A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

Okay, Okay....it's called AirCard. I'm going to get one at TRUE, as proposed by Chonburifc.

To reward you, I'm going to post some pics of Thai 'chicks' to get you hot again....hehe..

Wow thanks buddy, these chicks legs damn long sexy sexy

I see it's different for each country. In sg these broadband sim cards can only send a limited number of sms and no phone calls with a number of data plans. One plan is 3 days unlimited for 18 bucks or 9 hours at different times.

I have one sim card from ais and i need to subsribe for 50 bhat everyday for unlimited if i enable 3G service if not it's 1 bhat per min. If you forget about it you'll find all your alot of credit gone at the end of the day.

So they don't have a specific data sim cards like sg? If you use the broadband modem you won't be able to make phone calls from it.
Right, the prepaid SIM cards are all 3G ready. Which means they can be use for both data and voice. Have been using an AIS sim card on my Samsung phone. It does not display any 3G or 3G+. The moment I call the call centre (1175) to activate it, the 3G logo appears on the phone after I reboot. Occasionally, I use this SIM card on my Aircard and it works.

Bro Rotikosong is right on the part which unlimited volume and time comes with certain condition. After certain volume or time of usage, the speed is reduced to EDGE speed which is around 254K. I am currently using monthly unlimited AIS at THB 799.

Bro, what is the difference between 3G vs EDGE and GPRS ? Is 3G necessary at all ?
Think EDGE is 2G or less. The maximum speed is about 250K. Think GPRS is even slower than EDGE. They are offering such package because in areas where 3G is not available, it will be switch to EDGE and GPRS network. On an AIRCARD, you can tell whether you are on 3G or EDGE just by looking at the LED light on the aircard or the software.

OK, to be honest, I don't need 3G as I only use it for surfing the net, checking stock price, check football 'plate' and answering email. :) GF is using postpaid 3G unlimited as she needs to send and receive large files.

I happen to use all 3 service provider (AIS, DTAC and TRUE) and have an Aircardin both my office to be use as backup when the ADSL line is down. Come to Sin City and you can evaluate the Aircards (ZTE, AIS Huawei and Prolink) as well as the Service providers. :D

3G's not available in some ulu places, even north in Lampang (100kms from CNX). Like you, I get by with essentials like connected to emails (work and private) and ...sbf. :p But EDGE do drop off, even in CNX. So depends on one's actual needs. As I mentioned before, volume based AIS allows free standby. If time based, eats into your credit (if not switched off, as I learnt hard way when zzz).

Bro, if you read the ads, it says top up 50 baht and enjoy 30-day validity period. Does that mean it's 50 baht for the first 15 hours ? If so, it's really cheap. Cheaper than donkey years ago when I paid Singtel S$30 plus for 33.6 kbps connection.

Noooo. It means if your existing credit is about the expire, you can top up THB 50 to extend the expiry date to another 30 days. For example, if you opt for 15 hours per mth and you did not use all of them. Say you only use 2 hours and so you have another 13 hours but your SIM card is expiring soon. So by topping up THB 50, you extend another 30 days to have enough time to use the remaining balance. This is what it means.

Same same here. That's why I will go for unlimited whenever possible and price is reasonable. As for internet, sometimes, I fall asleep without powering down the computer especially after a few Changs.

Believe it or not? My first experience with modem was a Hayes 1200 bps smart modem. And there was no internet at that time, only text BBS.

Dinner for tonight is Khao Mor Gai (Nasi Briyani). It's THB 40. And it's delicious. I am sure you can get this cheaper elsewhere.

OK, I got mine for THB 1200 (7.2 Mbps AIS aircard + sim + 30 hour). Available in most AIS/Telewiz or Ah Beng mobile phone shops. Subsequent months, I just top up THB 800 every month for unlimited usage.

In a nutshell, you buy a Aircard with Sim and 30 hours usage. Subsequently, just top up according to your needs. At the end of the 15 hours, they will automatically deduct your credits if you have sufficient credits for the next 15 hours. Looking at the website, think they don't have 15 hours package but they do have 20 hours@THB 100. http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/internet-package/

I thought you just condemned AIS ? You were the one who recommended me True.

Bo Bian ley. The Aircard package with AIS so continue to use AIS. For TRUE, only found out the fast speed when I bought ipad. It's the shop that recommend me to use TRUE for ipad. So far, no complain. You can watch youtube video without any delay or lag.

Wow this is good. Sg prepaid voice sim cards don't have this feature i think and if you want it lord knows how much you have to pay. It's like 18 bucks for 3 continous days of unlimited broadband usage only for broadband sims. So that's pretty expensive if you need to use prepaid broadband for a long period of time in sg. On top of that i believe starhub and singtel cap the speed of their networks so you are not near the max speed of 7.2mbps which is around 800-900 kbps d/l speed.

Also you need to register with your ic whenever you buy a broadband sim cos they cannot allow anaymous ppl posting inflammtory things on the net which makes it even worse cos you cannot buy it from some convinence stores even if they sell these cards. I ever tried to buy one prepaid broadband sim for a fren at one 7-11 store and the stupid ah neh clerk told me the person in charge of it isn't around or some shit excuse like that i'm sure it's cos he doesn't know how to register the cards.

KYP, still trying to locate the pics of the satellite/set top box I installed in Surin. According to my partner, it is legal and we paid less than THB 4,000 for the satellite and set-top box, installation plus 1 year of 'update'. Don't have to paid anything else unless I want to 'update' my set-top box. Update means add more channels.

Channels available is all Thai channels plus private stations (30 channels), all LAOS station, All Cambodia channels and many Vietnamese channel (more than 10), China (1 channel only, think it's CCTV 10) and ROC (Not sure which channel but not Zhong Tian), Russian Channels (5-6), Middle East/India (5-6 channels). The rest are News (BBC, Bloomberg etc) ,MTV, fashion, religious and some science/greography channel. I recall it's the Vietnamese channel that have live EPL but the commentator is Vietnamese. In total, I have 300 channels which is the limit of the set top box.

(added this) OK, finally found it on my old notebook.

And this is the set-top box.

Alamak, the pics remind me I have to make a trip back in Surin soon.
