Those in my generation may remember the Robots book series by Isaac Asimov. In his books, robots were sentient and could perform most of the tasks a human could do, if not more. Isaac Asimov was ahead of his time. Five decades on, we are not quite there yet. But we are getting closer.
I was at the launch of the global HQ of
OTSAW today. OTSAW has accumulated 1 million days of robotic operations under its belt – from security, to healthcare, to last mile delivery. It is one promising company in our fledging robotics eco-system.
Today, Singapore has one of the highest robot densities. In the age of Industry 4.0, robots will be even more pervasive in the coming years. There are understandably anxieties that robots will disrupt jobs. But we must learn to make the most of disruptions to create new possibilities, especially as our population ages.
We must learn how to deploy robots in a wider range of increasingly more complex tasks, to augment what we can do uniquely as humans. To succeed, we must continue to invest in R&D and in upskilling our people.
