1 in 9 Singaporeans aged between 18 to 69 suffer from a Diabetes. This is an alarming statistic that translates to about 400,000 sufferers in our country. It is a chronic disease that can be avoided through the right prevention measures and early detection of its symptoms. In partnership with Mercy Community Care Society and Medtronics International Limited, HGCC organized the first Diabetic Awareness Talk on 3rd August 2013 between 1pm to 5pm at the void deck of Blk 24 Hougang Avenue 3. The objective of the event is to educate the senior citizens and vulnerable groups in our community with knowledge and ways to prevent themselves from falling victim to Diabetes. About 60 residents attended the talk where qualified medical personnel and podiatrists were on site to provide 1 to 1 consultation for our residents who suffer from the condition as well as group consultation for general knowledge for the other participants.

On the evening of 31st August 2013, residents of Hougang SMC gathered together at the basketball court in front of Blk 332 Hougang Ave 5 to celebrate Hari Raya with their family members, neighbours and friends. The celebrations began at 8:00pm to the thunderous beat of the kampong, marking the arrival of MP for Hougang SMC, Mr Png Eng Huat, and his fellow MPs from Punggol East SMC and Aljunied GRC. Residents were served with a delicious buffet dinner of nasi briyani. As residents sat down to enjoy the sumptuous dinner, they were entertained by a couple of traditional Malay dance performances, and many evergreen Hari Raya songs sung by the melodious voice of local singer Rosie Rahim. A couple of our MPs also got into the act, with MP for Aljunied GRC, Mr Chen Show Mao, reciting a Malay pantun, and MP Mr Png singing a Hari Raya song. Some of our residents were also given the chance to go on stage to try their hands at making ketupat and wearing the samping. Of course, no celebration is complete without a lucky draw, and one lucky resident was lucky enough to walk away with a new TV! With all the good food, good entertainment and great fun, 31st August 2013 was truly a night to remember for our residents who had gathered together to celebrate this year’s Hari Raya. We look forward to seeing everyone again in next year!
