EXCLUSIVE: Valencia on crutches as Vidic is ruled out for two months
By CHRIS WHEELER PUBLISHED: 21:30 GMT, 25 September 2012 | UPDATED: 21:58 GMT, 25 September 2012
Manchester United have been dealt another blow after captain Nemanja Vidic was ruled out for eight weeks following a knee operation as Antonio Valencia left the club’s Carrington training ground on crutches.Valencia’s right foot is in a protective boot while United’s medical staff continue to assess the injury he suffered in Sunday’s victory at Liverpool. The winger is understood to have been hurt winning the penalty which decided the game at Anfield, even though Liverpool’s Glen Johnson accused him of diving.
Nightmare: Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out until the end of November
KEY MAN VIDIC
Without Nemanja Vidic, United’s win percentage in the Premier League drops by nearly 10 per cent. They have won 74 per cent with their captain and 65 per cent without him. They are also 30 per cent more likely to concede a goal in a game.
The loss of Vidic leaves United with only two first-choice centre-halves in Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones recovering from surgery. It will also raise questions over the condition of Vidic’s right knee, as it is the same joint the 30-year-old injured in a Champions League tie with Basel last December, keeping him out for nine months.Sportsmail revealed then that the severity of Vidic’s injury — he damaged medial and lateral ligaments as well as rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament — was rare. It appears that the Serb has suffered complications five games into his comeback.
Blow: Antonio Valencia (centre) left United's training ground on crutches
A club statement read: ‘Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks. Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem.’Vidic, will now miss four of United’s five remaining Champions League group games and at least eight Premier League fixtures. Ferguson will have Smalling and Jones back in the next six weeks but for now must rely on Evans — who has played three United games since foot surgery — while ensuring he does not put too much strain on Ferdinand’s long-standing back problem. The 32-year-old is set to be rested for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup tie against Newcastle at Old Trafford.Darren Fletcher will make his first senior start in 10 months and Wayne Rooney is back in contention.
Big job: Rio Ferdinand (centre) will have a new partner in central defence
I wish managers would just shut up! Mancini hits out after spat with Lambert
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 22:45 GMT, 25 September 2012 | UPDATED: 22:45 GMT, 25 September 2012
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini believes his touchline row with Aston Villa counterpart Paul Lambert is typical of the attitude many opposition managers have towards him.The pair exchanged heated words in the second half of City's 4-2 Capital One Cup defeat at the Etihad Stadium after the Italian complained to the fourth official about a tackle by Joe Bennett on Gareth Barry.'I am tired with these managers,' said Mancini, who has had his fair share of touchline confrontations during his time in England.
Spat: Roberto Mancini had a touchline row with his opposite number Paul Lambert
'I didn't say nothing to him (Lambert). There are some managers it is better to shut up.'I asked only if there was a yellow card - without moving my hands (Mancini has been guilty in the past of waving imaginary cards) - with the fourth official and he comes over to me.'I didn't speak with him. I asked the fourth official if it was a yellow card because I thought the referee had forgotten his yellow cards in the dressing room.'I don't know what is the reason. I can understand if I was talking to him but I didn't say nothing.'Mancini added: 'I am very tired with their behaviour. Sometimes these managers go to the big stadiums and the other manager says everything and they say nothing.
Come on then! Lambert approaches Mancini as his Aston Villa side come from behind to beat Manchester City
'When they go to [Old] Trafford, they say nothing. When other managers talk about the referee they always sit on the bench.'I don't like this type of behaviour.'Lambert brushed aside Mancini's complaints, saying: 'If that's what he said then fine.'I respect him as a manager and an ex-player.'It wasn't really a spat. It was nothing.'Mancini may well have been trying to deflect attention from his side's third-round exit, having reached the semi-finals in two of the last three seasons.
Knocked out: City's poor start to the season continued as Villa beat them in extra time
Despite making 10 changes from Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, the City boss was still able to field a team with combined value well over £150million, even with teenagers Abdul Razak and Denis Suarez in the line-up. However, they twice threw away leads given to them by Mario Balotelli and then Aleksandar Kolarov after Villa old boy Gareth Barry's own goal had made it 1-1. Gabriel Agbonlahor took the tie to extra time and added a second after Charles N'Zogbia had put Villa ahead for the first time.'It was a difficult match because Aston Villa were a good team,' added Mancini.
Game over: Gabriel Agbonlahor seals Aston Villa's win with his second goal of the game
'We didn't play well and we had some unlucky moments but I think they deserved to go through.'Lambert, in his first season at Villa Park having taken over in the summer, was delighted with the performance.'It is a massive result for us. I thought the way we played was excellent,' he added.'It was a brilliant response from the team. It was a huge effort.'We didn't deserve to go a goal behind but we showed real character to come back.'

Martinez charged by FA for comments after Manchester United defeat
The 39-year-old Latics manager lambasted the referee's display during a recent game between the two sides at Old Trafford and has been charged with bringing the game into disrepute
Sep 26, 2012 1:35:00 PM
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has been charged by the Football Association for comments he made to the media after his side’s defeat at Manchester United on September 15.
The charge relates to an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 concerning media comments which imply that the match officials are motivated by bias or have brought the game into disrepute.
Martinez was unhappy with the performance of referee Michael Oliver during his club's 4-0 defeat away at Old Trafford on September 15 and he did not hold back with his criticism after the game.
"We want to come to places like this and get results like we did at other big venues last season, but you know it's going to be a tough ask when decisions start to go against you as early as the fourth minute," Martinez told the club's official website.
"Welbeck should also have received a straight red card for his challenge on Franco [Di Santo] at the end of the game.
"You need mentally strong referees to make these decisions regardless of their surroundings and the teams playing, but unfortunately I thought the game was too big for the referee."
The Latics boss now has until 4pm on Thursday 27 September to respond to the charges made against him.
Sir Alex Ferguson finalising Manchester United succession plan headed by Guardiola and Mourinho
The 70-year-old will have the biggest say in the identity of his successor and has identified only two potential candidates for the Old Trafford hot-seat
Sep 26, 2012 7:00:00 AM
SPECIAL REPORT By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent
As he collected another three points on a day he was embroiled in a controversy with a player 50 years his junior on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson’s fire looked at Liverpool like it was burning as strong as ever.
Yet away from the pitch, the Scot's focus is no longer fixed solely on leading Manchester United back to the summit of the Premier League or snaring a third European crown of his reign - but also on putting in place a cast-iron succession plan that will see the club succeed long after he decides to call it a day.
With whispers growing within Manchester United’s corridors of power that the flames could finally be ready to flicker on one of the greatest managerial dynasties of all, Ferguson is actively drawing up a precise succession plan to ensure a smooth transition when he retires as manager.
Already, he is in constant contact with chief executive David Gill, who is in control of the day-to-day running of the club, as well as being involved in regular conference calls with the US-based owners the Glazers as he finalises plans.
And the key to both the Old Trafford legend's succession plan and the timing of his retirement from management lie in part at least at the feet of the only two managers Ferguson himself considers serious candidates to succeed him; Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
Any appointment will have to be ratified by the board and Gill but, on both sides of the Atlantic, they are comfortable with Ferguson having the biggest say in the identity of the man who takes his seat in the dugout and when he comes to sit in it.
THE VIEW FROM SPAIN
'UNITED, NOT CHELSEA, WOULD SUIT PEP'
At the moment, Guardiola doesn't feel like returning to the game. He has said so a number of times. In fact, he repeats it as if it were a mantra. However, in the not-so-short term, Manchester United would absolutely be a club that would appeal to him. The Red Devils are a well respected side, that favour long-term projects and leave the whole sporting business to the manager, instead of having a hands-on owner that wants to take every decision - such as, for example, Chelsea, another club who greatly admire the Catalan. For that reason alone, the United job is one that would appeal to Guardiola far more than that of Chelsea. The Blues just do not feel like a good fit for a coach that feels much more at ease with a tradition-laden institution which values and good football are valued at the same level as triumphs on the pitch. Either way, next summer will be key. Guardiola will return to football at that point and will do so, no doubt, with a big club on a long-term contract. Any club hoping to take on the now 41-year-old will have to move swiftly in 2013. Martin Langer | Goal.com Spain

The Scot, who turns 71 in December, wants to keep his plans shrouded in secracy to avoid a repeat of the situation in 2001-2002 when he felt the team were destabilised after he announced his intention to retire at the end of that campaign, only to later change his mind.
However, the most successful manager in the history of British football is well aware of how crucial the timing of his departure will be in terms of United identifying a successor.
When he goes, be it next summer or in three years’ time, Ferguson intends to leave the club in immaculate shape.
“The succession plan is a delicate situation because of the club's need to continue delivering success on the pitch, and how any such change would impact their share price and wider perception as a club geared up for future success,” a source toldGoalcom. “Gill doesn't feel it is pertinent to bring up the issue because he has been assured he will one day get the ‘phone call' from Sir Alex.
“He will go when he wants, and probably with zero warning. Sir Alex will also have the biggest say in his successor - the casting vote, if you like.”
Gill has said that the club will seek an experienced candidate whenever the time comes to make their first managerial appointment since November 1986 and Ferguson is of the conviction that the Old Trafford dugout can only be occupied by a select few who have taken an elite club to the heights.
He is among the many admirers of David Moyes, who has worked wonders on a shoestring budget during the last decade at Everton, but the lack of European success of his fellow Scot rules him and those possessing similar credentials out of the equation.
In Ferguson’s mind, the only coaches who he deems worth of consideration are Mourinho and Guardiola, whose battle for supremacy in the Iberian peninsula proved so captivating in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 Spanish seasons.
The Real Madrid manager has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League when he leaves the Bernabeu, while former Barcelona boss Guardiola will have the pick of some of Europe’s marquee clubs as his year’s sabbatical draws to a close.
Some senior figures at Old Trafford are concerned that Mourinho could be too high maintenance, both in terms of his transfer market demands and capacity for courting controversy.
However, the Portuguese and Ferguson share a healthy mutual respect and the Scot sees in Mourinho a driven man who reminds him of himself during his early years, using similar motivational and psychological tactics.
And in a recent interview, Mourinho said he would like to emulate the United boss by continuing to coach in his eighth decade. “I understand perfectly why Alex is still in the job (at the age of 70) and I think I will be the same,” he said. In turn Ferguson has even gone to the lengths of saying that Mourinho would enjoy more power at Old Trafford than he has at the Bernabeu.
THE VIEW FROM SPAIN
'WOULD MOU BE INTERESTED? ABSOLUTELY'
It is no secret that "The Special One" wants to go back to England as soon as he leaves Real Madrid. He even reiterated the point in an interview with Sky Sports a few days go. Would he be interested in Manchester United? Absolutely, for a man with Mou's ego, succeeding one of the best managers in history would be an honour and a challenge.
The question, obviously is, when. When would Mourinho leave Madrid? Difficult to tell. If he wins the Champions League he might feel his task is over and look for a new challenge, but if he doesn't, the trigger-happy Florentino Pérez could decide that the Portuguese experiment is over and look for a more "manageable" coach.
Would Mou be a good fit for United, in terms of ambition and profile he surely would be, but after having the same manager for almost three decades, would the club's owners want to hire someone who has never coached a club for more than five years? I wouldn't be so sure... Martin Langer | Goal.com Spain

Guardiola, too, ticks a lot of boxes for the United powerbrokers, including the manager. They remember not only the style in which Barcelona played while dominating European football for four years but the dignity the Catalan showed after his team ripped United apart in two Champions League finals.
The former Barca boss was even photographed with Sir Alex Ferguson in New York at the US Open tennis final during the recent international break, although United dismissed suggestions that the pair met to discuss the possibility of the Spaniard succeeding Ferguson at Old Trafford.
"The business of who succeeds him is paramount in Ferguson's mind - and Mourinho and Guardiola are the only two who, right now, he would considering entrusting the immediate and long-term future of the club to," another source told Goal.com.
Indeed, while the Scot is expected to remain involved at Old Trafford when he steps down and said earlier this year that he would be keen on a similar ambassadorial role to the one that long-time United director Sir Bobby Charlton has at the club, so keen is he to protect his legacy and safeguard United’s future, Ferguson is utterly mindful about the adverse effect it could have if the club miss out on Mourinho or Guardiola.
So much so, the Scot is prepared to time his exit to ensure United do not miss out on their top choice, heightening talk around the club that next summer - when Guardiola is expected to return from his sabbatical and Mourinho will have been at Real Madrid three years - could be pivotal.
Ferguson has a one-year rolling contract at United, designed to ensure there is no on-going speculation about his position and allowing him to feel backed by the club without being press-ganged into any decision about his exit plan. There is complete trust on both sides and a degree of financial security for the two parties.
However, the Scot - on the bench when legendary manager Jock Stein passed away during a Scotland v Wales match in 1985 - is also keenly aware of his own age and health.
Speaking last New Years’ Eve in an interview to mark his 70th birthday, Ferguson revealed his intention to stay in the job well into his 70s. He said: “I hope I have a long time left. As long as my health stays up, I would hope to have another three years at the club. I am still enjoying it.
“As someone who loves his job I am not about to let my years alone dictate my future. At my age health becomes the key issue for a man's work and I am happy to say I have been blessed with stamina and energy that sees me coping with what I admit is a very demanding job.”
In a separate interview two months later, Ferguson's outlook was similarly long-termist. “I don’t know how long I can last now but if my health stays up I don’t think another two or three years would harm me,” he said.
In both instances, the Scot highlighted the significance of his health and the events of the last few months may have contributed to a shift in his thinking.
Ferguson was treated in hospital at the end of May after suffering a nosebleed which, according to his close friend, the American broadcaster Charlie Stillitano, left him in “tremendous pain”.
It is a problem which is believed to have afflicted the 70-year-old again this summer and could have contributed to his decision not to travel on the Scandinavian leg of the club’s gruelling pre-season tour, which spanned five countries and three continents.
Meanwhile, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, a fellow septuagenarian, is among those who believe Sir Alex is in the final season of his glittering United reign. Speaking in May, Whelan said: “After next season, Sir Alex will call it a day because he had a little scare.”
Gill has claimed that Ferguson’s retirement date is a “non-issue” and not a concern for the hierarchy, although he has spoken of the requirement for a “sensible transition to the new manager”.
And that is paramount in Ferguson's thinking as he juggles the demands of a 27th top-flight campaign with precisely planning the continuation not only his personal legacy, but that of the club's remarkable success over the past two decades.
Still, the decision on when to go will be left to the man himself to make. Similarly to Eric Cantona’s abrupt retirement announcement 15 years ago, few are likely to see it coming.
Arsenal announce pre-tax profit of €46m for 2011-12
The north London club released promising financial figures on Thursday, but saw their wage bill rise considerably following summer spending in the transfer window last year
Sep 27, 2012 3:25:00 PM
By Jay Jaffa
Arsenal have announced a pre-tax profit of €46 million on turnover of €306m for 2011-12.
The club also confirm player trading profit of €33m following the sale of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.
After a summer that saw the arrival of Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Yossi Benayoun, Gervinho, Park Chu-Young, Andre Santos and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the north Londoners have also seen their wage bill jump from €157m to €181m, leaving only City, Chelsea and Manchester United ahead of them.
Arsene Wenger spoke about the club's financial position - something he has kept a keen interest in during his time at the club.
He told reporters: "We want to spend our money in the right way. We are not scared to spend the money.
"With some clubs we can't compete on certain players - and for the rest, we only want to bring in players who add something to our squad and give a chance as well to the young players we have.
"We have good players, because to buy one more, we have to get one out.
Reflecting on the expected announcement, he added: "Our numbers are good. Under the actual circumstances this is quite positive because the whole [global] environment is not positive.
"We are very lucky because we have a good support and the income of our gates is very high.
"We have to maintain that by keeping our fans happy and to continue to manage well in the way that we do it."
The overall turnover figure of €306m is down on 2010-11's €322m on account of a reduction in property activity. The figure is split between €120m in matchday income, €107m for broadcasting payments, €66m for commercial projects and retail, €9.6m on property and €3.7m on player trading.
Ryan Tunnicliffe's Manchester United debut wins his father £10,000 (€12,600)
After betting £100 (€120) on his son when he was nine, that he would play for the first team, Mick Tunnicliffe makes a 100/1 profit - with a 350/1 wager on an England bow waiting

Ryan Tunnicliffe has won his father £10,000 (€12,600) by making his first competitive debut for Manchester United in Wednesday's 2-1 League Cup win over Newcastle.
The 19-year-old came on to replace fellow debutant Marnick Vermijl at Old Trafford, which was not only a personal highlight for the former Peterborough loanee, but a family highlight as his father’s 10-year-old 100/1 bet finally paid out.
Mick Tunnicliffe was so certain that his son would make it as a professional footballer that he put a £100 (€120) bet on at bookmakers William Hill that his son would play a competitive first-team game for Manchester United.
The bet was looking good as Tunnicliffe progressed through United’s youth set-up, even captaining the academy to an FA Youth Cup triumph two years ago.
With £10,000 (€12,600) already in his pocket, Mick Tunnicliffe will be hoping his son eventually makes an England debut as he put on another £100 bet at the same time but with odds of 350/1 which, if successful, would pay out a further £35,000.
“The last time a bet of this nature cost us £10,000 was when Chris Kirkland made his debut in goal for England, also landing a £100 bet for his father,” said William Hill's media relations manager, Graham Sharpe.
“We will obviously be paying close attention to the progress of Ryan’s career in the future.”
RETURN ... Jack Wilshere will play for Arsenal's Under-21s on Monday
By CHARLIE WYETT

ARSENE WENGER has joked that Jack Wilshere could return for England in their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers... as they are only playing San Marino!
The Arsenal boss will give Wilshere a one-hour run-out against West Brom Under-21s on Monday.
Midfielder Wilshere has been out for 15 months with ankle and knee problems but is now finally back in full training.
England manager Roy Hodgson will name his squad next week for next month’s qualifiers against San Marino at Wembley and Poland in Warsaw.
Wenger said: “I think England will be too early for him. He has not played for 14 months. Who do England play, San Marino? Actually, I think he can play in that game!
“Jack will play on Monday, maybe an hour. It’s another important step but we have to calm your impatience a little bit.
“It is fantastic for him, especially when you are out for such a long time.”
Gunners striker Olivier Giroud admits breaking his goals duck is a huge weight off his shoulders.
The £12million summer signing from Montpellier hit the opener in the 6-1 Capital One Cup rout of Coventry, after not scoring in six previous games.
He said: “I feel happiness and relief after this goal, which I have been chasing a long time. The fact I hadn’t scored played in my head. It lifts the weight off my shoulders.”
CASHING IN ... Arsenal sold Robin van Persie to Man Utd in the summer
By DAN KING, Sport Uncovered
Published: 27th September 2012
ARSENAL’S pre-tax profits jumped more than £20million to £36.6m last season despite turnover falling from £255.7m to £243m.
But the headline on the Gunners’ website ‘Club remains on track to comply with Financial Fair Play rules’ will hardly set Gunners fans’ pulses racing.
Selling Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri kept Arsenal well in the black. It is the fifth time in six years Arsenal have made money on transfers since leaving Highbury.
All very admirable, assuming of course UEFA apply FFP rules strictly on clubs — such as Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain, who recently announced laughably generous sponsorship deals with, er, Qatari businesses.
Selling Robin van Persie guarantees another healthy profit next year. But maybe the headline should be ‘Cash-rich club remains on course not to win trophy’.
Heskey touches down to start Newcastle Jets career The former England international has arrived in Australia, and believes he will be fit for the Jets' opener against Adelaide United on October 7

By Paddy Higgs
Emile Heskey has revealed that the Newcastle Jets' delegation to England to talk with him personally played a key role in his decision to join the club.
Heskey and his family touched down in Newcastle early Friday morning local time, with the 34-year-old having penned a one-year marquee deal for the 2012-13 A-League season.
It is the striker's first move overseas in a notable career, which includes stints at Premier League clubs Liverpool and Leicester City and 62 caps for his country.
He left Aston Villa after the 2011-12 season, following just one goal in 28 appearances in his final campaign at Villa Park.
"It was a bit of a long flight, but I'm finally here and I'm raring to go," Heskey told the club's website upon landing in Australia.
"I've heard a lot about my teammates… Bridgey [former Leeds United and current Jets striker Michael Bridges] has told me quite a bit about the league and the team.
"I spoke to Robbie Fowler and he's told me a lot about the league and everything as well.
"I'm just raring to go really. I'm looking forward to meeting the lads, having a bit of a training run with them and seeing how things go."
Heskey said he had been training with former club Wigan and "should be OK" for the Jets' season opener against Adelaide United on October 7 at Hunter Stadium.
He also revealed the club's delegation, including Jets chief executive officer Robbie Middleby, to meet him in England was one of the factors in his signing.
"When Robbie flew that long flight over to see me and basically sell the club to me, it was a nice gesture from them," he said.
"Basically they just told me it was a family club. I started at Leicester [City] and it was a family run club. Everyone knows everyone, everyone works hard for each other and he just said it's the same thing [at Newcastle].
"It's like going back to the beginning, but somewhere else."
Terry is no racist, claims Mourinho after Chelsea captain is slapped with four-game ban
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 05:31 GMT, 28 September 2012 | UPDATED: 06:45 GMT, 28 September 2012
Jose Mourinho has leapt to the defence of his former Chelsea captain John Terry. The defender was banned for four games and fined £220,000 for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers player Anton Ferdinand. But Real Madrid boss Mourinho denies the 31-year-old is racist.
Guilty: John Terry was banned for four games by the FA on Thursday
'He's not a racist - that's 100 per cent,' he told CNN.'We had a squad where we had 12 African players in the squad. It was a fantastic squad and he always had a great relationship with every one of them.'But in football it can happen during a match, because football sometimes is more than a game and sometimes you have reactions that don't represent what you are really.
Backing: Jose Mourinho has defended his former Chelsea captain Terry
'Probably he had a racist comment or attitude against an opponent. Sometimes in football we do things the wrong way.
'If he had that reaction, he should pay - but please don't say he's a racist. (Didier) Drogba, (Claude) Makelele...all of them will say he's not a racist.
'I never felt it (racism) in my dressing room. And I have always had African players in every one of my teams.'
Martinez to put together DVD defence for FA charge after Old Trafford outburst
By JOHN EDWARDS PUBLISHED: 21:42 GMT, 27 September 2012 | UPDATED: 21:42 GMT, 27 September 2012
Roberto Martinez will contest his FA charge and is putting together DVD evidence to back his belief that Wigan get a raw deal every time they visit Old Trafford. The Wigan manager faces a disciplinary hearing after claiming his side had 'not been measured the same way' by referee Michael Oliver in their 4-0 defeat by Manchester United earlier this month. The charge relates to an FA rule concerning media comments that might appear to question the impartiality of match officials, but Martinez is adamant he can prove his innocence.
Decision: Roberto Martinez is set to appeal
'I absolutely did not impugn Michael Oliver's integrity,' he said. 'I was speaking about the situation as a whole, and what has happened to us in our past four visits to Old Trafford.'It was not opinion, it was fact, and we can back it up by collating all the key incidents that have gone against us in that time. Danny Welbeck got away with exactly the same sort of challenge that cost Hugo Rodallega a straight red card two years ago, so we are not being measured the same way.'I want to be at the hearing to present my case, and it would make sense to have visual evidence to back it up. It wasn't an emotional outburst, and it never crossed my mind that I might get a call from the FA. I was surprised, because I never once suggested anyone was doing it on purpose. I was simply saying the reality is that not one single decision has gone our way in four years of going to Old Trafford.'It's hard enough going to places like Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and The Emirates. If decisions go against you, it becomes impossible. That's why I said you need a strong referee, with a strong clear mind, for those games, and I stand by that.'

Leeds set for £52m takeover deal with Middle-East bank... and Bates is on way out
By JOHN EDWARDS PUBLISHED: 08:18 GMT, 27 September 2012 | UPDATED: 07:47 GMT, 28 September 2012
Ken Bates' controversial seven year reign as Leeds United owner is nearing an end after investment bank Gulf Finance House emerged as front-runners to complete a £50million-plus takeover. The Bahrain-based company sent a letter to their country's stock exchange, confirming that GFH Capital, one of their subsidiaries, were to 'lead and arrange' the purchase of Leeds City Holdings, who own the club.
Getting what they wanted: Ken Bates is set to leave Leeds
Leaving: Bates has been at the club seven years
There was no mention of who they were acting for, but it is thought Gulf Finance House hope to assume control themselves, in a deal that is reportedly worth in the region of £52m.The decision by GFH to break cover finally identifies them as the Middle East investors Bates has been courting all summer.Leeds announced three months ago that they had entered an exclusivity agreement with an unnamed party, and leading officials from GFH Capital have since been seen in the former Chelsea chairman's company.
Deputy chief executive David Haigh, director Salem Patel and fellow board member Hisham Alrayes were all guests of Bates at last Saturday's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest at Elland Road.As a further indication that a takeover could be imminent, Leeds fan Haigh not only returned to Elland Road for Tuesday night's Capital One Cup win over Everton, but tweeted a photograph taken from his directors' box seat in the East Stand.
Private equity firm GFH Capital specialise in investing in 'growth companies' and have been at the forefront of discussions to buy out Bates' 72.85 per cent stake in Leeds.Bates said on Saturday that the prospective purchasers were 'a banking institution and public company with interests across the Gulf, Asia and Africa'.With GFH showing their hand, a deal could be close, though rumours persist that other interested parties are monitoring these developments and considering whether to enter the bidding.
Up for the cup: Leeds beat Everton 2-1 at Elland Road on Tuesday night
A GFH statement read: 'Further to the news published in the Gulf Daily News on the 25th and 26th Sep 2012, referring to the proposed acquisition of Leeds United Football Club (LUFC), GFH would like to confirm that GFH Capital Limited, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Gulf Finance House, has signed an agreement to lead and arrange the acquisition of Leeds City Holdings, the parent company of LUFC.'Haigh, who has family from the Leeds area, said on his Twitter account : 'Good morning everyone. Thank you for all your messages of support. They are very important to us. #LUFC'.In recent seasons, supporters have become increasingly frustrated with a perceived lack of investment under the current regime and have repeatedly chanted 'Bates Out' at home games during the current campaign.
I'll only spend if we sell, says Wenger despite Arsenal announcing record profits
By MATT BARLOW PUBLISHED: 21:42 GMT, 27 September 2012 | UPDATED: 21:42 GMT, 27 September 2012
Arsene Wenger defended his transfer policy, claiming he was not afraid to spend Arsenal's growing fortune as the club recorded pre-tax profits of nearly £37million.The Gunners are in rude health, thanks largely to player sales with transfer fees for Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy included in the financial results released on Thursday for the 12 months to the end of May this year. Match-day income is up slightly, to more than £95m for the year and promises to keep rising given that the cheapest tickets for Saturday's Chelsea game at the Emirates were priced £62, making it the most expensive game in Barclays Premier League history.
Cash-flow: Arsene Wenger defended Arsenal's transfer policy on Thursday
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis felt the need to stress in his report that the money was available for Wenger to invest in new players if he considered it necessary.
'Our numbers are good,' said Wenger. 'They are pleasing, very pleasing. We are very lucky because we have good support and the income of our gates is very high.
'We have to maintain that by keeping our fans happy and to continue to manage well in the way we do it.'We are not scared to spend the money but we feel that even if we spend our money we can't compete with some clubs on certain players.
'We have good players and to buy one more, we have to get one out. We want to spend our money in the right way.'
Arsenal's wage bill is the Premier League's fourth biggest but their top rate does not rival Manchester City, Chelsea or Manchester United and Eden Hazard is among those the Gunners were unable to land.Hazard was courted by many clubs including Arsenal before opting to join Chelsea, who paid Lille £32m.
'All the big budgets in England were after him,' said Wenger. 'The transfer price was fixed, because he had a clause, so everybody was at the same level.'I cannot tell you how close we were because I don't know what Chelsea paid in the end.'
The joy of six: Arsenal romped to victory over Coventry on Wednesday
Having started impressively at Stamford Bridge, Hazard is expected to play at the Emirates tomorrow but the Gunners are relieved there will be no more punishment at the hands of Didier Drogba.Drogba scored 13 goals in 14 games against Arsenal but left Chelsea after eight years in the summer to join Shanghai Shenhua. 'I don't know how much they miss him but we don't,' said Wenger. 'He did a lot of damage against us every game. I feel last year, honestly, he had an average season in the Premier League but in the cups he was absolutely influential and decisive.
Welcome return: Jack Wilshere is back in training
'He was a big part of their success in the FA Cup and Champions League because he was massive. He has that quality and even when he was on a bad day for 80 minutes he didn't give up and kept his focus and his desire to be efficient. He was an exceptional player.'Chelsea have gone with a different style, they have rejuvenated because they bought some very young players with maybe a more technical style. They have gone a little bit more creative.'
Wenger confirmed Jack Wilshere will make his long-awaited comeback after injury in Arsenal's development team at West Bromwich Albion on Monday. He also warned Roy Hodgson not to expect Wilshere to be reporting next month's international games, before joking: 'Who does England play? San Marino? I think he can play in that game.'
Ambitious AVB plans to storm Old Trafford by telling Spurs to attack Manchester United
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTE RPUBLISHED: 18:03 GMT, 27 September 2012 | UPDATED: 18:03 GMT, 27 September 2012
Andre Villas-Boas will encourage his team to attack Manchester United on Saturday despite the Tottenham manager's harrowing experience at Old Trafford with Chelsea last term. Villas-Boas suffered his first loss in English football at Old Trafford when his Chelsea side went down 3-1 to Sir Alex Ferguson's men. Chelsea blew a number of chances in the first half and they paid the price by going down 3-0 at half-time before Fernando Torres missed an open goal after the break.
Preparations: Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas (centre) takes training on Thursday
Eye on the ball: Jermain Defoe in training
Such a collapse could discourage a manager from instructing his team to go on the offensive there again, but Villas-Boas is in a confident mood having won over a large part of the Spurs support by recording three wins in four matches.'That is the way I like my teams to play,' Villas-Boas said. 'We obviously know that it is extremely difficult there, but that doesn't mean that you might not be given a chance when you play that (attacking) way.'In the end it's about taking your opportunities.
Had (Chelsea) scored then maybe the result would have been different, so to try to get a result against United will be excellent for us.'The Capital One Cup victory in Carlisle may not end up being Villas-Boas' biggest accomplishment during his time at White Hart Lane, but it did ensure Spurs maintained the momentum that they have gathered in the last two weeks. From being booed off against Norwich and West Brom, Spurs have picked up wins against Reading and QPR while they were very unlucky not to beat Lazio in the Europa League last week.
There is still plenty of work to be done with the squad, but Villas-Boas is so confident about his team's improvement that he has his sights set on nearing the top of the Barclays Premier League table by winning at Old Trafford for the first time since 1989.
Thumbs up: Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon looks positive during the warm-up at Spurs Lodge
'It would make us very proud to go there and get a win that would shorten the distance to the top,' Villas-Boas said.'That would hopefully help us profit in some way from the clash between Arsenal and Chelsea. 'We can't run away from our responsibilities. The statistics are there. 'We hope to break them one day and hopefully it will be on Saturday.'The game against npower League One opposition gave Villas-Boas the opportunity to blood some of the youngsters that were often overlooked by his predecessor.
Andros Townsend, 21, was the most impressive of the new crop on show at Brunton Park. The winger, who was on loan at Leeds and Birmingham last season, ran half the length of the pitch before scoring his third goal for the club. Villas-Boas, who has brought Townsend off the bench three times this season, was delighted with the England Under 21 player's performance in Cumbria.'In the last couple of games that he has played he has made quite the difference in terms of his contribution to the team,' Villas-Boas said.'Obviously he is competing against the best players in the world with Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Clint Dempsey so it's difficult, but if a player so young like this triumphs over players of this dimension then the future is his.'Ryan Mason and Adam Smith also started the game at Carlisle, and Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen was impressed with what he saw.
'The guys who played are real quality players, very skilful and with a good mentality," said Vertonghen, who signed from Ajax in the summer. 'I think that Ajax, for young players, is one of the best clubs in the world at which to develop, so I know good young players and we have them here at Tottenham. 'What I have seen here makes me think that all these players can eventually play for the first team.'
Rodgers rings ref boss to defend Suarez and calls for end to victimisation
By DOMINIC KING PUBLISHED: 21:42 GMT, 27 September 2012 | UPDATED: 07:18 GMT, 28 September 2012
Brendan Rodgers has leapt to the defence of Luis Suarez after ringing Mike Riley to seek answers that Liverpool are not being victimised by referees. Rodgers spoke to PGMO chief Riley on Thursday, having reached the end of his tether with some of the decisions that have been taken against his side. Liverpool, who are yet to win in the Barclays Premier League, have not had a penalty so far and two players have been contentiously sent-off.
Treat him right: Suarez in training ahead of the game with Norwich
The Liverpool manager, whose side face Norwich on Saturday, outlined his grievances to Riley after Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson claimed Suarez, who was denied a spot-kick against Manchester United last week, is being unfairly treated.
It is a view with which Rodgers agrees ‘My main concern is that we have not had the rub of the green,’ said Rodgers. ‘I rang Mike and he was probably expecting me to call a bit earlier.‘I have seen lots of decisions go against us. I’m still waiting for the assessor from the Manchester United game to call. It is just something that I feel is important – that we are not getting targeted. It is important that referees understand we have real honest players.‘Luis is a wonderful talent. If he goes down in the area, it is a penalty. But from what I have seen so far, it looks like he is not going to get a decision.’
The tipping point for Rodgers came in Wednesday’s excellent win at West Brom in the League Cup when a late tackle on Jordan Henderson from Solomon Mulumbu, similar to the one for which Jonjo Shelvey was red card for his foul on Jonny Evans, went unpunished.
‘The game against West Brom is a good example,’ said Rodgers, who has not ruled out the prospect of Daniel Agger making a quick return to action at Carrow Road after being stretchered off last Sunday. ‘Jordan received a terrible tackle and their player (Mulumbu) wasn’t booked.
Pulling the strings: Brendan Rodgers directs his players in training
‘The Andre Wisdom makes a really good tackle in return and gets booked. We play here to the letter of the law, in the right spirit, but maybe in this opening period it hasn’t worked. Does diving on the floor mean you might get the decision? We have to be careful with that.’I just said to Mike we have to be careful that we don't discourage people and players who are trying to respect the game.It is not something we are going to encourage. We want to win the game but we want to win it by fair means.’
Rodgers meanwhile insists he is not worried his side are in the bottom three after failing to win in the Barclays Premier League so far this term.'Every game is important, but we've got 99 points to play for. There's a hell of a long way to go,' he said.'Our first five games, performance-wise, have been good. We haven't got the points that we really wanted in the games, or even deserved in the games.
Taking a tumble: Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers does not believe Luis Suarez is treated fairly by referees
'Certainly on Saturday we'll really be looking to hopefully get the points that we deserve and take it from there.'I look no further on than that, really. I'm not concerned at all. We'll assess it after the opening 10 or 11 games.'Certainly in performance levels, the players have been brilliant and they've got their rewards in the cup competitions.'In the league, they haven't quite got the points for what the performances are but very soon that will change.'I'm seeing the elements of the game that we've been working on - our domination of the ball and creativity has been excellent - but we need to convert and importantly we need to get points.'
Craven Cottage boss Martin Jol also confirmed the club are closing in on a deal to sign a midfielder, while Mahamadou Diarra's knee injury is not as severe as first feared

Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov will be sidelined for up to two weeks after injuring his hip in training.
The 31-year-old, who signed from Manchester United in August, has netted twice in three appearances for Fulham but Martin Jol has confirmed the Bulgarian will miss his side's clash against Manchester City on Saturday.
"Unfortunately Dimitar is injured now and can't play on Saturday so that is the disappointing thing. He will be out for the next two weeks," said Jol.
"In his session he was looking good, as usual, and then his final shot he felt something and he had to go in and stop training. It appears he had – not a tear – but a sort of problem with his hip and upper thigh so we couldn't take the risk to involve him against City."
The Fulham boss also revealed the club are closing in on signing a new midfielder but ruled out a move for Nigel Reo-Coker and Owen Hargreaves who were both released in the summer.
"It will be a central midfielder from abroad and we will have to test him to see if he's fit and then we will talk to him. I'm confident of having the deal sorted next week," said Jol.
"We're trying to do something in the next couple of days but not with Nigel Reo-Coker or Owen Hargreaves."
Jol has also been handed an injury boost after Mahamadou Diarra, who was initially ruled out for around six months, underwent surgery to fix a knee problem. The 31-year-old midfielder is now likely to be sidelined for around a month.
He added: "Diarra had a minor operation but he will still be out for the next four weeks at least. They removed a few little pieces of bone from his knee and that was it so that was pleasing. There was not a lot of damage.
"If there had been more damage with his knee with his ligaments or his cruciate then he could have been out for a lot longer but it was exactly what we thought it was. But it’s still four weeks."
