When we step into a building, one often marvels at the architecture and design. But we tend to take for granted how seamlessly it runs and how well it is maintained.
Behind the day-to-day building operations is a group of very important but underappreciated people — our facilities management community!
Today, I was at a gathering of this very important community — at the World Workplace Asia Pacific conference. What struck me was that they had built the conference around “workplace” rather than “facilities management”.
In the coming years, we must continue to design and operate our workplaces in a way that is conducive for workers and interactions. Learning from COVID-19 and acting on the climate crisis, we must strive to keep our buildings safe, smart and green. Our facilities management community will have a key role to play.
Next time you step into a building, do remember the people who keep the place running and your lives going!

The lights, doors, escalators, air con and many other facilities in a building are under the care of our facility management community. They work hard behind the scenes to ensure that these facilities are functioning and well-maintained.

HSK launches a book.

In June 2019, I took part in a heritage walk at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). During a briefing by the tour guide, Tan Tock Seng’s great-great grandsons Roney and John jumped in to provide greater historical context on the details. I said to them that they should do a documentary on Tan Tock Seng. Coincidentally, they had already conceived the idea of writing a book on Tan Tock Seng!
Glad that the book — An Illustrious Heritage: The History Of Tan Tock Seng And Family — is now complete. The Tan family invited me to launch it yesterday. Tan Tock Seng is a familiar name to Singaporeans, because the hospital he founded has served countless patients over the years. I was one of them — I will always be grateful for the care provided to me by the doctors, nurses and therapists at the hospital and at the National Neuroscience Institute, when I suffered a stroke in 2016. But beyond the hospital, Tan Tock Seng and his descendants also made many other contributions to our country.
The Singapore Story was written by many of our early pioneers like Tan Tock Seng, who were immigrants that sank deep roots here. For Singapore to continue to thrive, it is critical that we continue to remain open to those who may not be born and bred here, but can contribute to the next chapter of the Singapore Story. I hope that this book serves as an inspiration to the current generation and beyond.

We are looking at a photo of Tan Wi Yan, the great-grandson of Tan Tock Seng. The car that he was photographed in is now displayed at the Toyota Car Museum of Nagoya.

HSK went behind the scenes.

During the pandemic, many more people picked up home baking and cooking. One popular go-to place for their baking needs is Phoon Huat Pte Ltd.
As they offer an ever widening range of products over the years and with home delivery services, fulfilment becomes much more complex.
I went behind the scenes to look at how Phoon Huat transformed their backend to make ordering from them a seamless experience.
They digitalised their logistics, re-engineered their processes, and equipped their workers for a more electronic world.
From traditional supplier to modern distributor – kudos to Phoon Huat, and to Singapore Business Federation for supporting them in their transformation.

Nicholas also championed the digitalisation of the warehouse stocktaking process within his warehousing team, while working closely with Ilmi to ensure that the warehouse digitalisation efforts are synchronised with the firm’s IT systems to achieve seamless material tracking and planning.

HSK is excited about The Singapore Garden Festival.

The Singapore Garden Festival is back in bloom!
The Festival in 2020 was cancelled when COVID-19 hit. But since then many of us have learned to appreciate our green spaces better and even taken up gardening.
I’m very happy that one of my residents, Jean, participated in the Community Garden Edibles Competition for the first time and won the first prize with a white pumpkin that weighs 24 kg! She told me we have many passionate gardeners in East Coast, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!
Many budding florists, local and global landscape designers took part in this year’s Festival. The gardens are all beautiful. One of the gardens I visited even attracted a frog a few days after the garden was set up — nature is full of nice touches!
This is the first time the Garden Festival is held across two locations. So take a stroll along Orchard Road or the Singapore Botanic Gardens. There are exciting events over the next two weeks, so do check it out! https://sgf.nparks.gov.sg/.
Let’s all do our part — to green our estates, grow edibles or help in our community gardens nearby. Together, we can transform Singapore from a Garden City to a City in Nature!
