that. The Japanese still display the Imperial flag around whereas the Nazi swastika is strictly prohibited in all of Germany. And the right-wing groups are still blatant about how Japan never did anything wrong in the war.

As for Germany, France and Britain, the 'love' is always between France-Germany and Britain-France. One thing for sure, both Britain and Germany cannot stand the French.

However, while Japan is guilty as charged, America is even more guilty for not persecuting the real war criminals when they occupied Japan. Unit 731 was let off as long as the data was given to the Yanks.

Each time I come back from Shanghai, I worry for Singapore. I can see Beijing's aim. Recently they allowed wages to double. Just imagine the increase in purchasing power and the spin off effect. Beijing's main concern is wealth imbalance. But with a stronger tax system and more income to tax, Beijing will be able to redistribute $$$ to the inner and poorer regions. As it is Beijing is sitting on a pile of cash.
