East Coast is a vibrant place to work in, and is home to many companies.
Together with my teammates, we visited Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) at Changi Business Park today. Some of those who showed us around had been with the company for many years, and had the opportunity to work and train abroad. Others joined more recently, including through our SG United programmes. Very happy to see them push the frontiers of tech to improve lives.
We also took the opportunity to launch the East Coast Vibrant Community Footprints, with the aim of bringing together businesses and creating more opportunities for residents. One initiative under our East Coast Vibrant plan is the SMARTLab@EastCoast led by CapitaLand, which also involves several other companies including R&S.

Whether you’re a student, jobseeker, or a budding entrepreneur, there is something in it for you — from career opportunities, internships, to picking up new skills, and gaining networking opportunities. We also welcome more companies to be part of this initiative! Get updated here: https://go.gov.sg/eastcoastbuzz
A big thank you to R&S for hosting us, and to the partnering companies who joined us today — together, we can make East Coast a more vibrant home for all!

Rohde & Schwarz specialises in Mobile Network testing. Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as drones, it is able to measure the mobile network to stage a well-connected urban environments with its Mobile Network testing solutions.

This is important to ensure that the quality of the Unmanned Traffic Management communication network is reliable in order to have seamless control of the UAVs in the designated areas.

HSK invites you to workshop.

Heng Swee Keat

Gardeners are a special group of people — they love to grow and share, and I don’t mean only plants! Our East Coast Green Action Team is running a 3-months-long composting workshop for residents. We are just a few weeks into the workshop, and already, Bedok resident, May San is sharing what she is learning with her friend, and encouraging others to start composting too. May San loves to share knowledge and nurture her friends’ interests. This is on top of her active participation in our Bougainvillea RC community garden, where she spends time bonding with fellow gardeners while engaging in a hobby they love.
Our East Coast composting workshop is one of several programmes we have been running to support NEA’s Say Yes to Waste Less campaign. It is so nice to see residents empowered to do their part for the environment and to build a greener East Coast together.
If you are interested in East Coast Grows for Good activities, you can sign up at go.gov.sg/ecgfgsignup.

May San (right) sharing what she had learnt from the recent “Compost in a jar” workshop with her friend, Ah Mooi.

I hear from the workshop team that, really, all you need to start composting is a bucket and food scraps. Of course, a nice neighbour like May San will also be a big help.

Compost is probiotics for soil and making living compost is about cultivating beneficial aerobic soil microorganisms by giving them food, water and oxygen.

Every action counts. Glad to see residents doing their part and contributing towards Singapore’s national goal to reduce the amount of waste sent to Semakau Landfill by 30 per cent per capita per day by 2030.

HSK is grateful to healthcare workers.

Heng Swee Keat

13 hrs ·
Our healthcare workers have been at the frontline of the pandemic from day one, and they are still in the thick of it.
In Parliament yesterday, Minister Ong Ye Kung and SMS Janil Puthucheary shared how our healthcare workers have gone way beyond their call of duty to care for their patients. In fact, our healthcare workers bear the disproportionate responsibility as Singapore's last line of defence against COVID-19.
We owe a big debt of gratitude to all the different agencies and sectors involved in this fight, especially to our healthcare workers. Please get vaccinated, get your booster shots, do regular self-testing as we all do our part to keep our community safe.

This Deepavali, let us bring light and hope into the lives of those around us.
The Festival of Lights has once again brightened the streets of Little India. Some of the usual festive activities such as food trails, workshops and heritage tours have also resumed this year as we transition to living with COVID-19.
Let’s continue to keep our spirits up as we celebrate Deepavali with safety measures in check. Enjoy your time with your loved ones and stay safe! Happy Deepavali!

HSK takes photo of Parliament House.

Heng Swee Keat

3 November at 22:41 ·
Took this photo as I left Parliament today, as this is likely the last session in the chamber for the year.
We have had quite a few marathon sessions this year. Because there is so much work to be done, not only to tackle the immediate, but also to lay the foundations for a better future.
This whole year, we have sat in our socially distanced seats in the chamber. We may not be as physically close to each other, but this has not affected the business of Parliament. Many MPs, including first-time MPs, have been participating actively and offering good suggestions and ideas.
Throughout these long sessions, the ever-helpful team at Parliament House has stayed through the nights with us, and kept things running safely and smoothly. My thanks to them for their hard work. Have a good parliamentary break, everyone!

A stargazing and aviation observatory at the site of the old Changi Hospital, a forest trail catered to nature lovers, as well as a gastronomical hub amidst rainforest and coastal landscapes.
These are the winning entries of the “Charmingly Changi” competition organised by Singapore Land Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority. What struck me most was how the proposals were thoughtfully planned to make Changi Point more inclusive, and how the new enhancements took care to preserve the idyllic charm of the area.
My East Coast team and I look forward to working with all stakeholders on these upcoming developments which will make East Coast a more vibrant and greener place for all!

HSK launched the Teochew Festival Singapore.

Heng Swee Keat

1 hr ·
Launched the Teochew Festival Singapore today with Edwin Tong. Organised by 新加坡潮州八邑会馆 Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan and Nam Hwa Opera, the virtual Festival brought back fond memories — I remember watching ‘live’ Teochew opera performances with my grandparents when I was younger. I was also amused by this ‘digital png-kueh’ (a peach-shaped sticky rice cake, or “桃粿” in Chinese) launch mechanism at the Festival.

As a multicultural and racial society, while it is important we each continue to preserve our heritage, we must also appreciate one another’s traditions and expand what we have in common. This is what makes Singapore unique.
I encourage you to explore the Festival at teochew.sg/festival if you have time.

The 新加坡潮州八邑会馆 Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan, along with other local associations, has contributed much to multiculturalism in Singapore. I thank everyone for their contribution in promoting Teochew culture and ensuring that the Chinese culture is passed on to our young ones.

Dropped by Bedok Blk 16 and Bedok CC vaccination centre after our East Coast Advisers meeting yesterday afternoon.
Good to catch up with stallholders and residents who were out and about. Met Cecilia Low who is a volunteer enforcement officer with National Environment Agency (NEA). Her role requires her to be on her feet most of the time — patrolling malls and markets to ensure businesses and patrons adhere to the safe distancing measures. It can be tiring at times but she is happy to contribute. Many of our safe distancing ambassadors and enforcement officers have also been working tirelessly to keep us safe. Thank you Cecilia, her colleagues and fellow volunteers.
Good to see everyone in good spirits despite the drizzly weather! Keep warm and stay safe!

Cecilia Low works in SkillsFuture SG but volunteers as an enforcement officer with National Environment Agency (NEA) on weekends. Her role includes patrolling markets, hawker centres and shopping malls to ensure individuals and businesses adhere to the safe distancing measures. Not an easy job, but an essential one to keep the community safe.
