I agree with you that this conflict is a religious conflict. Sadly, the moslems are much less likely than the jews to identify along the lines of religion since without religion, they don't have much of a culture. I've never read of any moslem imam who prohibited islamic imperialism. The moslem scripture about allah forbidding killing except in self defensive is used exclusively as a PR stunt to promote islam as a peaceful religion. Every single time throughout history, moslem imams endorsed moslem imperialism, piracy, slave raiding, kidnapping and looting. Most moslems, especially the apologists, are particularly proud of islamic territorial expansion through aggressive invasions. I don't see them talking about killing being prohibited.
