After over two years of battling COVID-19, we have now reached a major milestone. PM Lee Hsien Loong and the MTF shared today that we will be making significant changes to ease our community and border measures.
We could not have done this without the trust and cooperation of everyone. You have abided by the safe management measures, taken your vaccination shots, and stayed resilient through it all. I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our healthcare and frontline workers – we are grateful for your sacrifices, and will continue to support you.
We have made a major step towards living with COVID-19. But we are not yet in the clear, and there could be further twists and turns ahead. Enjoy your social gatherings with your loved ones, but do continue to exercise personal and social responsibility. I am confident that our collective solidarity will see us through this pandemic and beyond.

HSK saw an interesting video.

Saw a video of an intriguing natural phenomenon along our eastern coastlines.
Blue streaks of light were spotted in waves crashing on our beaches. This is caused by a type of marine plankton (which are small microorganisms) known as dinoflagellates. Under certain conditions, they form algal blooms and emit a bright blue light when the cells are being pushed together by waves. Experts say that it is difficult to predict when such algal blooms will form.
This otherworldly sight is also a reminder that we live in a delicate and intricately-linked ecosystem. This ecosystem is now being damaged in profound ways by climate change. The world must start taking urgent action to tackle climate change head-on, and each of us can play our part.
Come tomorrow, WWF-Singapore will be organising its annual Earth Hour. To mark #EarthHour 2022, I encourage everyone to join in by switching off your lights at 8.30pm tomorrow. Beyond turning off your lights, let us all also do more in our daily lives in this collective fight against climate change.

HSK had a dialogue with SRC members.

In 1884, the Singapore Recreation Club set up a pavilion at one end of the Padang. I don’t think its founders could have imagined that, 138 years later, the Club’s members would be looking out on this view.
The SRC was set up to promote sports, but when I joined its members for a dialogue last night, it became clear that they are also keen to contribute to Singapore’s social cohesion, economic resilience, and place in the world. It was invigorating, at this site rich with history and heritage, to have a thoughtful discussion about Singapore’s future and ways to prepare our people for changes ahead.
After our discussion, I went out to look at the Padang, which will be gazetted as a national monument on National Day this year. Looking at the skyscrapers and the National Gallery around it, I thought of how far our economy and society have come. I was also reminded that our future ahead is the green field that we make of it, and it is up to us to seize the opportunities amid change to take Singapore forward.
My thanks to SRC members for the discussion and Zainul Abidin Rasheed for moderating.

Had a wonderful Saturday evening enjoying the music of Beethoven and Mendelssohn, at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Music inspires and connects people across boundaries. So I’m delighted that the German Embassy Singapore started a ‘Beethoven im Garten’ or ‘Beethoven in the Garden’ series.
This year, we have musicians from the renowned Dresden Philharmonic and the Kurt Masur Academy, who spent almost a week rehearsing with students from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. They played beautifully together!
Many thanks to our German friends for sharing this gift of music, and deepening the friendship between our peoples.
We are also happy to welcome back Kah Chun, who travelled home to conduct this! His musical journey is another inspiring story.

A & V are police security officers. They met on the job when they were part of my team, so I’m glad to have been part of their love story and their special day.

This is one of the few weddings I’ve attended since COVID-19 hit. With the easing of SMMs and gathering sizes from 29 March onwards, I hope that we will be able to get together with friends and loved ones on more special days like this.

Today is the first day of the easing of our COVID-19 measures. It’s our most significant one yet since COVID-19 hit our shores.
Glad to see that people have not thrown caution to the wind! Many still had their masks on, even while outdoors. But it was also good to see bigger groups and greater normalcy.
Do continue to exercise social responsibility. We have gotten this far because of all the hard work and sacrifices, but we must be prepared for the next surprise that comes our way. A big thank you to our frontline and healthcare workers as well!
Meanwhile, enjoy the sunshine (and the occasional showers!)

"Follow your dreams"
Singaporean conductor Wong Kahchun reminded me of my advice to him years back when we met. He was studying music in Berlin, and I was then Education Minister.
Kahchun has certainly followed his dream and made it come true. He is now the Chief Conductor of Nuremberg Symphony, and the Principal Guest Conductor for the Japan Philharmonic.
I met Kahchun recently at the Beethoven im Garten concert at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. He flew back to Singapore specially to conduct the concert. Equally admirable is his generosity in sharing his passion and love of music, and nurturing the next generation of musicians.
There are more Singaporeans like Kahchun. Collectively, I hope they can inspire our youths to pursue their passion and follow their dreams.

Tonight marks the start of the holy month of Ramadan for our Muslim community.
With the Omicron wave receding, I’m glad that mosques are able to open up more spaces for congregants. Worshippers are also able to perform their prayers side by side. This is all part of learning to live with endemic COVID. Wishing all our Muslim friends a blessed and fulfilling Ramadan!
Selamat menyambut bulan Ramadan dan selamat berpuasa!

Community centres continue to be important physical connectors for residents in digital age: Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE - Even as society adopts more digital technology and neighbours communicate more often online, Singapore's community centres will continue to serve as important physical connectors for residents, said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on Saturday (April 2).

He was speaking at the opening of the newly upgraded Fengshan Community Club (CC), which now has an additional 12,000 sq ft of floor area and facilities co-created with residents.

The new facilities include a culinary studio with halal cooking stations and a soundproof dance studio.

Besides Mr Heng, the other advisers to the East Coast GRC grassroots organisations - Miss Cheryl Chan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Maliki Osman, Minister of State Tan Kiat How and Ms Jessica Tan - as well as People's Association deputy chairman Edwin Tong, also attended the event.

Other new and upgraded features at Fengshan CC include a fourth storey that houses several seminar rooms and soundproof music studios. The rooms can be easily reconfigured, and the furniture are mostly movable, so they can be converted to study rooms for students after school.

Mr Heng said community centres - which can be found in every heartland estate - have played important roles in nation-building.

He said that in the digital era, more residents - especially young home owners - have been communicating through WhatsApp message groups and organising interest groups online.

"But, however useful online touchpoints are, they cannot fully replace physical interactions," he added.

Mr Heng noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic, community centres were the main venues for residents to get their vaccinations, and to collect their TraceTogether tokens and antigen rapid test kits.

"Before the pandemic, some residents had never set foot in their community centres. But having now done so, they are keen to explore what their community centres have to offer when Covid-19 recedes," he said.

At the spruced-up Fengshan CC's sheltered outdoor atrium, young people can gather for dance practices while seniors engage in exercises. Digital courses and career advancement talks will be held in seminar rooms and classrooms.

To cater to elderly residents, community partners such as NTUC Health will also house their programmes at the CC.

Miss Chan, who is MP of the Fengshan ward in the East Coast GRC, said: "To me, this CC is not just a building. It's a place where we create shared memories and realise our aspirations together... I hope that residents, volunteers and our community partners can join us to create a CC which they can call their second home."

Fengshan Community Club is now open!
I reopened the CC yesterday with Edwin Tong and fellow East Coast advisors, at the invitation of Cheryl Chan 陈慧玲.
Even as we become more digital as a society, and with activities going online as a result of the pandemic, our CCs remain important physical connectors for our people.
One important takeaway from COVID is that there is no substitute for face-to-face interactions. During the pandemic, many of you would have been to a CC at least once — to get your vaccination shots, or to collect your TT token, ART kits or masks. As we ease restrictions, many are looking forward to meeting your neighbours and friends, including at CCs.
Our CCs continue to evolve to meet the needs of residents. The upgrading works have allowed Fengshan CC to refresh its offerings. I had a glimpse of what is to come in my tour of the CC yesterday. I hope you too take some time to explore your CC.
