In this photo taken Saturday, April 24, 2010, Thailand's embattled Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, left, and Army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Anupong Paochinda are interviewed on the current political situation at a television studio in Bangkok, Thailand. Abhisit acknowledged he initially underestimated the protesters who have occupied central Bangkok for weeks, but he offered no initiatives Sunday to end the country's prolonged, sometimes bloody political crisis.

Red shirt protesters stop police convoy
By South East Asia correspondent Zoe Daniel

Thailand's anti-government Red Shirt protesters have stopped a convoy of police heading to Bangkok to bolster security forces ahead of an expected crackdown.
Red Shirt supporters in Thailand's North East have stopped 178 police being redeployed to Bangkok to increase numbers. Protesters slashed the tyres on the convoy and refused to let it pass.
Earlier today, Thailand's prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva appeared on television warning that security forces will soon move to reclaim the city's shopping district after a sit in that's lasted weeks.
Mr Abhisit said he wants a peaceful solution, but eventually armed forces will act.
The Red Shirts have begun to remove their signature red clothing to avoid arrest.
Skytrain services will be suspended

Anti-government "red-shirt" protesters block a main road leading into Bangkok, about 30km (18 miles) north of the city, April 25, 2010. The "red-shirts" were blocking the road to prevent police vehicles from moving into Bangkok. Anti-government protesters encamped for weeks in central Bangkok promised more aggressive measures after the government rejected their proposals to end increasingly violent protests in return for early polls.

The Redshirts have came too far to turn away now. Their lives are practically worth nothing if their subjugation by their elite masters continue. Abhisit lost a golden chance to recoup his losses when he stanked on the Redshirts softened demand (read here) Another bout of anarchy is anticipated in what could be the mother of all coups in Thailand, anyway.

To understand the Redshirts' passion for Thaksin and their newly opened eyes to the wider world that they count for something instead of being the perennial underclass is that Thaksin had given them so much hope in bettering their lives throughout his rule of 7 years. He successfully uplifted 50% of their living standard and introduced a universal healthcare plan that cost 30 bahts, anywhere, anytime, anythings, any, any, any.....And if you get my drift, why shouldn't they fight for it ?

For too long, there is a social contract between four groups of people in Thailand.

1) the Palace and Amartaya
2) Big business groupings
3) military
4) the Phrai(commoners) consists mainly of rural and urban poor who until recent times obligingly accepted the rules of the other three but now their political dynamics has changed and Thailand is not going to be the same again.

Thailand lower classes have decided not to be docile like their parents' generation and sufficiently enraged enough to take on anyone who stands in their way.

yes, just for one_ this universal health care plan that cost 30 bahts, the bastard dream up to use public fund to buy loyalty from the idiot folks, the scheme nearly caused the collapse of health care system in the country, for years no new hospitals could be built, no new equipment could be bought, the country could not even sent doctors for further training because all the fund had been used to subsidize the 30 baht scheme

Now all the Thais, with brain, hope that the bastard will die a terrible death

RATCHAPRASONG, APRIL 25, 2010: United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters in Bangkok today swapped their trademark red clothing for clothing of many colors ahead of a massive securty crackdown expected to commence in the early hours of Monday morning.

As tens of thousands of democracy supporters flocked to the Ratchaprasong rallying point dressed in normal street wear, large bundles of clothes were delivered to the stage by red-shirt sympathizers for distribution to those with only red clothes.

At the same time tens of thousands of police from all corners of the country were converging on Bangkok, reportedly armed with shotguns, in preparation for what protest leaders have been told will be a massive crackdown commencing around dawn tomorrow morning.

By early evening UDD leaders had received information that a huge force of almost 90,000 police and soldiers had been assembled for a massive final crackdown attempt.

At his evening media briefing core UDD leader Jatuporn Prompan said 214 units of soldiers had been positioned close to the Ratchaprasong intersection in preparation to dispersing the protesters.

Mr. Jatuporn said the government has assembled a massive force of “more than 40,000 soldiers and 44,000 police” to crackdown on the red-shirts, with information indicating the police will be the first wave of security forces to move against the protesters, with the army bringing up the rear.

UDD co-leader Natthawut Saikua told protesters the decision to change out of their distinctive red clothing was based on information that more than 200 Thai soldiers were patrolling Bangkok on motorbikes mimicking the brutal tactics of the Iranian Basji, confronting red-shirt supporters traveling to or from the Ratchaprasong rally site and beating them.

Red shirts 'largest popular political movement' to date in Thailand: seminar

Sun, 25/04/2010 - 21:53

Pravit Rojanaphruk, The Nation

Insisting that red-shirt protesters abide by the principles of non-violence may not be enough to prevent them from "being crushed by the Army", Thammasat University historian Thanet Aphornsuvan warned yesterday.

Thanet, who was speaking at a panel discussion at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand (FCCT) on Thursday night on the topic of "Thailand's Current Political Crisis", said this was because the same method - an appeal for non-violence - had never worked in the past in Thailand.

The Civil Court on Thursday evening issued a temporary injunction against the government from using lethal force outright against protesters after the government earlier threatened to use live rounds. But Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the court's decision was being appealed yesterday.

Thanet, who said the red-shirt movement was a by-product of the September 19, 2006 coup that ousted then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, acknowledged the red shirts were the largest popular political movement Thailand had ever witnessed.

"It's the biggest in Thailand ... What is happening in Thailand is closer to the major revolutions in the world, such as the French Revolution. This is what is going to happen in Thailand," he said.

Thanet said if the red shirts' bid to change Thailand failed, it would be a long time before another such attempt could be mounted again.

Gothom Arya, former 2006 junta-appointed member of the National Legislative Assembly and director of Mahidol University's Research Centre on Peace Building, said the possibility of peace was now in the hands of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"Peace is in his hands. It's up to him to make it, alive or dead," he said, adding half-jokingly that since Abhisit's command of English was virtually perfect, foreign correspondents might be able to prevent further bloodshed by tweeting to the premier in "perfectly good English".

"And maybe he will listen to you."

Gothom, who met with leaders of the red-shirt Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship on Thursday afternoon to promote a compromise five-month House dissolution proposal, said red-shirt leaders were now "more open to negotiations, because they're in a weaker position".

He said each side was keen to win over the other but that emotions were "so high" on both sides that it was hard for them to meet and talk again even in secret.

"They think this war of attrition will provide victory," he said, adding that there was also no "synchronisation of wills" to break the current impasse.

"The conflict has its own dynamic - like opening Pandora's box," he said.

With a perfectly neutral public person not really available in Thailand at the moment, Gothom urged all sides not to think "whoever is not with you is against you", but rather to set up a peace room instead of a war room.

Asked whether he thought the declaration of the state of emergency well ahead of the clashes on April 10 was justified, Gothom said Abhisit had prematurely declared the state of emergency.

"I really don't know what kind of emergency that was. So why the emergency decree?" he said.

Another panellist, Swedish Ambassador Lenmart Linner, said the present crisis was like having three trains rushing at one another, all on the same track at full speed.

"I do still believe there remains room for negotiation, but [the options] are narrowing quickly now," he said, adding that the conflict was complex, with grievances on all sides.

Where are those five men apprehended ?

RATCHAPRASONG, APRIL 25, 2010: The driver of a BTS Skytrain has told police investigating the fatal M79 grenade attack on the Sala Daeng BTS station that he saw rocket propelled grenades fired from the Robinson Department Store building.

The man, Narong Panpetch, was driver of a BTS Skytrain traveling between Sala Daeng and Ratchadamri stations and is said to have told investigators that he saw “flashes come from upper floor windows” of the landmark department store building. A women, whose identity has not been released, is also reported to have told investigators she saw the same thing, just seconds before the grenades struck.

A senior police officer sympathetic to the red-shirt movement has told RedPhanFa2Day that five men were apprehended by police shortly after the deadly bombings that killed one person and injured more than 70 others and taken to the Lumpini Park police station.

The officer, who requested his name and rank not be revealed, was not able to reveal the names of the men detained and was unsure whether they were still being held at the police station or not.

The officer also said police close to Sala Daeng BTS station saw two other men in plain clothes
break through military lines, throw grenades and then disappear back behind the troops in Silom Road at the same time.
He said police who attempted to pursue and apprehend the men were prevented from doing so by the uniformed troops.

The motive is to paint the red-shirts as a violent group and also to stir up trouble between the yellow-shirts and the red-shirts. There is now very strong evidence that the bombers were protected by the army, with a channel 3 TV reporter also reporting to have seen Thai soldiers point guns at Thai police to stop from pursuing the offenders_http://redphanfa2day.wordpress.com/

Today is day 43 of the red-shirts pro-democracy protest against the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the 23 rd day protesters have occupied the Ratchaprasong shopping precinct in the heart of Bangkok.

Red shirt protesters cheer after singing the national anthem April 25, 2010 in Bangkok Thailand. All protesters were told to remove their red clothing to create confusion among the security forces in the midst of a possible attack. Thailand's political crisis plunged back into deadlock after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva rejected a compromise offer from red-shirted demonstrators to end weeks of protests if he dissolved parliament within 30 days and held elections. The Redshirts say they were now braced for a crackdown.
