The 4G leaders have agreed that Lawrence Wong is the best person to lead us in these challenging and rapidly changing times. I am very glad that he has accepted this responsibility.
Lawrence and I entered politics at the same time, and both of us started at MOE. There, I appreciated his work creating opportunities for our young people as Chairman of the Committee on University Education Pathways Beyond 2015.
Shortly after I went to MOF, I asked Lawrence to join as Second Minister. He was a strong addition to our team, and I enjoyed working closely with him and Indranee on Budgets to support our businesses and people.
When the pandemic hit, I spoke to Lawrence to co-chair a Multi-Ministry Task Force with Gan Kim Yong. Lawrence agreed readily. He was an indispensable pillar in MOF’s work throughout our pandemic Budgets, as well as a calm and thorough leader in our pandemic responses.
I therefore had full confidence in Lawrence when he took my place as Minister for Finance last year. I was impressed when he delivered his maiden Budget this year — it was not an easy Budget to deliver, but he did so with verve, steadiness, and a sense of fairness.
What we need is a next leader who has the well-being of Singaporeans and Singapore at heart, who has the integrity and commitment to serve, and the ability to forge new paths and bring people together.
I believe that Lawrence has these qualities. I have found him to be a leader who considers things carefully, is able to bring people together, and has conviction to do what’s right for Singapore.
As importantly, Lawrence has the runway to eventually succeed PM. We have had a challenging few years. In the coming years, we will need to navigate even more changes that will affect Singaporeans.
Lawrence has a big task ahead of him. He has my whole-hearted support and confidence, as well as the support of his peers. Please give him your whole-hearted support. Remember too that each of us has a role to play in the future of Singapore. Together, we can take Singapore forward!

HSK finds our vibrant multiculturalism very special.

Heng Swee Keat

12 hrs ·
One of the very special things about Singapore is our vibrant multiculturalism. This is reflected in the many diverse festivals and occasions commemorated by our various communities.
Just take this month of April. Our Muslim friends have begun the holy month of Ramadan, the Chinese community has just commemorated Qing Ming, and Christians will also observe Good Friday tomorrow.
Today also marks Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, and Vesakhi, celebrated by the Sikhs. Other Indian communities, including the Telugus, Malayalees and Bengalis, are also celebrating their respective New Years this month.
Good to hear that the Indian Heritage Centre and LiSHA have organised activities, workshops, storytelling sessions and more in the lead up to the new year celebrations. There is also a month-long exhibition on how our Indian communities usher in the new year.
Wishing a happy and blessed new year to our Indian community!

Wishing all our Christian friends a blessed Good Friday!
Pews are now filled, and the choir is back. Two years ago on this day, churches were closed during the Circuit Breaker. I’m glad that our Christian community can come together physically to pray and receive blessings on this very holy day in the Christian calendar.
I hope everyone will continue to exercise social responsibility and stay safe during the long Easter Weekend.

HSK visits Jurong Island.

Heng Swee Keat is with Grace Fu.

It has been some time since I have set foot on Jurong Island!
Today, I was happy to visit Jurong Island again, to open Singapore's fifth desalination plant. The new plant can produce up to 30 million gallons of water daily (that’s equivalent to 55 Olympic-sized swimming pools).
This is another milestone in our journey towards water sustainability. Years of research and investment has made our 4 ‘national taps’ possible — local water catchments, imported water, NEWater, and desalination. This diversification is now all the more critical, with climate change affecting rainfall patterns.
I want to thank all who have contributed to our water journey over the years, many of them working hard behind the scenes — the PUB engineers, scientists and researchers, and our industry partners. There is much more work to be done in the years ahead. Let us all also each do our part to conserve water.
Congratulations!

Touring the desalination plant and looking at how the different systems work together to produce desalinated water. This is the Ultra-Filtration system which removes bacteria and viruses from the water. This highly automated plant also allows for just a three-man team to run the entire plant's operations from the control room!

HSK recalls fondly the good ole' days when he was Education Ministar.

Heng Swee Keat

4 hrs ·
When I was Education Minister, we introduced the Applied Learning Programme and the Learning for Life Programmes in schools to create more opportunities for our students to connect academic knowledge and skills with the real world. This remains an important skill to have in today’s world, where industries are quickly evolving and we all need to be lifelong learners.
I shared this at the recent Bedok Education Merit Awards ceremony with over 200 recipients from primary school to pre-university. It was a joy to be part of this memorable moment with all the proud parents and loved ones. I hope that our students will study well not just to achieve good grades, but to apply their knowledge and use it to make a difference. I also encourage you to get to know other students and parents who were in attendance, since you live in the same neighbourhood.

Congratulations once again to our students (and parents) on this achievement, and thanks to our community volunteers for planning and organising this!

HSK was offered food by residents.

Heng Swee Keat

I have been trying to watch my diet but found it more difficult to do so (in a good way) after yesterday’s house visits at Bedok! As it was dinner time, many residents kindly offered me food like homemade mango pudding and pineapple tarts — thank you for this very sweet gesture!
I really missed meeting my residents face-to-face so I was glad to finally be able to catch up with some residents yesterday. With our COVID-19 situation now under control, we are able to have more interactions with residents, to check in with them and see how they are coping. I look forward to meeting and getting to know more families soon!
