It will not be healthy for singaporeans if the husband is the prime minister and his wife is the president
It is not healthy based on audit principles. The person who commanded the power should not be a blood or close relative of the person who holds the keys to the treasury.
Not that they will do wrong. Far from it to suggest that.
Rather that there is an opportunity to do wrong. And it is opportunities that audit principles seek to prevent.
If you look around amongst lesser beings, those who gained power of their charity organizations always seek to retain control of the finance committee. Newspaper in the past year had reported on one who invoke his anointing when questioned by the Commissioner of Charities on this. If our leaders disagree with this, all they need to do is to do their own discreet investigations and see if this audit principle makes sense in reality.
But it is perfectly alright if the people themselves elect Ho Ching as President. Then it becomes a situation whereby Singaporeans, knowing that the husband is the Prime Minister, still choose to elect his wife as the President. Then it becomes overwhelmingly the situation where his wife is the best candidate. Not because the President Election Committee says so. But because Singaporeans say so.
Thus perhaps the best way, in a democracy, is for the President Election Committee to propose 3 candidates and let the Singaporean public choose.
