HSK recommends food vending machines.

Heng Swee Keat

13 hrs ·
Those living around Bedok Bougainvillea RC may have seen these new food vending machines. This is “Food Pantry @ Bedok” — a new initiative that provides 24/7 food assistance to needy families. These food items include canned soup, sugar, and drinks.
We understand some of our seniors who are staying alone and families with disabled members face challenges getting food, especially during the pandemic. So the Bedok team came up with this idea as a way of caring for our vulnerable communities residing in the constituency.
We all can be #FoodHeroes — by making food available and affordable to everyone. If you know anyone in the neighbourhood who requires food assistance, you can refer them to Bedok CC or any Bedok RC Centre. You can also refer to the infographics below for more details.

HSK is concerned about the healthcare system.

Heng Swee Keat

18 mins ·
Our healthcare system remains under pressure. Two-thirds of our ICU beds are already occupied. We are trying to add capacity, but our medical personnel are stretched and fatigued. There is a risk that our healthcare system might be overwhelmed.
This means that we will have to continue with the stabilisation phase for another month. But the MTF will continue to monitor the situation in the coming weeks, and review whether there is scope to ease some of the measures. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance (Singapore) is providing a support package to help affected businesses and workers.
This is a very difficult phase in the fight against COVID-19. If we remain united, we will be able to ride out this wave. There may be more ups and downs, but the situation will eventually be better. I strongly encourage everyone to take good care of yourself and practise social responsibility. Do take your booster shots if you are eligible and limit your social activities where possible during this period.

HSK encourages self-testing.

Heng Swee Keat

12 hrs ·
By now, many of us are familiar with self-testing. It is a key strategy to minimise the spread of the virus, especially to those who are more vulnerable.
The second round of nationwide distribution of ART Kits started today. Each household will receive 10 test kits in their mailboxes from today to 7 December. Schools will also be distributing 10 test kits to each student from 25 Oct.
Let us each do our part to protect our loved ones, and support our healthcare workers.

What if there was a way to get more precise information to arm a patient against cancer, and to make the illness less stressful for the patient?

For cancer patients, one point of intense stress is trying to figure out the right course of action, when so much about cancer is unpredictable. I visited Lucence recently, a precision oncology company that invents ultrasensitive liquid biopsy tests for early screening, diagnosis and serial monitoring. Lucence was spun off from Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in 2016 to solve the most complex diagnostic problems in medicine through innovative technology.

Liquid biopsies require only a single draw of blood, making testing less painful and risky, faster, and cheaper for patients. Results come back within days rather than weeks. This can make a lot of difference for patients with late-stage cancer, who need to find the right targeted treatment quickly.

When we invest in research and development, our hope is always to make the world better, to make life better. A*STAR and Lucence’s work on liquid biopsy tests show this in action. I wish the team all the best as they go on to delivering more advanced cancer diagnostic tests to improve cancer care.

Razer plans to boost S'pore staff count to 1,000 by 2023 to support South-east Asia expansion

1635257716517.png

SINGAPORE - Gaming technology company Razer plans to increase its staff strength here from 600 to about 1,000 by 2023, to give it an edge in businesses it is tapping, such as console gaming, cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence (AI).

On Tuesday (Oct 26), the company's expansion in the region got a lift with the official opening of its $100 million South-east Asia headquarters in the one-north technology and business hub in Buona Vista.

Headquartered in California and co-founded by Singaporean chief executive officer Tan Min-Liang in 2005, Razer is known for its gaming accessories such as mice and keyboards.

But the Hong Kong-listed company has expanded into other products and services, including phones, laptops, tablets, gaming chairs and fintech.

Speaking at the building's opening on Tuesday, Mr Tan said one reason why the company doubled down on investments in Singapore is that the country is home for him.

"And it's not just about building the South-east Asian headquarters (in one-north) - it's looking at investing and building a Singaporean gaming and tech ecosystem... right here," he added.

Citing Razer's success, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who spoke at the new headquarters' opening, encouraged other local firms to venture beyond Singapore.

Mr Heng, who is also Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, noted that North America was Razer's primary market initially but it grew rapidly later.

Now, it has 18 offices and 150 million users globally, with its sights set on expanding in South-east Asia, which DPM Heng said has a growing middle class that has greater consumption power.

As part of Razer's hiring spree, new roles will be created for businesses the company is looking to strengthen - hardware as well as software and services.

For hardware, it is eyeing engineering talent for new growth categories, such as console gaming and gaming chairs.

For services, it is looking to employ people to enlarge its Razer Gold virtual currency offerings, which are used for buying video games and making purchases in games.

The expansion will be in new territories in South-east Asia as well as in Latin America and the Middle East.

The firm is also looking to hire for emerging digital services. These include AI, cryptocurrencies and the Internet of Things, which involves Web-connected devices.

To bolster the growth of e-sports in South-east Asia, Razer's regional headquarters will host workshops and training sessions to support local teams and talent.

The company, which was previously located in Chai Chee, was expected to move to Buona Vista last year. But construction that began in 2019 was delayed after Covid-19 hit last year.

Construction was completed in April this year and Razer moved in in August.

It will occupy three of the building's seven floors and the rest will be rented out. One key tenant is JustCo, which will take up one floor to roll out shared office spaces to technology and gaming companies, including start-ups.

The building, which Razer said is fully powered by renewable energy, has received the Building and Construction Authority's Green Mark GoldPlus certification.

Razer’s journey has been an inspiration for many entrepreneurs. What started as a two-man start up is now a multi-billion dollar tech company.
I was at One-North this evening to launch Razer’s new Southeast Asia Headquarters. Razer is planning to expand its base here to more than 1,000 employees. This new building will house R&D labs, design studios and office space.
Congratulations to Min-Liang Tan and his team at Razer! Their grit and determination has enabled Razer to overcome many challenges, and make an impact on the global gaming scene. As we continue to grow our startup ecosystem, I look forward to nurturing many more startups and stronger partnerships between industry players.

HSK would like to thank all the stroke survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals and members of the public.

Heng Swee Keat

13 hrs ·
I am part of the 3.65 percent of the Singapore population who has had a stroke in the past. Each day, there are 26 new stroke cases in Singapore. With stroke as a leading cause of adult disability today, the work of our healthcare professionals, caregivers, Singapore National Stroke Association (SNSA), Stroke Support Station - S3 and indeed anyone of us in a position to help stroke survivors is invaluable.
Tomorrow is World Stroke Day. I would like to thank all the stroke survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals and members of the public for putting in more than 10,000 hours of physical activities during this stroke month for the “Stepping Out for Stroke'' campaign. Besides keeping yourselves healthy, your participation is a boost for stroke survivors and their families, and helps the SNSA to fund its many helpful programmes that support those affected by stroke.
Do familiarise yourself with the signs of stroke, so that you can help ensure quick action if a situation arises. You can learn more at Singapore National Stroke Association.
