During the COVID-19 crisis, the maritime sector persevered, continuing to move goods and essential supplies around the globe, keeping the world economy moving.
Now that the Omicron wave is receding, we had our biggest gathering of global maritime leaders in a long while today at the Singapore Maritime Week. I opened the week-long event this morning with S Iswaran and Chee Hong Tat 徐芳达.
But as one crisis recedes, a new one in Ukraine is clouding the horizon. It is timely for the sector to deal with the challenges and opportunities ahead.
I spoke about focusing on three areas — continuous investment, utilising technology to improve efficiency, and making a decisive green transition.
I also launched the refreshed Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map for 2025 and shared new moves to strengthen global maritime digital connectivity.
As we set sail towards the future, we must work collectively to strengthen this backbone of global trade. Do lookout for the many exciting opportunities that the maritime industry and a seafaring career have to offer!

Maritime Week: DPM Heng Swee Keat bares 3 key areas for maritime transformation

1649167103449.png

DPM Heng Swee Keat bared three key areas where the maritime sector should focus as it journeys to transformation.

In his keynote address at the 2022 Maritime Week, Heng said there’s a need for continuous maritime investment, digitalisation for efficiency, and decisive green transition.

These three, according to Heng, will also help the sector respond to global challenges impacting it.

Meanwhile, Heng also shared how Singapore can continue to grasp new growth opportunities and build on its position as a maritime hub, during a fireside chat with Mr Hor Weng Yew, chairman of the Singapore Maritime Foundation.

HSK was impressed by an 80 year old woman.

A feisty 80-something-years-young East Coast lady left an indelible impression on me last weekend. Age could not dim the sparkle in her eyes as Madam Hoay told me of how she keeps active and makes the most of her days.
She was born before Singapore’s independence. In her lifetime, our society and the role of women in it have evolved so much.
Today, Parliament debated the vision laid out in the Government’s White Paper on Women’s Development for a fairer and more equal society. Josephine Teo and Masagos Zulkifli highlighted some remarkable Singaporean women, and their contributions to our economy and society. Other members raised important points on challenging gender stereotypes, empowering women to take up more leadership roles, and continuing to create diverse opportunities for women.
We must see the progress of women as a journey without end. And take collective action – in our homes, our workplaces, the community and also our relationships – to promote equal partnership between women and men. Together, we can build a Singapore society where everyone, women and men, can be secure and happy, and lead full and inspiring lives.

Community centres continue to be important physical connectors for residents in digital age: Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE - Even as society adopts more digital technology and neighbours communicate more often online, Singapore's community centres will continue to serve as important physical connectors for residents, said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on Saturday (April 2).

He was speaking at the opening of the newly upgraded Fengshan Community Club (CC), which now has an additional 12,000 sq ft of floor area and facilities co-created with residents.

The new facilities include a culinary studio with halal cooking stations and a soundproof dance studio.

Besides Mr Heng, the other advisers to the East Coast GRC grassroots organisations - Miss Cheryl Chan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Maliki Osman, Minister of State Tan Kiat How and Ms Jessica Tan - as well as People's Association deputy chairman Edwin Tong, also attended the event.

Other new and upgraded features at Fengshan CC include a fourth storey that houses several seminar rooms and soundproof music studios. The rooms can be easily reconfigured, and the furniture are mostly movable, so they can be converted to study rooms for students after school.

Mr Heng said community centres - which can be found in every heartland estate - have played important roles in nation-building.

He said that in the digital era, more residents - especially young home owners - have been communicating through WhatsApp message groups and organising interest groups online.

"But, however useful online touchpoints are, they cannot fully replace physical interactions," he added.

Mr Heng noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic, community centres were the main venues for residents to get their vaccinations, and to collect their TraceTogether tokens and antigen rapid test kits.

"Before the pandemic, some residents had never set foot in their community centres. But having now done so, they are keen to explore what their community centres have to offer when Covid-19 recedes," he said.

At the spruced-up Fengshan CC's sheltered outdoor atrium, young people can gather for dance practices while seniors engage in exercises. Digital courses and career advancement talks will be held in seminar rooms and classrooms.

To cater to elderly residents, community partners such as NTUC Health will also house their programmes at the CC.

Miss Chan, who is MP of the Fengshan ward in the East Coast GRC, said: "To me, this CC is not just a building. It's a place where we create shared memories and realise our aspirations together... I hope that residents, volunteers and our community partners can join us to create a CC which they can call their second home."

Did you know that more than 80% of global trade is carried by sea? The critical role of the maritime sector was never more obvious than during this pandemic, as shipping kept the flow of essential goods moving around the world.
But the sector is going through a sea change. Trends such as digitalisation and sustainability will transform the sector. I had a very interesting tour of the MarineTech exhibition at the Singapore Maritime Week yesterday and saw some of the cutting edge innovations being developed.
I was struck by how strong partnerships lie at the core of many of the breakthrough solutions. A Norwegian maritime group and a German MNC started a joint venture in Singapore to provide 3D printing solutions for vessel parts. A group of volunteers from different agencies came together to help SMEs on their digitalisation journey. I also met several start-ups from different parts of the world, making advances in areas such as ensuring the quality of bunker fuel, and digital solutions that enable efficient fleet monitoring. PIER71
™️
, an acceleration programme under MPA and NUS Enterprise, is making good progress in growing this vibrant MarineTech start-up community.
As we ride the waves of change, I believe that the future of the maritime industry has never been more exciting.

This 3D printed propeller took around 38 hours to produce, compared to the usual few weeks. Hakon Elekjaer from the Wilhelmsen Group shared that 3D printing helped solve the non-availability issue of obsolete spare parts faced by some shipping companies.

Speaking to a group of volunteers from different teams across various agencies, who are helping SMEs on their digitalisation journey. Tommy Phun (4th from right) is from a SME that has been in the industry for 60 years. His SME is using data to predict when vessels will break down before they even break down! Having benefited from digitalisation, he hopes that more SMEs can adopt this in their practices.

During my Bedok walkabouts, I’m always on the lookout for whether our heartland merchants and hawkers have signed on to the CDC Vouchers Scheme.
The CDC Vouchers Scheme, which our mayors started in 2020, has helped households tide through the crisis. As inflation becomes an increasing concern, we have brought forward the vouchers for 2022 to mid-May to ease cost of living concerns.
Glad to catch up with 新加坡全国商联总会 The Federation of Merchants' Associations, Singapore - FMAS today, to thank our heartland merchants and hawkers for supporting the scheme. Also wanted to understand how they have adapted to going digital for the vouchers. I am glad that more than 14,500 merchants and hawkers have signed up.
Do continue to support your favourite hawkers and heartland shops!
