Going down Food Memory Lane, Old Restaurants/Coffehouses of yesteryear

Izzit so!..then I must go and check out the Shepherd's pie..no so crazy about marzipan...will nibble a little when Christmas comes around..nowadays they have not even heard of it...

Around this time of the year...English Fruit Cake come to mind...the very deliciously ones..with rum in it.....where can one, find a good authentic English Fruit Cake these days?, never mind the Vegan, Organic or new diet or the keep healthy ...just a good English Fruit Cake!!:D

Marks & Spencers has English Fruit Cake. They are gross!! :p:p:p

Yes do try and check out Quentin's whenever you have the time. He is a darn good eurasian chef and uses fresh quality ingredients.

To me when I think of marzipan, I think of wedding cakes. Sadly as you said, I hardly see such cake toppings anymore. The one at Quentin's is made by his mum, lovely marzipan glazed topping and rich moist fruitcake below.

Oh and at Christmas time I am quite partial to mince pies, sherry and eggnog:)

I saw Marzipan cakes and mince pies at Marks & Spencers. Is it more for the nostalgic factor or the taste? :)

You guys must be around my time. The good old days of food and excitements. Wonder you have been those time at Penang Road where illegal motor cycle racings around midnight. I was riding a 500cc Honda but never race. That was in 1975,1976. Also I was testing the speed of my bike along part of PIE which was not opened and had to enter via
SICC golf club and some Malay villages to PIE.

When you guys mentioned English Fruit Cake, for a moment I thought you were saying there's a madmansg in London!:D

Not that kind of 'fruitcake', brother!, still yearning for a real English Fruitckae, with all the 'works' including the rum; not these days, health conscious stuff.

It is the end of the year, it is time to be 'sinful'...:D

One of the best threads ever. For some reason, food and sex seem to get in the way. 3 places of assignation where food met sex - Sloan Court Hotel, Ladyhill Hotel where the phone operators were the best - you make reservation and date at the same time and Jackie's Bowl Katong. Can't miss.

For me nothing can beat the old esplanade Satay Club satay (beef was the best) with the whole works of peanut sauce ketupat cucumber raw onions washed down with a cold Tiger, pure bliss but had to remember to take tic tacs after that if not could not canoodle and rabaraba with the SYT chiobus later on:rolleyes::D

The original satay club was next to the now torn down Pavilion cinema. A pity though, as the facade of the cinema was full of character. The malay satay men would carry their wares to their usual spot every evening and lit their kerosene lamps there. Quite often we would challenge each other to see who can eat the most sticks of satay.

A combination of both really. It has been a tradition in my family and extended family to have marzipan cakes, mince pies, sherry, eggnog etc during the blessed festive season for family and friends. When I was studying and working in the UK, the tradition was reinforced, use to have yummy mince pies and sherry with my college tutors in their study by the warm cosy hearth and thereafter with my colleagues and seniors in the office.

Before my grandma, mum, godma and aunts actually use to make and bake the same from scratch, sadly quite afew have passed on. So now I get my fix from hotel pastry shops and places like Quentin's. Younger generation just don't have the time or more so can't be bothered to 'slave' away in the kitchen.

Ah yes traditional english fruitcake. My grandma use to put coins 10cents, 20 cents, 50 cents in the cakes that she made. Poured brandy on it and then lit it up for presentation, after which us youngsters would quickly dig in with our spoons to see if we could get any of those coins, what a treat but had to becateful not to get my fingers burnt:rolleyes::D

How about Oasis for porridge and omlette?

Also liked to go to a crepe shop in Jalan Merah Saga off Holland V for savoury crepes.

Oh and also enjoyed Wendy's grilled burgers, to me they always tasted better than Macs and Burger King, but real greasy.

No1 Satay stall the best, the old man with his bamboo fan (remember his picture of the cover of a book?O, his son or whoever took over after he died of heart attack, the taste went dwon the drain. Hie Perut satay , is so yummy, don't think can find any perut satay these days, not to mention his succulent kambing, beef, & chicken, like you say, drown with Tiget Beer...ooohhh:D

You mean, you adjourned to one quiet corner of QEII walk?, and do the rubaba ? or spread poncho across the road, in the shade of the trees in the padang? no? but you don;t need tic tac, after all, bot of you are eating the same stuff?

Satay these days, just not the same, with those hand made ones...

I loved that crepe shop! The mushroom (or was it beef?) stroganoff was good.

I thought Baron's Table is at Goodwood Park?

I had icky food at Compass Rose though. :p

I think the square patties at Wendy's was funny, didn't get to eat those though. What about the curly fries at A&W?

Yes, I had been to Medo at Outram Park. It was slightly out of the way and I discovered it when I was wondering away from Pearl Center. There was also a dim sum outlet just below Medo - I think. I wonder where has it gone to ??

And, YES, you are definitely right about those sarong kebaya clad waitresses..... :p

Which year was this? :)

If one could remember the hawker stalls facing the Singapore River, the ones outside the old NRIC Office ( now some Asian Musem), first the Char Kway Teow stall, the 'yong tau foo' stall, that starts at 11am and finishes at 2.20pm daily, you have to wait half and hour for your food.

Then by the river, back of Chartered Bank( then later SCB), you have the row of stalls, you have the lovely the wanton mee, the Indian muslim food stalls, the Malay Food Stalls ( real Malay Food, not like today), the je char stall, kam chia juice, fruit juice stall..(sugar cane)..etc.. so many yummy ones..

then over to Golden Shoe Carpark....second floor, the fish ball noodle,( still around, serve by a effeminate man), good stuf, I mean the food, the Indian nasi lemak... started by this Indian man,the orginal with the choice of deep fried chicken wing/drumstick, fried egg or boiled egg, white lemak nasi or the pandan flavoured one, etc., all for $2.50 ( Punggol Nasi Lemak is an imitator), unfortunately the stall owner died of a sudden heart attack, then the quality just went out of the door, and now, there are plenty of "ORIGINALS" around....then the seafood soup stall, the one with the clear fish soup with a medium size prawn with rice, old man starts at 11am, by 2,30pm.....then to the third floor, we have the Indian Mee Siam stall, by the Indian man, the same type of Indian that sells bread on a bicycle,..a bowl of mee siam with an egg ontop plus one tau gua, and no hum...ha ha ha $1.40 only, you will so filled, no dinner is required.

Golden Shoe Carpark..Han's...good food, & their second or first shop at the Arcade...good fish & chips..

Malacca Street..long house...the famous po piah...and my once a week, vegetarian day...eat at Muruga's Vegstarian Resturant, where the serve you food on banana leaf, rice comes in a bucket, and papadum...

There are just too many....my fingers are tired!!!:D
