Apple iPhone 4S Elicits Mixed Web Reaction From Consumers

Voice command feature attracts attention but many express disappointment that an iPhone 5 was not introduced.
Tuesday's unveiling of Apple's iPhone 4S was met with mixed response online. The phone's new voice command features, dubbed Siri, is by far the most talked-about aspect of the updated product, with "Siri" out-trending "iPhone4S" or "iPhone" on Twitter boards. Other reactions to the newest Apple phone express disappointment that it wasn't the rumored iPhone 5.

iPhone 4S' voice assistant is dubbed Siri after the company Apple bought which pioneered the underlying technology. Siri, which calls itself a "humble assistant," allows users to have a natural language conversation with their iPhone. During the phone's rollout presentation, Apple exec Scott Forstall asked it, “What is the weather today?" The phone replied, "Here is the weather for today,” displaying the weather on the screen.

Apple has also set up partnerships with Yelp and Wolfram Alpha so the iPhone can answer more sophisticated questions. For example, to "find me a great Greek restaurant in Palo Alto," the phone responded, "I've located 14 Greek restaurants. Five are in Palo Alto. I've sorted them by rating."
This feature, and Siri in general, drew a number of comedic reactions:

iPHONE 4S DISAPPOINTMENT
On the surface the iPhone 4S looks exactly like the existing iPhone 4, but it has a supercharged engine under the hood. The 4S uses the same A5 chip found in the iPad2, so it offers 2X the processing speed and 7X the graphic performance of the existing iPhone. It also has eight hours of 3G talk time, ten hours of video watching, forty hours of music, and an upgraded 8MP camera, which delivers 3264 by 2448 resolution and the ability to print 8x10 inch photos.
These features were met with lukewarm responses online:

THE APPLE INVESTOR: Wall Street Says iPhone 4S Is A Disappointment In Name Only

Wall Street Reacts To The iPhone 4S, Disappointment In Name Only (Various)

Analysts weigh in:
Bernstein Research: Toni Sacconaghi believes the most intriguing part of Apple's announcement was that it did launch a low-priced iPhone SKU (the iPhone 3GS is free with a two-year contract) which could could add up to $4.50+ in annual EPS and launching on Sprint could add ~4 million units/$0.88 to FY12 estimates. Rating: Outperform. Price-Target: $510
Goldman Sachs: Bill Shope says the underlying hardware functionality improvements were quite substantial and that the market is underestimating the importance of Apple’s latest platform enhancements. He expects the shares to outperform in anticipation of a holiday season that should benefit from pent-up demand. Rating: Conviction List Buy.
Morgan Stanley: Katy Huberty believes the market tends to forget that software is what differentiates Apple from the competition. And that is the case again with iOS. Importantly, iPhone estimates look very conservative. Rating: Buy.
Piper Jaffray: Gene Munster believes Apple's decision to release an iPhone 4S, instead of a redesigned iPhone 5, will not have an impact on sales and to expect long lines. He still believes that the company will sell 25 million phones during the December quarter. Price-Target: $607
Bank of America Merrill Lynch: Scott Craig thinks investor focus should be more on the variety and the depth of software refinements, which should help Apple to extend its unified, technological leadership. Rating: Buy. Price-Target: $490
RBC Dominion Securities: Mike Abramsky says that with the still huge global iPhone opportunity, he remains constructive and views valuation as compelling. Catalysts include iCloud, iPhone 5, PC share gains, iPad 3, China. Rating: Outperform. Price-Target: $500.
Jefferies & Company: Peter Misek believes that the changes underneath the surface are sufficient to cause many current iPhone 3 and 3GS owners to upgrade and that the lower-priced 3GS will drive significant volumes in emerging and pre-paid markets. Rating: Buy. Price-Target: $500.
Citigroup: Richard Gardner says that while the iPhone 4S looks the same, it's impressive under the hood and it remains arguably the most compelling smartphone in the market. He remains comfortable with his estimate of 25 million iPhones during the holiday quarter and that that the lack of hardware redesign in the iPhone 4S could lead to better-than-expected gross margins. Rating: Buy / High Risk. Price-Target: $480.
Mostly positive, despite the negative perception yesterday.
The iPhone 4S Launch Round Up And Live Blogging Of The Event (Business Insider)
Everything you need to know in case you were more interested in watching the late market comeback yesterday.
iPhone 4S Specs (Business Insider): The design is exactly the same as the iPhone 4. It has an A5 Processor (like the iPad 2). The chip is 7x faster graphics than the current iPhone 4 chip. There's an 8 MP camera.
Free iPhone 3GS (Business Insider): Phone 3GS will soon be completely free after signing a two-year contract with your carrier. The device will come with 8GB of internal storage.
No More Antennagate (MacRumors): Apple has built significant antenna upgrades into the iPhone 4S with the ability to intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive.
No Facebook, But It's Coming (TechCrunch): While Facebook didn't take the stage yesterday, look for the company to send out invites to their own mobile-themed event sometime very soon. Both their HTML5 mobile platform (Spartan) and the iPad app are ready.
Killer iOS 5 Features (Business Insider): The list includes a notification center, newsstand, Twitter integration, location aware to-do lists, wireless syncing, etc.
"Find My Friends" Tracking (TechCrunch): Parents can now track their kids. Thank goodness this wasn't around when I was growing up. It's a map-based app that’ll let you see where your friends and family members are. Creepy.
Siri Voice Control (Business Insider): Touted as your "new personal assistant," the voice-activated software will help you juggle calendars, texts, emails all through voice control. Some think Siri will suck.
Cards App (Business Insider): Apple announced "Cards," a new app to help you mail physical greeting cards to friends and family. Boring.
iPod Touch Update (Business Insider): The 8GB Touch is getting a price cut from $229 to $199. That line will come in black and white and will get updated to iOS 5.
You can watch the whole media event over again here.
Tim Cook Spills Some Impressive Stats (MacStories)
At yesterday's iPhone 4S launch, CEO Tim Cook dropped some pearls:
iPod sales have exceeded 300 million units, with 45 million of those iPods sold since June.
The iPhone 4 now accounts for over half of all iPhones sold.
iTunes has also seen significant growth with over 20 million songs available.
18 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store and over 1 billion are downloaded monthly.
Over 500,000 apps are available on the App Store, with 140,000 for the iPad.
Apple has sold over 250 million iOS devices.
92% of Fortune 500 companies are testing and deploying the iPad.
Apple has announced it has paid $3 billion to developers so far.
How you like them apples?
Apple's New Leader's Defining Moment (Seeking Alpha)
Tim Cook's defining moment took place during his introductory speech. You could sense his excitement and enthusiasm as he showed the slides revealing 23% market share for the Mac and 5% market share for the iPhone. It captured the essence of Tim’s purpose at Apple. He is the operations guy. His legacy will be defined by his ability to take what Steve Jobs built and catapult these Apple products into the realm of critical mass.
Smartphone Market Share Statistics, Apple Inching Up This Year (eMarketer)
Relevant figures based on yesterday's iPhone launch:
The number of smartphone users in the U.S. will grow 49.6% to 90.1 million in 2011, up from just 60.2 million in 2010.
About 29% of U.S. smartphone users will use Apple devices this year, up from 28% in 2010. Google's share of the U.S. smartphone user market, however, is expected to reach 37% this year, up from 24% in 2010.
At least 38% of U.S. mobile phone users now use smartphones at least once per month, compared to just 26% in 2010. By 2012, more than 44% of the population will use smartphones at least once per month.
Who uses a smartphone just once a month.

Re: Iphone 5 is coming in sept, will you buy one?

Everyone was disappointed in the iPhone unveiling yesterday. Everyone. The Pope, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, the cashier at your gas station, your mom; You name it, they thought the 4S was a letdown.

But just as soon as the howls of outrage died down, there arose a second chorus, a group of people criticizing us for being disappointed, arguing that we had inflated expectations and ask too much of Apple.

Uber-blogger Jason Kottke probably put it most eloquently:

The wheel has been invented; now we'll perfect it. This is where Apple is at with the iPhone now, a conceptually solved problem: people know what they are, what they're used for, and Apple's gonna knuckle down and crank out ever better/faster/smarter versions of them in the future. Many of Apple's current products are like this, better than they have ever been, more popular than they have ever been, but there's nothing magical about them anymore: iPhone 4S, iPod, OS X, iMacs, Macbooks, etc.
I disagree.

If Apple were offering these things for free, then yes, complaining would be unseemly.

For example, if iOS 5 contains only minor upgrades over iOS 4, so what? It's a free update. It's nice to get anything.

But iPhones cost hundreds of dollars and lock their buyers into long-term commitments that cost hundreds of dollars more to break.

Apple isn't giving you something. It's making a sales pitch for you to buy something.

And in a financial transaction, your duty as a consumer is not to meekly fork over hundreds or thousands of dollars for whatever new product a company pumps out.

Instead, your duty is to push as hard as you can for as good a bargain as you can get. Demanding better things gets you better things.

More broadly, demanding innovation leads to actual innovation and new technologies that make life better.

So, no, if you're honestly disappointed with the iPhone 4S and can hold on to your current phone a little longer, don't settle.

The iPhone 5 is coming.

And I bet it's going to be amazing.

Steve Jobs is the business and marketing genius. Tim Cook is the techno geek. To the nerd, a slightly larger screen and a different shape means nothing. Performance means everything. With iPad 2 processor you get two times the overall performance and seven times the graphics speed. This is very noticeable and with sacrifice in battery life. Put in a 4-inch screen and, for iPhone 5, you really need to put in LTE/4G, the performance improvement will not be so obvious. That will have to wait for the new Qualcomm processor. Enjoy the performance of iPhone 4S while you can.

Jobs was brilliant at marketing they were brilliant! The new iPhone (just come out) still hasn't got a large 16:9 edge to edge screen and has only just upgraded its camera to 8MP, these were in the Xperia from early 2010.

People that buy Apple, are people that go for labels rather than quality, they also cannot read and compare specifications, obviously.

Great work Jobs, you got people to believe the hype. RIP

I suspected they are keeping the iphone 5 on hold. They are suppose to announce 2-3 models variant of the iphones, with the iphone 4s being the "cheap" version. This could be a brilliant marketing ploy because of his death.

What so good is a teardrop profile? Just a aesthetic change and soon people will get tired of it. To a techno geek, that Tim Cook is, performance is what matters. With a 4-inch screen, don't think you can achieve the two times overall improvement and seven times improvement in graphics performance with the same battery life. And you cannot have an iPhone 5 without LTE/4G. You need a new processor and a new battery.

I always believe that you need not be so pure in everything. An all-in-one does not preclude one from using a standalone device like a watch for example. A watch on the wrist is definitely a more convenient way to check time than a smartphone but without time-stamping on the phone it cannot act as a backup watch or tell when a missed call or message has reached you. Personally a smartphone does wonders to my lifestyle. I can make calls, message, read news, do Facebook, web surfing, book reading, audio listening, even checking SBF anywhere and anytime. I do not want this to be taken away. Thank you, Steve Jobs.

When you carry a huge amount of personal data on a mobile device that is easily misplaced, you need a very strong password to protect your privacy.
An Apple Enterprise Sales Engineer told me that it will take 2 years for a hacker to crack a strong password on one of their devices.

Following that, he anticipated my next question and threw his iPhone across the room. As if to add to my shock, he also threw his iPad across the room and ask his colleague to threw back the devices so that he can demostrate how easy it is to protect my devices with external shells.

After bouncing on the floor a few times, he picked up the devices and let me repeat the drop test again ... and again. Then he switched on the devices. Voila, they worked!

Yes. One of the many few things that man can carry on his body to show off. Another is a pen, a belt, a wallet and shoes. Maybe some people spend a lot on clothes and tie. Yes also glasses if you wear them. Any of these can cost as much or more than a smartphone.

Anyone would think they invented touch screen technology and the first Tablet - NOT!

Their products, which were leading in performance before 1993 never caught up with Windows and other companies like Hewlet Packard after that date. All the hype about their 68000 processor was flushed down the toilet in 2005 when they were forced to use Intel so their machines could run Windows progs!

In the early 90s all I heard in Desk Top publishing was how Apple were so great, but when you put a PC beside a Mac and ran Quark Express (Mac) and Ventura or Pagemaker (PC), there was no difference in speed, but the PC software was better.

Now the hype is about iPhone when Sony X10 and Arc outperform it with Android. iPhone has only about 18% of the marked and dropping, soon iPhone will have to adopt Android, just like they had to concede to running Windows.

As I have said before, people that have bought Apple products are the same people that buy designer labels, they don't get value for money, just a name.
