The former Tottenham boss is confirmed as Mark Hughes' successor at the west London club on a two-and-a-half-year contract, needing to lift the winless Rs off the bottom
Nov 24, 2012 10:50:00 AM
QPR have confirmed the appointment of Harry Redknapp as manager on a two-and-a-half year deal, taking the vacant position following Mark Hughes' dismissal on Friday morning.
The Rs moved quickly to get their man, having begun talks with the former Tottenham boss on the same day as firing the Welshman. The 65-year-old will watch Saturday's game against Manchester United from the stands before taking charge on Monday.
"I'm delighted to be back in the managerial hotseat at QPR. I can't wait to get started," Redknapp told the club's official website.
"When I spoke to the shareholders and they told me about their plans I knew this was too good an opportunity to turn down.
"There's no doubt there's a lot of ability in the squad but, for one reason or another, things haven't gone as well as everyone expected since the start of the season. I can't wait to get to work and get the results necessary to kick-start our season."
The Rs are still searching for their first win of the season, with only four points from their first 12 league games, but Redknapp has experience in turning clubs around, with the Englishman establishing Tottenham as a top-four team after taking over in 2008 when the club had two points from eight matches.
QPR chairman Tony Fernandes declared: "Harry was our No.1 target, the unanimous choice of the board, and we're delighted we've been able to attract him to the club.
"He has a proven track record in the Premier League and has all the characteristics we were looking for to get us out of the current situation we find ourselves in.
"His man-management skills are second to none and we are confident he is the right man to lead us away from the bottom of the table.
"We believe we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives."
QPR shareholder Kamarudin Bin Meranun added: "While we look forward with Harry we would also like to place on the record our appreciation to Mark."

Rafael Benitez's reign at Chelsea got off to a negative start ahead of Sunday's clash with Manchester City, with the new manager being booed by the crowd at Stamford Bridge before a ball had even been kicked.
The former Liverpool boss replaced Roberto Di Matteo at the helm this week after the Italian was dismissed after a run of just two wins in eight, but his arrival in west London was met with dismay by many Blues fans.
Benitez had a fractious relationship with Chelsea when his Liverpool team sparred with the Stamford Bridge club in the Champions League, and it appears the supporters of the London club are not willing to forget.
Chelsea fans also offered a tribute to their former player and manager Di Matteo with a round of applause and chanting throughout the 16th minute of the game - the Italian wore that shirt during his four years as a player at the club.

The Reds boss has revealed the club have a transfer kitty for the upcoming transfer window and are hoping to bring "one or two" loan players in to boost their squad size

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the club has "a bit of money to spend" in the January transfer window and he is hoping to bring in "one or two" players on loan.
However, Rodgers has conceded that are not many names under consideration, he is hoping to boost his “reinforce” his squad.
Rodgers told talkSPORT: "The squad has been ultra-thin right the way through. There will be some money available.
"There have been a million names linked to the club and the brutal honesty of it is that ninety nine per cent of those we haven’t been thinking about.
"But there will be a bit of money to spend and hopefully we can get one or two loans in, if that’s possible, to reinforce the group."
The 39-year-old also believes his side are heading in the right direction after extending their unbeaten Premier League run to eight games with the 0-0 draw against Swansea City on Sunday.
He added: "I think we are on the up and improving all the time.
"It was obviously very difficult at the beginning with tough games and trying to implement new ideas. It’s difficult when you are playing against some of the big sides and established sides.
"The application of the players has been outstanding. They have been superb in terms of wanting to learn, wanting to improve and wanting to work."
The ex-Liverpool boss endured a frosty reception from his new club’s supporters during his first game in charge on Sunday, but is keen to show he was the right choice to take over

Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez has refused to issue an apology to the club’s supporters for comments he made during his time in charge of Liverpool.
The Spaniard was booed by a section of Blues fans during his first game in charge against Manchester City on Sunday, with some holding up banners venting their frustrations at his appointment and Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking.
While in charge of Liverpool, Benitez - who insisted he would never work for the Stamford Bridge side - made negative remarks about Chelsea supporters and the club’s decision to hand out 'plastic flags'.
And when quizzed if he was prepared to apologise for his previous remarks, Benitez responded by telling reporters: "The problem is that we cannot analyse what I did or did not say.
"We cannot really check. I will show them that I can try my best."
The 52-year-old likened his situation to that of a new player arriving at a club, and said he is keen to focus on improving his new squad and starting to win matches again.
He added: "Imagine that you have a player that has no support from fans. What I will tell him is, 'Listen, stay focused work for your club, don't be distracted, concentrate on football.' I understand. I know about the fans.
"But at the same time I will try to prove that I am here for the right reasons, that I am here to win. I will concentrate on my coaching, to improve players, and to win."

Manchester City and Liverpool paid more money to agents between 1 October 2011 and 30 September 2012 than any other Premier League club, an official statement has revealed.
The publication of teams' expenditure on player agent fees has shown that a total of £77,003,130 was spent during the 12-month period by top flight clubs.
Out of the 806 transactions made during the period, City were the highest spenders on agents, accumulating a total expenditure of £10,537,982.
Liverpool spent the second most of any side with £8,600,444, whilst QPR, Tottenham and Chelsea respectively followed in the region of £6.5m - with Arsenal next in line with £5.5m
However, Manchester United were one of the lower spending clubs, with a total of £3,681,580, despite their capacity to spend on transfers. Southampton ranked lowest with just £646,106 spent.
The figures were released following an agreement in June 2008 that clubs would publish their total expenditure on player agents from the 2009-10 season onwards.

Allardyce defends Abramovich's decision to sack Roberto Di Matteo
The West Ham United manager has defended Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich suggesting he is entitled to do as he pleases considering the investment he has put into the club
Dec 3, 2012 5:20:00 PM
By Matt Hill
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has defended Roman Abramovich following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo.
The 58-year-old manager believes that because Abramovich is pumping money into the club he should be allowed to do as he pleases.
The decision to remove Di Matteo and replace him with Rafael Benitez has been an unpopular one at Stamford Bridge leading the visiting Chelsea fans at Upton Park on Saturday to chant, "Roman Abramovich, is this what you want?" As the Hammers went 3-1 up against the European champions.
"Roman is the owner of Chelsea Football Club and he's entitled to do whatever he wants because of the amount of money he puts behind the team.” Allardyce told reporters.
"He's been a great advocate for why the Premier League has become such a great brand around the world of football, by the money he's put in.
"What he wants, you have to deal with if you're the manager. And you have to deliver."
Chelsea are expecting Frank Lampard and John Terry to return to training this week following injuries and Allardyce believes their absence has hit the Blues hard, but that they still should have the quality to get results without them.
"I think they're missing John Terry. I think they're missing leadership,” he added, before saying. "Look at the amount of money they've spent on the players and you can see the quality they've got.”
After taking the lead in the first half, Chelsea squandered opportunities to close the game out in the second with Fernando Torres in particular missing a couple of golden chances. West Ham were able to control the game thanks to the introduction of Mohamed Diame and Allardyce felt Chelsea were below par.
"In the second half, they didn't quite show as much resilience as they needed to, to overcome what we were doing. They couldn't change the way they played to cope with us. We changed the way we played to cope with them and expose them. They couldn't do that against us in the second half."
Klopp: I am not afraid to lose Lewandowski to Manchester United
Ahead of the clash with Manchester City in Group D, the German coach has fired a warning to potential suitors from England, saying he is unfazed by interest shown in his forward

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp believes that highly sought-after striker Robert Lewandowski will remain at the club for the foreseeable future.
The top teams in the Premier League have been linked with the player, who's contract runs out in the summer of 2014, but the trainer insists they have nothing to fear if bids do come in for their star man.
"I am not afraid to lose him," he told reporters.
"Manchester United is one of many clubs that are going to be showing an interest in him. But the fact remains the contract is with us.
"The time when there were big, rich English clubs coming to lure German players away - thank God those times are over.
"No, I'm not afraid I'll be losing him and in the second half of the season he'll be with us."
BVB face Manchester City on Tuesday and Klopp hailed the performance of his team the last time the two sides met back in October saying that it was, "one of the best games ever played by any BVB team."
Although Dortmund will have to do without the services of Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl, and are already guaranteed a place in the last 16, the German coach did not share any exact plans regarding the line-up for the encounter.
He added: "The Champions League is still a very appealing competition. We want to live up to that despite the personnel issues [we have].
"At the moment, I cannot give any details on how we will appear tomorrow. We will tinker [with the] team and then get started. We want to present a starting XI that is as fresh as possible."
Wenger ready to make Huntelaar top of his Klaas with Henry, Zaha and Reina set to follow as Arsenal boss bids to save season
By SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 21:55 GMT, 3 December 2012 | UPDATED: 21:55 GMT, 3 December 2012
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to sign Schalke goalscorer Klass-Jan Huntelaar next month and he could be available for a cut-price £6million. The Holland international has been watched extensively by Arsenal scouts during the opening weeks of the season. Manager Wenger is a long-term admirer of the 29-year-old striker and has tried to sign Huntelaar in the past.
Different Klass: Wenger is an admirer of the Schalke forward and is plotting a £6m move in January
The Frenchman has received glowing feedback from his European network of spies regarding the former Real Madrid striker. And after discussions with influential chief scout Steve Rowley, the Arsenal manager has made a firm decision to make an offer for the centre forward when the transfer window reopens. Wenger has been told there are substantial funds to spend on signings and a portion of the kitty has already been assigned to the Huntelaar move. Huntelaar's current deal expires at the end of the season.
Targets: Thierry Henry could sign for the north London club for a third time while Wenger is tracking Zaha
But Wenger will not be the only manager in the mix for the big forward, with Liverpool and Tottenham both continuing to be kept updated on his future. Schalke are still trying to tie Huntelaar down on fresh terms, while it has also been suggested that he could look for a lucrative free transfer at the end of the season. The German club are understood to be aware of Arsenal's interest in their star striker, who has scored two Champions League goals against the Gunners this season.
Interest: Reina is thought to be Wenger's first choice
Wenger will also look to tie up a loan deal for Thierry Henry and make a £9m starting bid for Crystal Palace wonder kid Wilfried Zaha. The club are also in the market for a new goalkeeper, with Liverpool's Pepe Reina thought to be Wenger's first choice.
