A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

Thanks P’ YY for the update. This accident was buried deep among many other traffic accidents that occurred during this time of the year. May the sinkie couple RIP.

Somehow, most Siam Kias felt that this is normal during new year and Songkran after a long history of traffic accidents happening during this time of the year.

To be fair, the mata did implement many rules. One of them was the banning of passengers behind pickup. Due to public pressure, the ban was lifted. But after another accident that happened this morning, think the ban will be enforced again.

Link contains video clip of lorry langah pickup and rear passengers kenna flung out far away. Warning: video might be disturbing for some.

It remains unclear if an 18-year-old girl, who was seen on a Facebook Live post jumping off Bangkok’s Rama 8 Bridge early on Tuesday morning in an apparent suicide attempt after a reported fight with her boyfriend, is dead or alive.

As of 4pm on Tuesday, police still couldn’t find her body.

The woman – later identified as Nitaya, with her last name withheld – was seen on a 2am Facebook Live post which she reportedly paid a man to film for her.

Apparently intoxicated, she is seen singing a song about a break-up. She then climbed to sit on the bridge rail while drinking, then stepped outside the rail and jumped into the Chao Phraya River. The man who was shooting the scene with a smartphone, exclaimed in shock and turned off the Live post.

Footage from a nearby CCTV camera also showed that the girl jumped off the bridge by herself.

Patrolling police responding to a report of attempted suicide found a bottle of alcohol, a phone and the woman’s ID card.

Police said the young woman, who seemed sad and had been crying, hailed motorcycle taxi driver Pataradanai Noomsrinart at Soi Nakniwat 30 to take her to the bridge. She paid him an extra Bt500 to stay with her and shoot the clip.

He told police that Nitaya seemed upset about her love life but didn’t say anything about suicide. He said he saw her fall down and struggle in the water before sinking.

The young woman’s uncle by marriage, who was contacted by police, said Nitaya had left her Ranong home two years ago and the family had no current address for her. All they knew was that she had a boyfriend who worked in the computer field.

555 record was 30 packets of kanom jeen for my ex staff at pattaya south and jomtien during last year Songkran.

Occasionally still tabao for the neighbours, barber, maids, ror por por (security), provision shop old uncle and auntie and two motorcycle taxis. Sometimes for the ladies at the bar. But not everytime due to limited budget.

Chicken Noodle Soup from Mae Sri Ruen. Wanted to makan there but when arrived, found out a company has organized a company new year lunch there and only left a quarter tables. So tabao back as dont like to makan when too noisy. Staff also quite understanding and cook my order first, so no need to wait. Priviledge of being a regular here.

no chilli and pepper, i die. Siam kias like Prik Nam Pla means cutted chilli with fish sauce but I will add some light soya sauce and minced garlic if available.

So mata going to lift the ban on pillion rider having to wear safety helmet ?
Nope. This ban will never be lifted but up to them to enforced. As of today, went to Pattaya, see many people dont wear. But yesterday, saw they stop riders at Naklua.

A little bit about mata administration for those who are confuse about pattaya mata.

There are 4 main mata house in Pattaya and surrounding areas. Locals refer to mata house as “ sor por” or “rong pak”. “Sa ta nee tam ruaj” is official word but locals dont use. In BKK, its call “sor Nor” instead of Sor Por.

Those small police kiosk that can be found in traffic junctions or main roads are call “Pom”.

Back to the mata boundaries in pattaya.
1. Pattaya Mata house - area includes Pattaya North, south, central, pratamnak and half of Jomtien.
2. Banglamung Mata house - Naklua, Nong Yai and Rong Po
3. Nong Prue Mata House - soi siam, soi nern plab waan khao talo and entire dark side.
4. Na Jomtien mata house - half of jomtien (from chaiya preuk onwards) to Baan Ampher, ambassador city.

Mata dont step into each others turf. This rule is followed by all matas. In the past, mata overstepping on each other territories quite rampant and quite big problem for the big dogs.

Nowadays, the boundaries are drawn very clearly among the matas but i doubt the foreigners know about this. Even the locals also half know half dont know.

Bro, What about the tourist police? How they figure in the equation?
And volunteer police? I ever met a laojiao Angmo probably PR or naturalised Thai citizen volunteering as policeman in Pattaya.

Thanks P’Narong for the reminder. Forgot to mention tourist police and volunteers. Tourist Police are actually real police posted from actual police divisons. They do not have any police jurisdiction or territories in any areas. The rank structure and uniforms are the same as regular mata except they wear a blue badge insignia on their sleeves.

For police volunteers, regardless of locals or foreigners, they are not actual police and do not have real police power but many like to behave like real police. Their job is primarily to assist the real mata. For foreign police volunteers, their job mainly to assist in language and communications. The local mata volunteers typically wear navy blue or Khaki color army uniform. The foreign police volunteers wear a white polo shirt ,usually with a sleeveless vest. The police volunteers are known as “ah saa”. Recently, the local police volunteers have many complaints about them abusing their power and even using excessive force on unarmed civilians.

There is also another group that wear very similar dark brown uniform as the mata. They are known as “Te Sa Kit” or city council. This group deals mainly with illegal parking, roadside vendors and side walks and occasionally public areas like beaches and parks.
Many people including locals complained that the uniforms are almost identical and cannot tell the differences. Actually very easy to tell. Mata nco ranks from up to corporal is on sleeve. Sergeant and sergeant major to all commissioned officer, ranks are on the shoulder. Ranks are silver in color for mata.

For Te Sa Kit, the ranks are gold color and machiam saf ampulets. The ranking system is different as they are consider non armed civil servants.

Another group is immigration police. Like the tourist police, They are real mata but only deal with immigration matters. They can only make arrest for immigration offense and nothing else. They wear a small insignia with the words “Immigration” on their sleeves.

Added this:
Actually one more mata group I misses out earlier. Its highway police. They are real police but only deal with highway traffic matters, such as speeding, overweight or overheight, exhaust, illegal modifications.

That is because they stationed at low class place like Walking Street. If they station at the King's Palace, maybe you will look at them in a different light.

555 right. One of my ang moh ex-staff was a mata volunteer at walking street. Run road to Si Saket liaoz.

Edit: Added this,
Location of Pattaya Tourist Police
It is halfway up the Buddha Hill or Pattaya Hill. Big size ang moh with their 110 motorsai might have problem going up the hill as some part of the hill quite steep.
