Man jailed for giving $800 bribe to technical officer

Published on Apr 9, 2012
By Elena Chong

A site supervisor who conspired with another man to give a $800 bribe to a SPPowerGrid technical officer, was on Monday, jailed for three weeks.

Ng Ah Tai, 55, a Malaysian employed by Ley Choon Construction and Engineering, pleaded guilty to abetting freelance jointer Chua Kar Leng to corruptly give the bribe to then-technical officer Ahmad Aman, 54, so that he would not report truthfully to SPPowerGrid that the cable damage at Marina Place was caused by Ley Choon in March 10 2011.

He had transferred the amount to Chua, 45, who withdrew the money and handed it to Ahmad as gratification. Ahmad has since completed his four-week jail term while Chua was jailed four weeks in March.

The court heard that Ahmad attended to a power failure at Marina Street on March 5, 2011. After identifying the source of the outage, Ng was called to the site. Ahmad also contacted Chua, who came down and assessed that the damage was not serious and carried out remedial works.

Maid jailed 3 months for ill-treating toddler

Published on Apr 10, 2012
By Khushwant Singh

The video footage was of a maid feeding a child but it had flashes of sudden violence that startled a district court on Tuesday. There was the scene of Myanmar maid Su Su Hlaing, 31, flinging a knife onto a sofa that was next to the four-year-old girl. She later pointed its 20cm blade at the frightened toddler.

Hlaing was jailed three months. She had pleaded guilty to committing criminal intimidation by alarming the child with the knife.

Another charge of slapping and pulling the hair of the toddler was taken into consideration by District Judge Siva Shanmugam when sentencing her.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Jason Chua told the court that the mother became suspicious when her four-year-old daughter would cry when she left for work in the morning, saying that she did not want the maid to feed her. She and her husband then bought a spy camera and installed it in the living room of their Punggol flat on Feb 9.

Police have arrested two men for theft-related offences on board separate Singapore Airlines flights on Saturday.

In the first case which took place on board a Singapore Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Singapore, a 38-year-old man was spotted by a cabin crew to have removed a laptop bag from an overhead compartment located several seats in front of him.

Rag-and-bone man, Woo Fok Meng, 54, was jailed six weeks on Wednesday for outraging the modesty of a 39-year-old woman during the Hari Raya Open House at the Istana on Aug 30 last year. -- ST PHOTO: WONG KWAI CHOW

SINGAPORE: A rag-and-bone man was sentenced on Wednesday to six weeks' jail for molesting a woman last year at the Istana Open House over the Hari Raya public holiday.

Fifty-four-year-old Woo Fok Meng pleaded guilty to squeezing the woman's buttocks while watching a band performance there on August 30 last year.

The mother of three confronted Woo and then alerted the police.

Woo's lawyer, Josephus Tan, asked for leniency as the offence was committed on the spur of the moment and the offending act was brief.

Court documents revealed that Woo, a Malaysian, was jailed six months in 1999 for a similar offence.

He was then deported to Malaysia after serving his sentence, and returned to Singapore July last year for job opportunities.

The court heard that Woo would most likely be deported again.

For outrage of modesty, Woo could have been jailed up to two years, fined and caned.

Illegal barbers raided by MOM officers

NABBED: One of the four foreign workers who was allowed to collect his belongings before being led away.

By Fabian Koh
The New Paper

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

Hair one minute, gone the next.

Foreign workers who had set up their own makeshift barber stalls under the Bartley Road East viaduct scrambled for cover when the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) raided the area on Sunday.

An MOM spokesman said two Bangladeshi and two Indian nationals were arrested for breaching Work Permit conditions.

The New Paper visited the area after receiving complaints from shops at the nearby Kaki Bukit Avenue 3 industrial area.

One reader who called the TNP hotline said the makeshift stalls were stealing business from legitimate barbers nearby and were also leaving a mess.

National Environment Agency (NEA) officers were on the scene at 11.40am conducting enforcement checks.

The NEA team spotted six foreign workers conducting their business, and rounded them up. Two escaped.

The four caught were issued summons for offences under the Environmental Public Health (Public Cleansing) Regulations.

Offenders can be fined up to $1,000.

The same foreign workers then had a double whammy when MOM officers arrived in a convoy of two vans and a car.

The workers were lined up along the pavement - they were issued summons by the NEA, then handcuffed and arrested by MOM.

The MOM spokesman said that foreign workers should only work for the employer specified in their work permit.

They should not be self-employed or moonlight.

Those caught doing so will face a fine not exceeding $15,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both.

The makeshift stalls were located under a viaduct, on the road divider along Kaki Bukit Avenue 3.

Each of the illegal barber stalls was a simple set-up consisting of just a stool on a canvas mat, weighed down by stones at the four corners.

They were all well-equipped with battery-operated shavers, mirrors, spray bottles, bottles of shaving foam and hair gel.

The haircuts are said to have cost $4 per worker.

TNP understands the arrested men were from the foreign workers dormitory across the road.

The four men were handcuffed, and taken away to collect their belongings from their stalls, before being put in a van and driven off.

Former SBS driver jailed a week over fatal crash

SINGAPORE - An SBS bus driver was Monday sentenced to a week in jail and disqualified from driving for a year for her role in an accident which left a 19-year-old motorcyclist dead.

On Nov 9 last year, 36-year-old Chen Hongyan was driving bus service 209 when she hit Temasek Polytechnic student Toh Jia Wei.

Turning right at the junction of Tampines Avenue 8 and Tampines Street 84, she did not see Mr Toh riding his motorcycle in the opposite direction.

Chen, who had been an SBS Transit bus driver for just a month, cut into his path and he crashed into the bus. Mr Toh died six hours later at Changi General Hospital.

The Straits Times reported that video footage from a camera on board the bus confirmed that the teenager had the right of way and that Chen had a clear view of the rider and motorcycle.

The prosecution pushed for a jail term of two weeks while Chen, who did not have a lawyer, pleaded for a fine.

She said she had a debt of $6,000 which she had not yet cleared.

The Chinese national added that she is a single parent and is supporting a daughter and her aged mother in China. Asking for forgiveness, she said that not a day passes without her regretting what had happened.

Noting that Mr Toh was not negligent, District Judge Low Wee Ping ruled that a fine would not be appropriate.

She could have been jailed for up to two years, or fined up to $10,000, or sentenced to both.

Title : Facebook co-founder Saverin to stay in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin intends to stay in Singapore but has no plans to take up citizenship after giving up his US passport, a move that could save him millions in taxes, his spokesman said.

The Brazilian moved in 2009 to Singapore, a low-tax Asian technology and finance hub where he mingles with entrepreneurs and is regularly seen in exclusive clubs with a young circle of expatriate and Singaporean friends.

"Eduardo is a permanent resident of Singapore. I am not aware of any plans for him to take up Singapore citizenship," his New York-based press agent Tom Goodman told AFP in an email late Tuesday.

"He is a citizen of Brazil, his native country," Goodman added.

The media-shy Saverin, 30, was born to a wealthy family in Brazil, moved to the United States in 1992 and became an American citizen in 1998.

His recently disclosed decision to give up his US citizenship last year ahead of Facebook's hotly anticipated share offering this week was seen as an attempt to reduce his exposure to US capital gains tax.

But Goodman said Saverin "has found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time."

Goodman declined to state Saverin's existing stake in Facebook but the website "Who Owns Facebook?" estimated his share at 4.0 per cent worth around $3.4 billion.

"Eduardo is focused on helping push forward the next wave of innovation on the web, much of which has been propelled and made possible by the growing ubiquity of social platforms such as Facebook," Goodman said.

Saverin has already invested in a number of firms including Anideo, a Singapore-based tech firm that specialises in developing mobile applications for Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating platforms, he added.

Saverin was an economics major in Harvard University when he co-founded Facebook in 2004 with three fellow students including the social networking site's current chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

Saverin's role in the early years of Facebook was famously portrayed in the 2010 film "The Social Network" in which he started out as a close friend of Zuckerberg and provided the initial funds for the site.

He left Facebook after an acrimonious spat with Zuckerberg but is believed to still retain a small but lucrative stake in the firm.

Facebook on Tuesday raised its initial public offering price to between $34 and $38 per share, up from a range of $28 to $35, giving the California-based company a valuation of $93-104 billion.

It could raise nearly $15 billion through the stock sale at the higher end of the price range.
