HGCC held our first ‘National Day Children's Art Competition’ on 9 August 2013. Apart from the attractive prizes to be won, we also have other interesting activities such as balloon sculpturing, history quiz and mini games. We also invited a art teacher, Mdm Yiak, to conduct a lesson on the usage of different colouring mediums. The children, accompanied by their family members, gathered as early as around 8am for the registration. Upon collection of their drawing papers and goodie bags, the 50 young participants scattered themselves around the park and started on their art pieces. It has also been a touching experience for our volunteers to witness young children mixing and preparing their own water paints and drawing materials professionally, then started working attentively on their individual drawings. Foods and drinks were sponsored and prepared by our enthusiastic Hougang residents for the young artists and the residents who attended the event. Some of the residents even brought small tables for their children and their young neighbours to draw on. From the art pieces submitted, we are very proud to say that Hougang got talents!

This 7th Month association at Blk 24 Hougang Ave 3 decided to call it a day after 34 years. The committee members bid everyone goodbye and gave all a toast at their last dinner on 18 Aug 2013. For over twenty years, associations like this group supported the Hougang Constituency Education Trust. The trust gave out almost 100 bursaries to needy Hougang children last year.
I thank this group of community leaders for serving the residents of Hougang well all these years. Here's wishing them good health and happiness on their well deserved retirement.

1 in 9 Singaporeans aged between 18 to 69 suffer from a Diabetes. This is an alarming statistic that translates to about 400,000 sufferers in our country. It is a chronic disease that can be avoided through the right prevention measures and early detection of its symptoms. In partnership with Mercy Community Care Society and Medtronics International Limited, HGCC organized the first Diabetic Awareness Talk on 3rd August 2013 between 1pm to 5pm at the void deck of Blk 24 Hougang Avenue 3. The objective of the event is to educate the senior citizens and vulnerable groups in our community with knowledge and ways to prevent themselves from falling victim to Diabetes. About 60 residents attended the talk where qualified medical personnel and podiatrists were on site to provide 1 to 1 consultation for our residents who suffer from the condition as well as group consultation for general knowledge for the other participants.
