One midfielder too many: Spain lacking numbers at the back as Del Bosque names Euro 2012 squad

The Salamanca-born coach surprisingly omitted Adrian and Roberto Soldado in his final selection for the continental competition, and included only six natural defenders

Three goalkeepers, four forwards, six defenders and 10 midfielders. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was clearly playing to his strengths as he announced his final squad for Euro 2012 on Sunday, but the selection will cause concern - the list looks light at the back and overcrowded in the middle.

In came Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Pedro from Barcelona, along with Athletic Bilbao duo Fernando Llorente and Javi Martinez, while Chelsea pair Juan Mata and Fernando Torres were also confirmed. Out went Adrian, Benat, Alvaro Dominguez, Isco, Javi Garcia, Nacho Monreal, Roberto Soldado and Bruno Soriano.

Adrian had looked to have done enough to be included after he scored and won a penalty in Spain's 2-0 win over Serbia on Saturday. The Atletico Madrid forward has enjoyed an impressive campaign at the Vicente Calderon and looked certain to make the cut.

In the end, however, Del Bosque dispensed with the former Deportivo La Coruna forward and also left out Soldado, disappointing on Saturday but in fine form for much of the season and a hat-trick hero in his previous game for Spain - a 5-0 win against Venezuela earlier this year.

Pedro's two-goal display in the final of the Copa del Rey on Friday was a timely boost for the Barcelona forward, who had looked set to miss out following an indifferent campaign at Camp Nou. With club colleague David Villa excluded after failing to recover from a broken leg sustained in December, Del Bosque has placed his faith in the recently improved Fernando Torres, along with Alvaro Negredo (poor in his 45 minutes on Saturday but an important individual in the qualifiers) and Llorente for the centre-forward role.

None convince completely, with the Basque forward seemingly unsuited to Spain's style of play, Torres far from the form which saw him shine at Euro 2008 and Negredo a somewhat uninspiring choice.

There are options, however. Cesc, Mata, Silva and even Iniesta can all play in advanced roles, while Del Bosque may decide to opt for a false No.9 at times in Poland and Ukraine.

There had been much meditation, the Spain coach said. Nevertheless, the decision to select only six natural defenders is a big risk. With Barca's courageous captain Carles Puyol sidelined, Sergio Ramos will move alongside Gerard Pique in central defence, with Raul Albiol as back-up.

Alvaro Arbeloa is likely to get the nod on the right as Athletic's Andoni Iraola misses out due to injury problems, but the Real Madrid man has been below his best in recent months. Arbeloa may also be required to cover on the other side if Jordi Alba is injured, with the Valencia defender the only left-back included. Juanfran Torres, meanwhile, is rewarded for his fine campaign at Atletico and makes the final cut.

Del Bosque can call on Javi Martinez, who played most of the season in central defence for Athletic and impressed there, or even Barca's Busquets, if there are injuries in defence. But it remains a risk as Spain look thin on the ground at the back and that is surely the principal problem for La Roja as they seek a third title at international level in successive major tournaments.

Calling up 10 midfielders seems a capricious choice by Del Bosque, who could conceivably have left out Sevilla's Navas or another of his middle men. It may be one too many.

Campbell: England fans could end up coming back from Euro 2012 in a coffin

The former Arsenal defender disagreed with Uefa's claims that the tournament creates opportunities to reduce racism, and believes that Poland & Ukraine should not be hosts

May 28, 2012 10:35:00 AM

By Arthur Virgo

160321hp2.jpg

Former England international Sol Campbell has warned Three Lions fans to stay away fromEuro 2012, claiming that they "could come back in a coffin".

Racist chanting has been previously reported from football fans in the host nations of Poland and Ukraine, while the British government has advised fans of Afro-Caribbean or Asian descent not to travel to avoid racially-motivated attacks.

And the former Arsenal centre-back declared that supporters should simply avoid attending the tournament, telling the BBC: "Stay at home, watch it on TV. Don't even risk it ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin."

Uefa recently insisted that such events can be a catalyst for change in host nations, saying in a statement: "Euro 2012 brings the spotlight on the host countries and clearly creates an opportunity to address and confront such societal issues.

"Uefa's 'zero tolerance' approach to racism is still valid both on and off the pitch and ultimately the referee has the power to stop or abandon a match should racist incidents occur."

However, Campbell disagreed, opining that potential host nations should first make changes in order to win the right to hold a tournament.

"I think that they were wrong," he argued.

“What they should say is that 'if you want this tournament, you sort your problems out. Until we see a massive improvement ... you do not deserve these prestigious tournaments in your country.'"

The families of two England players, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, are reported to be staying away from Euro 2012 for fear of racist attacks.

Smuda announces final Poland squad for Euro 2012

The 63-year-old coach has dropped three players from his provisional panel to complete his final roster for this summer's tournament

Polandboss Franciszek Smuda has announced his final 23-man squad for Euro 2012.

Smuda dropped Tomasz Jodlowiec, Michal Kucharczyk and Kamil Glik in the wake of Saturday's 1-0 friendly win over Slovakia.

"It was really painful to tell three players they will not participate in the finals," explained Smuda at a press conference.

"Saturday was very difficult for me. We played a friendly and I was praying the whole game that none of my players would get injured.

"Then, in the evening, I had a meeting with my assistants, captain Jakub Blaszczykowski and with the three players. I understand they are disappointed, but two months after the Euro finals we start our World Cup qualification campaign, so they can return if they make progress."

Poland kick off their Euro 2012 campaign on June 8 against Greece. They have also been paired with Czech Republic and Russia in Group A.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has cut seven players from his provisional squad for the European Championship ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Luxembourg.

It had been announced by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Monday that Zenit left-back Domenico Criscito would not be travelling to Poland and Ukraine after his room had been searched by police as part of the investigation into the Scommessopoli match-fixing scandal.

Prandelli subsequently confirmed Criscito's defensive colleagues Davide Astori and Salvatore Bocchetti had also been axed, though for football reasons.

Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano has also missed out, with Prandelli electing to pick Morgan De Sanctis and Salvatore Sirigu to provide cover for captain Gianluigi Buffon.

In midfield, Atalanta duo Luca Cigarini and Ezequiel Schelotto have both been cut, as has Pescara starlet Marco Verratti, whose inclusion in the provisional panel had been something of a surprise.

Prandelli has not dropped any strikers, seemingly increasing the likelihood that he will retain all six of the forwards he named in his original 32-man list when he announces his final squad on Tuesday.

Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque has given little importance to the friendly defeats of other teams regarded as favourites for the Euro 2012 title.

A much-changed Germany side suffered a surprise 5-3 defeat against Switzerland, while Netherlands lost 2-1 against Bulgaria, but Del Bosque is refusing to draw conclusions from the warm-up matches.

"I do not give any importance to Germany's defeat or to that of Netherlands," he told RTVE.

"These are just friendlies. What matters starts on June 8 [when the tournament begins]."

Just one day after announcing his final 23-man party for the Euros, Del Bosque confessed that he is thrilled with what he has found so far.

"We are mentally strong but we do not feel superior than anyone," he noted.

"We are delighted with the atmosphere in the group, with all those who are part of the squad, those who made the final group and those who did not.

"We hope it will continue like this because it is key for us to succeed."

The 61-year-old coach then explained the reason he left Barcelona's Thiago out of his squad for the tournament and hinted that continuity played a major role in his squad selection.

"Thiago had been to our liking in recent matches," he added. "But he suffered an injury which requires treatment and rest, and that is why we did not call him into the squad.

"If David Villa and Carles Puyol had not suffered injuries, we would have called up 21 of the 23 players who were at the World Cup."

Spain play Italy to kick off Group C in June 10.

Czech Republic coach Michal Bilek cut goalkeeper Tomas Grigar and rewarded Vladimir Darida with a spot in his final Euro 2012 squad at the expense of Daniel Pudil.

Darida was originally drafted in as emergency cover in case Tomas Rosicky did not recover from injury. But the Czech boss was impressed with the 21-year-old's debut against Israel on Saturday and has decided to include him for the tournament.

Bilek has been able to call upon all his high-profile players including Petr Cech, Tomas Sivok and Milan Baros. There are also eight domestic-based members who have been selected to travel to Poland and Ukraine.

Czech Republic will kick off their Euro 2012 campaign with the Group A match against Russia on June 8. They will then face Greece before their final group game against co-hosts Poland.

The 22-year-old centre-back has failed to prove his fitness after taking a knock to his foot during last month's Coupe de France triumph and will not travel to Poland and Ukraine

Croatia boss Slaven Bilic has been forced to leave defender Dejan Lovren out of his final Euro 2012 squad due to injury.

The Lyon centre-back has failed to recover from a foot problem he sustained in last month's Coupe de France final success over Quevilly.

Lovren is one of four players cut from Bilic's provisional panel, with Hajduk Split goalkeeper Goran Blazevic, Dinamo Zagreb defender Sime Vrsaljko and Dnipro attacker Nikola Kalinic also having been axed.

Croatia play Norway in Oslo on Friday before heading for Poland, where they will kick off their European Championship campaign against Republic of Ireland on June 10.

The Croats, who qualified courtesy of a play-off win over Turkey, also have Italy and Spain for company in Group C.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has cut Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia and Siena striker Mattia Destro from his provisional squad for the European Championship ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Luxembourg.

The national team boss had already dropped seven players on Monday, and has now finalised his roster for Euro 2012.

Serie A champions Juventus have eight players in the Italy squad for this summer's tournament, while runners-up AC Milan are represented by three players. No Inter players have made the final squad following the omission of Ranocchia.

The Azzurri start Euro 2012 with the Group C match against Spain on June 10. They will also have to deal with Croatia and Republic of Ireland in the group stages.

Gourcuff and Yanga-Mbiwa cut from France Euro 2012 squad

The Lyon man will not go to Poland and Ukraine after a disappointing season, while the Montpellier defender is also to miss out

May 29, 2012 10:39:00 AM

By Robin Bairner

184245hp2.jpg

Laurent Blanc has finalised the France squad that will travel to Euro 2012, reducing his numbers to the Uefa-requisite 23 by cutting Yoann Gourcuff and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from his unit.

Initially the France boss had named a total of 27 players in his pre-selection panel, but Olympique de Marseille’s Loic Remy dropped out last week because of a thigh problem sustained at the tail end of the Ligue 1 season along with Tottenham centre-back Younes Kaboul, who is also stricken.

Speculation was rife as to the identities of the other two unfortunate men would be, but Gourcuff was always considered to be a likely player to drop out after a difficult campaign with Olympique Lyonnais.

He was given the chance to impress in Sunday’s 3-2 friendly win over Iceland in Valenciennes, but clearly did not do enough in Blanc’s eyes to justify his selection.

Yanga-Mbiwa, meanwhile, was one of four centre-backs named in the initial squad, but the uncapped Montpellier player will not travel to Ukraine with the rest of the team, with his lack of experience probably a key factor in the coach’s decision making.

France meet Serbia on Thursday and then face Estonia on June 5 as their warm-up matches end. They will meet England, Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine in Group D of the competition proper.

Huntelaar to wear No.9 jersey for Netherlands at Euro 2012

The Oranje have released their list of squad numbers for this summer's showpiece in Poland and Ukraine, with Robin van Persie requesting the No.16 shirt in honour of his son

Netherlands have announced that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will wear the No.9 jersey at Euro 2012, while Robin van Persie has been allocated the No.16 shirt.

However, the Arsenal striker asked specifically to be given his squad number because his son Shaqueel was born on November 16, allowing the Schalke striker to don the much-coveted shirt in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

Huntelaar and Van Persie both started in Netherlands' 2-1 friendly loss to Bulgaria last Saturday, but it appears unlikely that they will be partnered in the Euro 2012 opener against Denmark on June 9.

Elsewhere, Wilfred Bouma has been awarded the No.5 jersey ahead of fellow left-sided defenders Jetro Willems and Stijn Schaars.

The trio are vying for a place in coach Bert van Marwijk's plans at left-back, but it seems that the PSV man may have jumped to the front of the queue.
