Hi Zul,

I graduated from Hwa Chong (8 distinctions), has honours degree from NUS in Engineering, and had 3 years’ experience as a corporate trainer prior to joining MOE as a trainee teacher.

Like your daughter, I also failed my practicum and was asked to pay $130K (i.e. Monthly $2000+ installment payments over roughly 6 years).

The primary school math teacher who supervised me during practicum initially gave me a Pass, then 2 weeks later downgraded that same assessment into a Fail, without giving any reason. Principal also told me being “smart” doesn’t mean I’m fit to teach primary school Math.

I’ve brought evidence of these up to MOE but they’ve brushed it aside. Because of the failed practicum, I ended up jobless for 13 months. At age 40, I was retrenched recently from my job in 2018.

But MOE doesn’t care about all these bread-and-butter issues, and still wants me to cough out $130K. I have a life insurance which was meant for my aged parents in case I were to die prematurely. If MOE pushes me to the brink, the only solution is to end my life so that MOE can get its $130K from my insurer.

Why is there a need to pay $130K? Did the trainee teacher terminated his/her contract? How long had the trainee been through training/course?

Who was/were involved in the observation and assessment during the Practicum? Was any NIE Lecturer present? If not, how competent is the mentoring teacher doing the observation cum assessment? The competency of an assessor performing evaluative assessment during certification/licensing is an issue with a few ministries/licensing agencies. Getting a clerical officer without any domain knowledge or proper training to act as an assessor is complacency and makes a mockery of the whole principle of quality control.

Is the Government short of money? Apparently, this trainee teacher is not the only person having to pay for her bond. Even convicts get a second chance. Is the trainee afford a second chance?

There is no case if it is the trainee teacher who is breaking the bond.

Book-smart or streetwise, many Singaporeans are facing similar situation soleLEE because they don't have another option. In Singapore, the ruLEEng PAP Government LEEtates and the people have to accept and follow. The repayment is likely to be for an unfair teaching bursary.

KNN this sort of things has already happening all the while. many gov bond students in different industries , nursing, engineering etc has paid back in hundreds of thousands to training course fee and allowances paid to them all paid back with interest KNN including pte sector driving instructors made to pay back their course fees, recruitment agencies making candidate to pay penalties for the desperate job seekers KNN this is a sick world business making money from losers who want to make a living KNN
