It’s durian season!
Joined fellow durian lovers at Lucky Heights NC for a Durian and Fruit Fiesta over the weekend. This was our first durian party in two years because of COVID. Great seeing everyone having a good time. Good food (in this case durians) really does bring people together. Hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend!

Those in my generation may remember the Robots book series by Isaac Asimov. In his books, robots were sentient and could perform most of the tasks a human could do, if not more. Isaac Asimov was ahead of his time. Five decades on, we are not quite there yet. But we are getting closer.
I was at the launch of the global HQ of OTSAW today. OTSAW has accumulated 1 million days of robotic operations under its belt – from security, to healthcare, to last mile delivery. It is one promising company in our fledging robotics eco-system.
Today, Singapore has one of the highest robot densities. In the age of Industry 4.0, robots will be even more pervasive in the coming years. There are understandably anxieties that robots will disrupt jobs. But we must learn to make the most of disruptions to create new possibilities, especially as our population ages.
We must learn how to deploy robots in a wider range of increasingly more complex tasks, to augment what we can do uniquely as humans. To succeed, we must continue to invest in R&D and in upskilling our people.

HSK felt the warmth.

Felt the warmth of Bedok residents once again during my walkabouts last weekend! Many had asked if I was feeling better and if I was fully recovered from my bout with COVID — I am, thank you! Spent the afternoon catching up with residents and reminding them to keep safe from not just COVID, but also dengue. Also shared with them about the upcoming GST vouchers in August to help cope with higher inflation. You can visit www.gstvoucher.gov.sg to find out your eligibility for the payouts.
Took the time to drop by a Bedok Conversations session on Lasting Power of Attorney. Glad to see a good turnout for the event. These are important discussions to have and think about, and the Bedok team will continue to organise more of such events on topics that matter to our residents.

Had a nice conversation with Phyllis Gan, who was having lunch with her mother. Phyllis also recently came back from an overseas work trip, so we bonded over how the pandemic has affected travel.

Dropped by our Bedok Conversations on Lasting Power of Attorney, led by lawyer and former MP, Lee Geck Hoon Ellen. An LPA is a legal instrument that allows you to appoint someone to make decisions and act on your behalf should you lose the mental ability to do so yourself. It is a responsible and sensible thing to do for your own peace of mind. Happy to see such a good turnout at the talk!

Spoke to Leng Leng and her cousin Eng Heng after the Bedok Conversations. They were among the many residents who shared good feedback about the session. Glad they found it useful!

Happy to receive a call from Communist Party of China International Department Minister Liu Jianchao today.
This is Minister Liu’s first visit to Singapore since he took up his current appointment and his first overseas trip since COVID-19. Minister Liu and I had an extensive discussion on Singapore-China relations and the strengthening of ties between our people.
We can build on the good momentum in our bilateral engagements, including through the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) — our apex bilateral cooperation platform. I look forward to co-chairing the 18th edition of JCBC with PRC Vice Premier Han Zheng later this year.
I wish Minister Liu a safe flight back to China and welcome him to visit Singapore again in the future!

Happy 90th Anniversary to Xingnan Primary School!
Xingnan was one of the first schools I visited when I became Education Minister — I was the Guest of Honour at their 80th anniversary. That was more than 10 years ago!
I was very happy to be back with advisor Ang Wei Neng 洪维能 to join the students and teachers last night for their 90th anniversary celebrations. Had a great time watching the musical that was lovingly put together by the students and a few alumni, guided by a team of dedicated teachers. They put up an outstanding performance. It showcased the school’s journey and those who had contributed to its growth.
Congratulations on this milestone! The last two years have not been easy for our schools but I’m glad we are in a better place now. My appreciation to our teachers, parents, and the community for supporting our children’s growth and learning.
I wish Xingnan Primary School every success in the years ahead!
