Viet jailed, caned for harassing

By Elena Chong

A VIETNAMESE national who came to Singapore to look for a job ended working for an unlicensed moneylender to harass several house occupants. On Wednesday, Nguyen Van Thanh, 25, was sentenced to 16 months' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on five charges under the Moneylenders Act.

A district court heard that he found work peddling contraband cigarettes in Geylang shortly after his arrival on Sept 5. He later switched to harassing house occupants on behalf of loansharks, as he felt he was not earning enough as a cigarette pedlar.

Via short message service, a Vietnamese named Truu sent him the addresses of units to splash paint on and deface walls, for which he would be paid $50 a day. He would visit about five to six units a day. He did this for four days before he and a fellow Vietnamese, Hoa Quang Luc, 32, were arrested on Sept 21. Hoa's case is pending.

SINGAPORE: An Indonesian maid was jailed four months on Thursday for making a false police report, claiming that her employer's mother had abused her.

23-year-old Susanti had even splashed hot water on herself to frame 62-year-old Tjong Inggrid Tirtasari.

Susanti, who had accused Madam Tjong of splashing hot water on her, even had blisters down her back to prove her point.

The maid later admitted that the injuries were self-inflicted.

She had splashed hot water on herself as she did not want to continue working for her employer.

Police were notified of the alleged case of maid abuse at around 3pm on July 1 after an employee at the Indonesian Embassy called the authorities about the incident.

Assistant Superintendent Gabriel Chen interviewed Susanti at the Tanglin Police Division Headquarters at 8.25pm.

The maid claimed that Madam Tjong had splashed hot water on her between 10am and noon that day.

Susanti left her employer's Bishan flat and made her way down to the Indonesian Embassy soon after the alleged abuse.

Because of this false accusation, officers arrested Madam Tjong that evening and she was placed in police custody for nearly three hours.

The elderly woman was released on a bail of S$5,000 dollars at around 2am on July 2.

Susanti only admitted to Assistant Superintendent Chen on August 4 that she had fabricated the whole story as she had wanted to be sent home to Indonesia without having to settle an outstanding loan with her agency.

For giving false information to the police, Susanti could have been jailed up to a year, fined up to S$5,000 or both.

Maid jailed for theft, lying
A maid stole from her employer's mother-in-law twice and put the blame of the ex-maid. -AsiaOne

SINGAPORE - A maid stole from her employer's mother-in-law twice and put the blame of the ex-maid.
Desi Kurnia Dewi, 23, was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Monday.
On May 27, Desi was found lying unconscious on the ground, with two chairs on top of her. Lying beside her was her employer's mother-in-law, Madam Chan Har Mooi, 68, who was also down.
The maid told police that she was assaulted by ex-maid Siti Mariah. For that, Siti Mariah went to jail for two weeks.
On June 11, Desi handed $500 to Madam Chan and asked her to purchase an air ticket for her to go home, claiming her family members had sent her the money.
However, Madam Chan checked and realised that $2,888 was missing from a red box in a drawer. In her statement to the police, she again alleged that Siti Mariah had instigated her to steal.
Police investigations later found that she had actually staged the earlier robbery. She feigned some bruises on her arms and pretended to have passed out.
Desi could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined for theft as a servant. For giving false information to the police, she could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $5,000.

$82,000 profit from illicit cough mixture business

$82,000 profit from illicit cough mixture business

By Khushwant Singh

A MYANMAR national would order thousands of litres of cough syrup from an agent here, repack it in 90ml or 60ml bottles and sell it in Geylang for $15 or $10 for each bottle If Tin Ko Oo, 40, had sold all 5,080 litres that he had with him, the profit would be more than $82,000, Deputy Public Prosecutor Gail Wong told a district court on Tuesday.

Tin was operating illicitly and on Tuesday he pleaded guilty to having six types of medicinal ingredients classified under the Poisons Act without a licence. These poisons were found in the cough mixture and in the 2,000 pills found in a storage area in Boon Keng Road and another in Kallang Way in January this year.

Tin, who is a chemistry graduate, will be sentenced on Dec 23. He could be fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed up to two years on each of the six charges. The court heard that the foreigner, who is here on a Special Pass, had been selling the cough mixture since 2008 and earning about $5,000 a month.

His company, Golden Champion International is located in Peninsula Plaza in North Bridge Road but the cough mixture would be sold by Denis Ko Weiqiang at Lorong 9 Geylang. Investigations revealed that Tin would pay Ko $60 a day.

Asking for a stiff sentence, DPP Wong pointed out that Tin should be dealt with more severely than his runner Ko, who was jailed four months in March.

Trio fined for casino offences

By Elena Chong

THREE men were fined between $3,000 and $5,000 on Tuesday for casino-related offences while three others had their cases adjourned.

One of them, Chinese national Liu Shimeng, 32, a construction worker, was fined $1,000 for criminal trespass and another $2,000 for entering the Marina Bay Sands casino when he was subject to an exclusion order by the Commissioner of Police.

The casino had issued a persona non grata against him on Sept 27 after he was convicted of theft at the casino. He had entered via the foreigner lane, after flashing his work permit on Nov 14.

Two others - Ng Eng Sing, 32, a Singaporean, and Chinese national Chen Rong Deng, 25 - were fined $5,000 each in the same court for trying to cheat the casino by using the identities of others to get in last month. Ng tried to do it in July, while Chen tried it in November.

A CHINESE national who had 48 infringing copies of pirated movies was fined $48,000 on Wednesday.

Guan Zhenbang, 24, a sales manager, had pleaded guilty to four charges of having pirated recordings published by Universal City Studios, Sony Pictures Releasing International Corporation and Paramount Pictures Corporation, for sale at Sim Lim Square at Rochor Canal Road on April 23.

Among the recordings he had were Bourne Identity, Spiderman, Quantum of Solace, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Shrek. The court heard that Guan came to Singapore in 2005 to pursue a course in electrical engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and subsequently at Nanyang Technological University under a scholarship programme from the Ministry of Education.

Initially, he started a small business in digital photo frames and subsequently sold media players, which was highly successful. When he noticed that more customers were heading to a neighbouring shop to buy hard disks with pre-loaded movies, he decided to do the same by paying a customer to buy one from the shop.

Later, he bought more movies from the neighbouring shop surreptitiously and collected them for use in his business. He amassed nine catalogues of movie titles which he could offer to his customers when they bought the hard disks. A blank hard disk would be sold for $150 while a hard disk uploaded with movies, $200 to $220.

A police party raided the shop and kiosk at the building and seized the hard disks at the building that day, and the hard disks with pirated movies.
He could have been fined up to $10,000 per article. Eight other similar charges were considered during his sentencing.

MOLESTER HELD VICTIMS AT KNIFEPOINT

Masked molester jailed

By Khushwant Singh

A MACHINE operator would don a surgical mask when he preyed on young women in the Jurong West area. His dismay was clearly evident on Friday when he was sentenced to five years in jail and 18 strokes of the cane for molesting five women, three at knifepoint.

A district court heard that Tan Chee Wei, 21, had even targeted a 23-year-old sales assistant twice. On the first occasion on Aug 16, the masked Malaysian had followed her down the bus to her block of flats.

As she got out of the lift, he pulled out a penknife and forced her to go to the sixth-floor staircase landing. There, he pulled down his shorts and her panties. He put on a plastic glove to touch her private parts. Once he noticed she was menstruating, he walked away.

Nine days later, he saw her walking in the neighbourhood and followed her home and attacked her again. This time, he fondled her breasts and inserted his finger into her. He fled when she screamed for help.

He molested the other women at knifepoint on Aug 20 and 22. Tan also pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of a 27-year-old by hugging her and stroking her hip on Aug 7. For this, he was jailed three months.

Some family members had come down from Malaysia and he smiled weakly at them as he was led off to prison by a police officer.

A Foriegn Talent came to sg in the year 2000.
He worked here & there managed to open a company or 2, dealing in God knows what.
Managed to apply for a PR and stated getting some bank credit cards and fast cash services. Managed to roll them for a few years and in year 2002.
Since,he was a PR, he got a flat, a 5 room flat which was cheap then, since he had many of his foriegn friends around, he partitioned his 5 room flat and just lived off rent.
Along came Mah Bow Tan, who stopped building flats and HDB flat prices shot up. The PR now thought of getting rid of his flat.
He made some hefty profit by selling the 5 room flat in 2009.
By the way, his credit card and fast cash bills chocked up.
He did not even pay HDB a several months of installment.
Nevertheless, upon the sale, he made about SGD$100,000.
His credit card & fast cash with several banks was also another few $100,000.
He has since, left the country. Last I heard, he is happily married and living in a fine house back in his home country. He has a shop, doing some trading.
What a nice happy ending, By the way this is not a story. It is real.
I have living proof and documents, if need be, to show.
How nice, Singapore抯 system has been to this person.
Now the burden of paying for the flat for the next 30years.

Jailed for forging for married boyfriend

By Elena Chong

A FORMER hotel assistant housekeeping executive who forged payment vouchers for her married boyfriend for work purportedly done, was jailed for six weeks on Wednesday.

Malaysian Jennifer Chong Cheng Yoong, 41, had admitted to 10 of 116 counts of forgery involving $1,092 in February 2010. The accomplice, Muhammad Saufi Idross, 37, has since been charged. His case is at pre-trial stage.

The court heard that between August 2009 and February 2010, Chong helped Saufi get salary payments for work he did not do at the hotel by forging 116 casual labour payment vouchers so that he could use them to claim salary payments.

Saufi used the vouchers and submitted them to claim salary payments amounting to $14,851. Chong, whose lawyer said she committed the offences out of love for the father of two, had paid back the sum to the hotel.

Her lawyer Lim Kia Tong said she did not gain anything from the help she had given to Saufi who gained from all the money taken and was also paid for the employer's Central Provident Fund contributions to his account.

She could have been jailed for up to four years and/or fined on each charge.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SINGAPORE: A Malaysian driver has been fined S$18,000 after he was caught trying to smuggle whiskey from across the causeway.

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers checked the driver's vehicle after a loose bolt on its floorboard roused the officers' suspicion.

The smuggler had tried to hide the whiskey in the fuel tank of a Malaysia-registered car, at the Woodlands Checkpoint on December 17.

After a full examination, the ICA officers found a metallic box that had been installed inside the fuel tank, which contained more than 50 litres of duty-unpaid whisky.

The customs duty and GST amount came up to almost S$2,000.

The driver faces up to 12 weeks' jail if he fails to pay the fine.

ICA said if convicted of importing uncustomed goods, first-time offenders can be fined up to 20 times the duty amount evaded and jailed up to three years.

Subsequent offenders face twice the fine amount and jail term.

Nurhayati, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was originally thought to be 24 years of age, but investigations by her lawyer and Indonesian diplomats proved that she was only 16, the Straits Times newspaper reported.
According to Singapore law, any person below 18 found guilty of a capital charge would not face the death penalty.
Nurhayati is accused of killing 12-year-old Linda Lee, who was found dead in an apartment block on November 24.
The case raised the question how the teen managed to find a job in Singapore, where maids are required to be at least 23 years old.

A MAN hiding in the trunk of a Malaysian-registered car was discovered by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officials as the car tried to exit Singapore at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Thursday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Malaysian driver was trying to help the suspected Chinese overstayer get out of the country.

The 20-year-old driver said he was promised RM500 ($210) if he ferried the passenger out of Singapore.

The driver's sister who was in the car at the time of the offence has also been arrested.

All three are currently under investigation for offences under the Immigration Act.
