We are now in the midst of the traditional peak dengue season with over 1,000 weekly cases. It is indeed worrying that the number of dengue cases we have this year has already surpassed the total number of cases for the whole of last year. National Environment Agency (NEA) is expanding Project Wolbachia into more areas, including East Coast. The release of male Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes to earlier sites has proven effective in suppressing the Aedes mosquito population.
But each of us must also do our part to prevent mosquito breeding and stop dengue! You can refer to the BLOCK or SAW steps that I am sharing below. Read more here: go.gov.sg/wolbachia.
Professor Milly Choy shared more on their research work during my visit to Duke-NUS Medical School. She and her team at the Insectary Core Facility are doing important work in studying the different strains of virus transmitted through mosquitoes, including dengue in Aedes. I was also surprised to hear that Prof Milly and her team enjoy dissecting mosquitoes as part of their work!

Shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who was attacked in Nara Prefecture this morning.
I had a warm and constructive call with then Prime Minister Abe back in 2019, when I made a visit to Japan. Mr Abe was the longest serving and one of Japan’s most influential prime ministers, and I remember him as a dedicated and transformative leader.
He was also a long-time friend of Singapore. My deepest condolences to the family of the late Mr Abe and the people of Japan.

With travel resuming, there is a growing buzz in our hotels!
But the hotel industry is not going back to business-as-usual. During the pandemic, many hotels here took the opportunity to transform and invest in new capabilities. During my recent visit to JEN Singapore Tanglin by Shangri-La, I saw some of the innovations that Hotel JEN had adopted to improve productivity, reduce waste, and enhance the overall guest experience. I was also glad to see that they have invested well in the training and upskilling of their staff.
COVID-19 will not be the last curveball we face. But if businesses here invest in innovation and their workers, I am confident that they will not only survive but continue to thrive.
Jena the robot can deliver items to guests within 15 mins of their request. She’s a big help to the staff, especially during the night shift. As more and more companies adopt tech innovations like robots and contactless check-ins to enhance their productivity, these sights will soon be a norm everywhere.
Robots are not just deployed to attend to guests, but also to undertake various back-of-house processes! This Autonomous Mobile Robot can deliver up to 300kg of heavy loads such as linens and other room amenities throughout the hotel.
Some of you may already be familiar with automatic check-in systems at some hotels. This unmanned kiosk actually uses Singapore Tourism Board’s E-Visitor Authentication system which is integrated with Immigration & Checkpoints Authority’s system to automate checks on guests. The room key is dispensed within minutes once the check is done!

Selamat Hari Raya Haji to all our Muslim friends!
Congregants will be taking part in prayers in mosques across Singapore, and some 900 Muslims, including Masagos Zulkifli, are now able to perform the haj this year after a two- year postponement. I wish them a meaningful haj and a safe journey home.
And to our non-Muslim friends, have a good long weekend!

Serving with heart, steadfast in partnership. Singapore Police Force is commemorating its 202nd year. As a former police officer, I am heartened to see that the SPF has strengthened their sense of service to the nation, while safeguarding our way of life over the years.
Since its founding, the SPF has grown in size, equipment and technology. But what is most critical is the dedication of every police officer, and the care they show for our citizens. By working in partnership with the public, our police officers have earned their confidence and trust. Many crimes were prevented or solved with the help of the public.
I am confident that Commissioner of Police Hoong Wee Teck and our men and women in blue will continue serving with heart and remain steadfast in partnership to keep Singapore safe and secure!
Speaking to Aileen Yap (leftmost), who is in the Anti-Scam Command in SPF. She was sharing her experience working on the different scam cases, both offline and digital. Also caught up with Dennis Lim (second from left), Head Operations of Woodlands Division, as well as Low Kay Wee (third from left), from Jurong Division, where I was previously from!
[L-R] Met Jason Tan from SHINE Children and Youth Services; Nur Aisyah, a Victim Care Officer; and Mohammad Haizad, a senior staff nurse in the IMH Crisis Response Team. Glad to hear how they work closely with SPF to aid victims by providing counselling and keeping crime rates low.
It was also nice to know from Helmi Bin Mohamed Eusope (leftmost), who is in the SPF Band, that we are the only band in the world that has pipers who are all female! Saiful (second from left) has been attending courses during the pandemic to pick up new skills, and is part of the Ground Response Force in Clementi NPC. Ng Li Ki (third from left) is part of the organising team for the Annual Police Dinner. Well done!
