Are u guys ready for ho ching as s'pore president???

It will not be healthy for singaporeans if the husband is the prime minister and his wife is the president

It is not healthy based on audit principles. The person who commanded the power should not be a blood or close relative of the person who holds the keys to the treasury.

Not that they will do wrong. Far from it to suggest that.

Rather that there is an opportunity to do wrong. And it is opportunities that audit principles seek to prevent.

If you look around amongst lesser beings, those who gained power of their charity organizations always seek to retain control of the finance committee. Newspaper in the past year had reported on one who invoke his anointing when questioned by the Commissioner of Charities on this. If our leaders disagree with this, all they need to do is to do their own discreet investigations and see if this audit principle makes sense in reality.

But it is perfectly alright if the people themselves elect Ho Ching as President. Then it becomes a situation whereby Singaporeans, knowing that the husband is the Prime Minister, still choose to elect his wife as the President. Then it becomes overwhelmingly the situation where his wife is the best candidate. Not because the President Election Committee says so. But because Singaporeans say so.

Thus perhaps the best way, in a democracy, is for the President Election Committee to propose 3 candidates and let the Singaporean public choose.

If you look at the list of criteria for presidential candidates, you will find that there are not many people who "qualify". Needless to say, people like Lee Hsien Loong, Ho Ching and Lee Hsien Yang will qualify. Can you think of anyone else? Of course there are some more, but not many more. How many among thise group of "qualified" people really want to be become president?

I remember the last Presidential Election, that finance fella from JTC got blue-blacked when he contested. The PAP government have their own favourite horses. Even Ong Teng Cheong, one time president, NTUC chief with much grassroots labour support, and PAP senior cadre, got a slap from the PAP. Obviously they didnt like it when he got too serious about his role as the gatekeeper of the Singapore Fort Knox.

Which one of the handful of non-PAP people, successful, qualified, able and rich, would want to step forward to contest for presidency, knowing full well the PAP government is going to pull out your every hair, nail and pimple?

criteria are useful in determining who should be in

they are also useful in keeping others out

above all, it must be noted that criteria are artificial constructs, set in place by those in power for whatever reasons they say

oh my buddha.. i still prefer a male.what can she do.,.. more screw up and losses

when is President Nathan's term going to end?

LKY must think he's doing a fine job, doing nothing.

More impt qst is when LKY is going to kick the bucket?

When the old man is gone, many of his puppets will likely be casualties in the in-fighting.

Anybody is fine for me, so long as they'rer not affiliated in any way to the LEE family or Lee Business.

hmm... honestly, if they truly wanted to put Mdm HC as the figure head, need they go thru' all this trouble?

Yes, They need to.

It's to show transparency and National Consensus.

Just to show they're being democratic.

It's a Show. Remember.

Now that's what everyone is asking.

i suspect she is only a puppet at temasek, most of the deals are the old man's ideas.

Don't think so. Heard alot of stories able which indicates otherwise. She is very good at making the old man and old lady happy.

once upon a time, it was finance minister married to headlady of TH. then later become PM+FM married to head lady of TH. then when tongues wagged to much, the finance p-folio given to the thambi...

no surprises if they're gonna pre-qualify her into presidency lor. after all, the governance here is pretty much done run like a pte ltd.

Haiz, just let us vote for one la, that's all i ask for :)
even if we're willing to vote, doesnt mean our prayers would be aswered.... look at the last presidential election. all other fellas disqualified 1 way or another, so left 1 man standing.

Is this the beginning of their GRAND STRATEGY to prep you peasants for HO CHING as next President?

HO CHING has all the paper qualifications to meet their "criteria" which was passed in parliament, inclduing these:

The office of President is now a joke. Anyone can sit on it without stopping life in Singapore. On the other hand, appointing someone to run Temasek will be carried on all newswire, grab the attention of Singaporeans, expats and power brokers around the region. Why in the world would Ho Ching seek a demotion even to pass her retirement age. She would rather be chairman of GIC when that becomes vacant.

I am told being president of Tanglin Club is a better prize and the competition even on non election year is stifling.

this must be a joke.
just look at those few BIG money losing deals that she done over at Temasek Holdings.

like it or not, there's always means n ways to absolve responsibilities over the blunders their kakis make. as it was already so clear in the MS toilet break saga, iron rice bowl means, apologize n the dust will settle. there's always scapegoats down teh food chain that r dispensable.

she has already done enough damage to our reserves.
if she is the president, our reserves will be gone in an instant.

in many republican countries and/or democratic constitutions.... the premier and/or president (head of state) are being nominated, and subsequently elected into office by the ppl. while there's little or no such practice as walkovers.

just take a look at how things r done abroad; in europe, north america, hong kong n even... china.
