Can you believe this? On tesla?

. There is nothing in Tesla that makes it unique. The battery which is actually the most important tech item is made by Panasonic and LG Chem.
They will now use maxwell batteries. I think Panasonic maybe puling out. Tesla bought maxwell due to some new tech stuffs.

Will Maxwell Technologies enable Tesla to produce better batteries in-house?
This week Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies, the well-known manufacturer of ultracapacitors, which probably tempted the Californian carmaker with its new dry electrode technology for batteries.
The summary of why Tesla might purchase Maxwell was recently released by Sean Mitchell, who listed five main potential reasons:
  • A significant increase in energy density (300 Wh/kg with hope for growth towards 500 Wh/kg in the future)
  • Increase battery life by 2x (and achieve longveility of 1 million miles in a car)
  • 16x production density increase
  • 10-20% cost reduction
  • Puts Tesla in better position to go fully vertical with cell production

Tesla was for years known for its vertical integration and taking whatever possible in-house. For example, they were producing their own AC charging stations and DC fast chargers, as well as on-board chargers and created its own Supercharging network - something that was not seen in the automotive industry. Tesla also decided to go its own way in the case of autonomous driving with its own software and hardware. Even the non-EV related parts like seats were taken in-house.
The vertical integration, especially after the cooling of relationships with Panasonic, who wasn't able to produce batteries at 35 GWh per year at the Gigafactory, sounds reasonable.
The question is now how much Tesla needs to invest to make the new batteries in-house, if that's the case?

once only. after that it can't repeat it. whereas the porsche can do it time and time again.

Well lets see.....you know I never thought how many times ludicrous mode can be launched? So on a reddit thread some claim it can be done 35-50 times on a charge. Can it? Tell you the truth I've never been in a Tesla so dont know,, just that the acceleration times are amazing - but really not practical for the rest of us.

Elon did say something even quicker called "plaid mode" is coming. Whaaaat? Well that is the kind of thing we can expect from this guy. He did put one of his cars in orbit and its currently on the way to........mars? Here is a funny pic from the Australian Police saying the Telsa blew by the speed trap when it passed Australia overhead.

look. I'm a spaceballs fan as well. That's where he gets the ludicrous mode and plaid mode from. I had a serious crush on Daphne Zuniga since then. But if you read C&D's test, the Tesla can't do it. Only for 1 maybe 2 runs. All his stuff has this oversell and underdeliver motif shot through. ok. I will admit that he has lots of toys to keep you entertained like being able to play games and stuff, but dammit, I'm buying a car not a rolling ipad.

Here's the actual data :

edit : oh. I also neglected to mention that I have lots of experience withs cars in 1 way or another for 20+ years. A few years ago, a relative bought a brand new Model S and took me for a ride over in WA. The way the car was put together was shocking. He was trying to impress me with acceleration, but I've been driving all sorts of race cars and drag cars so I was accustomed to it. But I could hear the thumping of the suspension and feel the flexing of the chassis. Purely as a car guy, it's lipstick on a pig. As an entrepreneur though, I envy Musk and his ability to sell to investors and the public.

interesting.

I also note that at the bottom pic it says that model Y may overload capacity. But last I heard, Panasonic was pissed because they didn't buy the amount they promised. There are too many mixed messages coming from this guy.

So tesla can only do it 2 times. No wonder all the videos only have 2 test runs.

So now I know. All those Tesla buyers are suckers, I guess. So how much does one cost in Singapore? 400K? Is that a typo? WOW. Not good. Then I do not understand the hype behind Tesla. Maybe only the 'lets go green crowd"? The things you learn............

China is not your friend

In US a model 3 costs about 40k.

Only stupid sinkies pay 10 times what it costs.

Similarly a Toyota corolla costs less than 20k.

I'll be the first to admit. It has tons of feelgood bits and cool dodads and whatnot. sentry mode, celebration mode, glass roof, games on central screen, autopilot, etc, etc. The gadgets and tech-cool factor is off the scale.

Problem is the car bit of it is not fault tolerant and engineered well. Bumpers falling off in the rain, cars locking occupants in when there is an electrical failure (usually when the car catches on fire ), full self-driving autopilot which fails sometimes, airbags that don't deploy in a crash, unibodies that if hit in a certain way will fail structurally, falcon doors that let water in....

The owners may be suckas, but charitably I'll call them early adopters. Tons of young girls want to ride in a Tesla. At this point, I've seen so many old guys with Teslas giving rides to girls, that it doesn't surprise me anymore. Asked a few 20 something girls and everybody said their 1st choice is a Tesla. Ferrari barely raised their eyebrows.

I don't know what it is. Some tech-savvy or ahead of the curve vibe or something. Maybe like how black lives matter to the whole world suddenly. I call it emperor's new clothes. Hell, even Hyundai and Kia make more well-engineered electric cars than Tesla.

Actually thinking about it, I got the word. Virtue signalling. That's what it is.

400k is overpriced. You were in NJ correct? $3X,000 there now?

I think Jay Leno called it "moral superiority" so that must be it. He does not seem to be a fan of electric cars - that man has a collection! WOW!

I was in Amazing America for 2 years not New Jersey so dunno about prices maybe ask eatnshit guy

In the meantime I have to work for a living I am a slave like this guy

Jay is my hero as far as cars are concerned. He has a dream garage. My personal faves are his Italian cars.

One thing that most people are not aware of is the problem of the added mass from the batteries. Every single electric car I've been in has not been comfortable. The old wisdom was that the greater the mass was, the better the ride is. Obviously not true.

Move back to the US. Can buy any car for a fraction of price in sinkieland. Also better work / life ratio.

Jay Leno's Garage ! Love that Show! I used to watch all the car shows even the old Top Gear with Clarkson and Co. Oh - there was one episode where they tested the old Tesla Roadster and it did not go well. I think the car died or something. Embarassing.

Would love to go back but looks like I'll be in Europe when this is over for a few months. Singapore has its charms but you know there is more out there and if you subscribe to the view that life is short, well..........what are we all doing?

Roadster. I'm not surprised...

Europe? Even better. Love the food, the culture and the people. Work or biz? Can pm me if you wish to keep this conversation private.

Oh me too love how its all jumbled together. Usually my work takes me to Frankfurt or Zurich. Last trip spent time in Belgium and Amsterdam. You know those Belgians have some freaking good beer and Amsterdam was fun for errrr various reasons.

been in one back in 2015 for quite a while. Cousin who works for Microsoft in WA state. Back then it was only Model S. Was prepared to be impressed because I had heard so much about it, but opening the door alone turned me off. Backed out of the driveway, I've already got a good idea. He hunned it and I was impressed by the acceleration for a regular road car but not a performance road car. Then he took me on a winding road and that's when I gave up. Structure flexed like a much cheaper car. NVH was also poorly suppressed. Power delivery from motors were still impressive though.

I've been rightfully accused of being a "traditionalist" in a bad sense of the word. To be fair, I understand that there are many things I don't "get". Like playing games on the screen or the autopilot. But the driving experience is a downer for me.

But I'm also an oddball. Just because I observe one thing, I'll happily accept that someone else has a differing opinion. We don't all have to like the same food.... And I'm spoilt. Being in my shoes, I've driven most any car worth driving for the last 20 years. I'll tell you all about it when I see you.

btw, I rent cars for fun all the time to the point that the local Enterprise is my coffee shop.

ohh.... Belgian beer.... ohhhh..... ohh........ *faints*

Frankfurt and Zurich marks you out to be in banking. Belgium and Amsterdam in the diamond trade. I do like Dutch girls, but not De Wallen. It feels too fish-tanky to me.

I used to think Tesla is way overpriced......but in the past few years since Elon musk have been building new giga factories and ramping up production and fulfilling orders drastically, and preorder sales demand has not faltered at all,and revenues have been skyrocketing......I believe eventually Tesla's real world value might be worth half even 2/3rd of its current market value.

Already it's selling 50,000 cars a quarter.....soon it will reach half a million....then a million.
