Going down Food Memory Lane, Old Restaurants/Coffehouses of yesteryear

I think it was a German/Austrian restuarant but not Barons Table, can't recall the name though.
...Barons Table at the Holiday Inn in the 70's at Scotts Rd(Opposite Goodwood). This was before the Sultan of Brunei bought the place.
Vienna Cafe. Nice pastries at happy hours pricing (meaning from about 5pm to clear day's stocks). $$ memories, my 1st gf preferred to eat there:o

Silver Spoon, at old Supreme House with cheap set lunches. And Magnolia snack bars at old Cold Storage ORchard Rd and Capitol cinema. Cheap comfort food, and treats before advent of Svensons:p

Former Rex cinema, side lane with mamak stalls. Same for old Cathay cinema, near longkangs. Sabarat stalls too, where you could jaw over a teh tarik and cheapo nasi lemak in tiny packets. Before sanitisation of hawker centres aka food centres:D

Was it more expensive?

Well not sure coz ;):) we ate different things at different places. Had sushi at Shima and teppanyaki at Inagiku.

Inagiku's premium teppanyaki set was more expensive than any other place I knew of, except Suntory. I think it was because of the Kobe beef. :)

Kurama's sushi was very very good. There was always this young waitress with a bad attitude though. Don't know if it's because she didn't like serving someone her age. :D

For me nothing can beat the old esplanade Satay Club satay (beef was the best) with the whole works of peanut sauce ketupat cucumber raw onions washed down with a cold Tiger, pure bliss but had to remember to take tic tacs after that if not could not canoodle and rabaraba with the SYT chiobus later on:rolleyes::D

So you had main course, thirst quencher and desert. Best combination for an evening out. :D

Great sun brunch there then. Kns, I had my small wedding lunch reception cocktail there. Cost me a small fortune, with drinks costing more than food:(

Food is already quite pricey there, so if you say drinks costing more than food, I believe it cost you an arm and a leg.

And snrcitizen, oh car park...recall that cowboy bloke who hused to hang around. Quite a draw with tourists

Always thought the guy was off his rockers, but still good for entertainment.

Silver Spoon was known as Skillets if I remembered correctly.

It was a husband and wife team, I think. Both divorced, fell out, and change the name from Skillets to Silver Spoon.

Sorry for being off-topic.
But after my 'performance' we usually sit back to enjoy the delicious burgers & root-beer there.:)

Of course that was an intermission preceding a second helping while time permits before the performance (on screen, I mean) comes to a conclusion and lights are turned on, right? :p :D

Ah yes, now I remember when you mentioned Skillets. Was the couple who owned it Hainanese? I was raking my brains when Silver Spoon was mentioned. Thanks.

Did you remember a HK company opened a place called Happy Valley? This is what I heard from those who patronised the place. The owner was extremely Happy while his patrons' finances were in a Valley. :D

I remember Happy Valley at the Singapore Shopping Centre. They cooked up all manner of weird dishes and apparently got a lot of custom. I never went there myself - just did not make sense.

To the other samsters who mentioned Rendezvous, there was a similar restaurant just next to or a few doors from Rendezvous. Can anyone remember its name - Tiong Hua?

Neither did I patronise Happy Valley. Just heard horror stories from the victims.

Yes, there was a similar restn to Rendezvous a few doors away. Remembering the name is beyond me now. However, those days Rendezvous had better business. Not sure if food quality was better as I never tasted the food at the other one for comparisation.

Was that the restaurant next to the alley?

I remember eating there & found the food "spicy" compared to the more popular Rendezvous.

And copious use of tissues.
Err, wet ones also come in handy:p

Anybody had fond memories of A&W straddling across Dunearn/Bkt Timah? Popular with old NUS. Recall only drive-in then.

I loved going on dates to Red House cafe!! :p:p:p I loved the glass cups in saucers and the hainanese style cakes!3:):):) The old style booth seats, the low rotating fans, the glass counters where the cakes are placed. WOW! ;)

:p

The Red House Cafe at Katong?

That was where the late Eddie Barker met Auntie Gloria, his beloved wife.

The two brothers from HK who operated Happy Valley Restaurant were very involved with horse-racing in S'pore/Malaysia.

They lost heavily, got indebted and they were on the run and eventually the both of them were brutally murdered in their
hotel-room in Taipeh during the late 70's or early 80's.

In the racing fraternity, they were known as HK kias or HK chais. At their peak, they were so influential that they could move
the totes/dividends at the racing centres.

Good memory. Knew that there was a former name for the ANA but could not recall until you mentioned Sheraton. Thanks.

It was Sheraton for not a very long time...it is known better as ANA hotel, there was a disco there...is the hotel still there?

Remember Hotel Malaysia or something...near to where Tanglin Mall is, it is now a service apartments..
