Blow for QPR as striker Johnson is set to miss rest of the season with knee injury

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 10:41 GMT, 17 September 2012 | UPDATED: 10:58 GMT, 17 September 2012

QPR striker Andrew Johnson looks set to miss the majority of the season after suffering a serious knee injury during Saturday's goalless draw against Chelsea. The 31-year-old was forced off in the first half of the Barclays Premier League stalemate at Loftus Road, with subsequent scans revealing the extent of the problem. 'Andy Johnson suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Chelsea and is likely to be sidelined for the majority of the season,' QPR posted on their official Twitter.

Injury blow: Andy Johnson leaves the field after picking up an injury against Chelsea

Johnson, who has won eight caps for England, joined Rangers on a two-year contract in the summer after his Fulham deal expired. The severity of the injury - sustained on Johnson's third appearance for the club - will come as a blow to manager Mark Hughes, who had expressed optimism the former Birmingham, Crystal Palace and Everton man would not be out for too long.'AJ felt something in his knee. We hope he's going to be okay, but it's a little bit of worry,' Hughes said after the game.

Pain game: Johnson lies on the ground after picking up his injury

'You need players like AJ in the squad because they give so much. We'll send him for a scan over the next few days and hopefully he'll be okay.'Rangers, who have picked up only two points from four games so far this season, will continue their search for a first win of the campaign at Tottenham on Sunday.

Stop selling! Arsenal legend Adams slams Wenger's transfer policy

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 13:55 GMT, 18 September 2012 | UPDATED: 13:55 GMT, 18 September 2012

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams admits it is 'hard to take' seeing his old club continue to sell their best players - and questioned if that policy can see them compete again for trophies. The 45-year-old spent almost 20 seasons at Highbury, winning the Double twice under Arsene Wenger. Adams believes allowing the likes of Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song and captain Robin van Persie to move to rival teams goes against everything they were trying to build for the future, claiming it made them nothing more than a 'feeder club'.

Glory days: Wenger (left) and Adams (right) celebrate winning the Double in 2002

Speaking in the London Evening Standard, Adams said: 'It sends out all the wrong messages for me, being a selling club. 'Piece by piece for seven years, it chips away at your credibility. Selling your best players is part of that.

'I very much see Arsenal as the biggest club in the world, so I can't understand why anybody would want to play anywhere else - but I can understand it was very different for me. 'I had people in the boardroom who were very ambitious and wanted to win like me - that's easy then, your contract goes in front of you and you sign it because you are all pulling in the same direction.

'Robin wants to win and he thinks that he can win things with Manchester United and he can't with Arsenal. That is hard to take.
'I am looking at it not as an ex-player or pundit, but as a fan and giving what the fans are thinking and feeling.'

Jumping ship: Van Persie left the club for Man United in the summer

Adams former defensive partner Steve Bould has moved into the Arsenal dugout as assistant manager this season following the retirement of Pat Rice. The Gunners have since conceded only once in their four unbeaten Barclays Premier League games. Adams, though, feels Arsenal's impetus will always be on the attack.

'The problem for me in the last seven years is the defensive vulnerabilities as a team - the goalkeeper, the back four, even the central midfield players, the mentality of the team,' he said. 'I don't think they are a team that are set up to do what Chelsea did last year in the Champions League and I don't think Arsene wants to. 'I don't want to put these current players down because they are fantastic, but we used to train constantly with [manager] George [Graham].

Case for the defence: Adams feels Wenger and Bould (left) must improve Arsenal's defending

'We worked at it. We went out there and did it every minute, morning and afternoon. It used to drive us insane but on a Saturday you would know it inside out. 'Year in, year out the team with the best defence win the league and we saw the team with the best defence win the Champions League, so it makes you wonder why a lot of teams aren't focusing more on defending.

'It's a European thing. I have said it to Arsene - 'your full-backs are playing like wingers'. Teams were exploiting it at the Emirates and it was a massive flaw. 'Arsene would say, "I know". I think he recognises that's a problem. Whether he does anything about it...' Former Portsmouth boss Adams is working in Azerbaijan as an advisor to Gabala FC, whom he also briefly managed last season, and will start a stint as a TV pundit for Tuesday night's Champions League Group B opener in Montpellier.

French assignment: Arsenal face Montpellier on Tuesday night

While Adams expects the French champions to offer little trouble for the Gunners, he feels the European Cup remains out of their reach. 'I expect them to score goals, but they cannot win the Champions League with their current mentality,' he said. 'I hope they prove me wrong, but against the better teams I think they will fall short again.

'I am not alone here - I think most of the Arsenal fans would agree with me. 'Strange things happen, like Chelsea winning with not the greatest team in the world, but they did have the whole team fighting to keep clean sheets. 'To actually think you are going to play Barcelona or Real Madrid off the pitch... I don't think this team are good enough to do that.'

I'll rotate goalkeepers until I find my No 1, says Manchester United boss Ferguson

By CHRIS WHEELER PUBLISHED: 21:30 GMT, 18 September 2012 | UPDATED: 06:43 GMT, 19 September 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson's vow that Manchester United will tighten up in Europe this season was undermined by an admission that he no longer has a first-choice goalkeeper. Ferguson said there is a 'strong possibility' he will recall David de Gea in place of Anders Lindegaard for Wednesday night's Champions League opener at home to Galatasaray.

No first choice: Ferguson will choose between De Gea and Lindegaard for Wednesday's clash with Galatasaray

But it's clear De Gea - dropped for two games after mistakes against Fulham last month - has lost his No 1 status as Ferguson juggles the two men until one establishes himself as a long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar.He said: 'I think the most important thing I'm trying to achieve is experience of the English game. They are both young, they don't have the experience of a Van der Sar or Schmeichel, so alternating is not a problem for me.'

Rock solid: Sir Alex Ferguson wants a settled defence including the likes of Rio Ferdinand (right)

Rarely have United been able to field a regular defence during a three-season period of group stage matches on home soil that has secured a paltry total of three wins.Already this term, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been ruled out for extended periods, forcing Michael Carrick into service as an emergency central defender.Even allowing for Rio Ferdinand missing the odd game, such measures should not be required again now that Jonny Evans has recovered from an ankle injury. But Ferguson realises the position is precarious - and of huge significance.'At the moment with Smalling and Jones long-term, I'm left with three centre-backs, Vidic, Ferdinand and Evans,' said the United boss.'If I was guaranteed two of those being fit for the rest of the season I'd take that gladly right now.'It's not been the case in the last two or three years, when we have had a really rough ride.'I've had to alternate centre-backs. Go back two years ago and we had Carrick, (Darren) Fletcher and (Patrice) Evra there.'That's a key issue. I can't hide that. I just hope I get a bit of luck in that respect.'

Man United v Galatasaray

Manchester United (4-4-1-1, probable): De Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Nani; Kagawa; Van Persie.

Galatasaray (4-3-3, prob): Muslera; Eboue, Cris, Kaya,Balta; Melo, Inan, A Yilmaz, Amrabat, Elmander, Bulut.

Referee: Wolfgang

Ferguson confirmed Kagawa is fit to make his European bow after shrugging off a back complaint he picked up on international duty with Japan. The summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund has quickly struck up an impressive partnership with Van Persie, although even with Wayne Rooney sidelined, Ferguson does have alternatives in attack, in stark contrast to his defensive woes.Javier Hernandez is one. Due to a series of setbacks, the Mexican struggled to emulate his stellar debut season last term.

However, after being given an extended summer break by Ferguson, who told Hernandez he could not link up with his country's gold medal-winning Olympic squad as had been anticipated prior to London 2012, the 24-year-old is refreshed and ready to play a full part in United's quest for silverware.'I don't like comparisons,' Hernandez said.'Some people thought my first season was very good, others felt it was OK. The last one was bad for some people, others thought it was OK or good.'I enjoyed my break. Only time will decide whether it helps me but I am happy. I am enjoying myself.'I still feel I am the luckiest player in the world to be at this club.'I will be ready when the boss needs me, whether that is to start or be a substitute.'I am focused on the most important thing, which is tomorrow's game.'

SKIP THAT ... Darren Bent was axed as captain in a bid to revive his scoring form

Net gain for Bent

Published: 18th September 2012

ASTON VILLA boss Paul Lambert admitted he stripped Darren Bent of the captaincy in a bid to get him scoring again.

The £24million striker was given the honour in pre-season but has yet to score in the league this term.

So Lambert made new Dutch defender Ron Vlaar skipper for Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Swansea.

Lambert said: “I wanted to give Darren a break.

“He’s playing well but I thought I’d change it and let him focus on scoring.

“Christian Benteke coming in and scoring also gave Darren a lift and there’s real competition there now with Gabby Agbonlahor returning too.”

Manchester United 'completely in support' of Liverpool over Hillsborough, says Sir Alex Ferguson

The 70-year-old has condemned chants from Red Devils supporters concerning the disaster which were aired during Saturday's 4-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford

Sep 18, 2012 4:38:00 PM

By Shane Farrington

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted the club are ready to support Liverpool“in every way” following the recent shocking revelations relating to the Hillsborough disaster.

Ninety-six Liverpool supporters were crushed to death during an FA Cup semi-final between the Reds and Nottingham Forest on April 15 1989 in Sheffield, though original inquests delivered a verdict of 'accidental death'.

Last week the Hillsborough Independent Panel released their findings, which cleared supporters of any wrongdoing and revealed that police had attempted to hide their culpability through a media-led smear campaign.

During United's 4-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford on Saturday, several supporters were heard to sing "always the victim, it's never your fault" - a chant which Sir Alex has now condemned.

"I didn't hear it [the chants at the Wigan game], but everyone else seemed to hear it. David Gill heard it in the director's box and was disappointed," he told reporters.

"The chant is a new chant. It only started after the Suarez situation [when the Liverpool striker was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra last season].

"But in the current climate and having spoken on Friday, asking our supporters to adhere to the policy that we want to adopt - that we're completely in support of Liverpool Football Club at this moment in time and we understand what those families must have felt during the week when they got that report - it was disappointing to hear that.

"It's a minority, though, and in society there's a minority who want to be heard. That's the difficulty you've got nowadays.

"As a club we're totally in support of Liverpool and the situation they're in. It's going to be a very emotional day on Sunday and we'll support them in every way we can."

United will face their bitter rivals at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool and Manchester United to release 96 red balloons before match at Anfield

Talks have taken place between Reds managing director Ian Ayre and Old Trafford chief executive David Gill as the two clubs plan to pay tribute to the Hillsborough victims

Liverpool and Manchester United will release 96 red balloons at Anfield before the match between the two clubs on Sunday as a tribute to those who passed away as a result of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Last week the Hillsborough Independent Panel published a report which cleared Reds fans of all responsibility for the events at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium after a 23-year campaign for justice led by the families of the victims.

Liverpool face their great rivals in their first home match since the publication of the report and the two clubs have held talks in order to plan a pre-match tribute.

Discussions are ongoing between Reds managing director Ian Ayre and United chief executive David Gill.

Three support groups - the Hillsborough Family Support Group, the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and Hope for Hillsborough - will be present at the fixture and a mosaic will be displayed on three sides of Anfield before kick-off.

The Kop, behind one goal, will display the words 'The Truth', the Anfield Road End opposite will show the number '96' and the Centenary Stand, facing the players' tunnel, will read 'Justice'.

"It is the first opportunity we have had as a football club to pay tribute at Anfield for what everyone has done - the families, the fans and various other people like Andy Burnham MP," Ayre commented. "It is a chance for everybody to show their respects."

The American shot-stopper was furious at being disrespected by the former World Cup winner as the Frenchman publicly wrote off his chances of being No.1 keeper at Tottenham

Brad Friedel has slammed former Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez following the Frenchman's comments which suggested Hugo Lloris should be the first choice at Tottenham.

The situation at Spurs is a tense one, with four goalkeepers on the books competing to be first choice. While Friedel is reaching the end of his career at the age of 41, he has been performing well this season for the club, before the deadline day arrival of France captain Hugo Lloris.

And Lloris' compatriot Barthez suggested that the choice was a simple one, telling Le Parisien: "Lloris is one of the five best goalkeepers in the world.

"He is faster than Friedel, he jumps higher, and he is very strong mentally. What is happening now is incomprehensible, but I am not concerned. He will become the centre-piece for the club.

"Hugo is a calm guy, a good worker. Tottenham will not let him stay on the bench for a long time."

But the comments seem to have upset the American keeper, who took to Twitter to highlight his issues with the former Manchester United man's comments.

"Just saw barthez comments," Friedel tweeted. "I normally don't comment on such crap but when disrespected by someone I don't respect I must.

"Barthez was ignorant, disrespectful and out of order to mention my name."

In the two games since Lloris' arrival, both keepers have played once, with Friedel taking charge of the 3-1 away win at Reading, and Lloris stepping in for the 0-0 home draw against Lazio.

Sir Alex Ferguson writes letter to Manchester United fans ahead of Liverpool fixture at Anfield

The Red Devils boss seeks to put an end to tensions and unsavoury chanting between the two clubs' supporters in the wake of the revelations in the Hillsborough report

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has written a letter to his side's traveling supporters for their game against Liverpool on Sunday urging an end to tensions between the two clubs.

Relations have been strained over recent years, with last season's controversy surrounding racist abuse between Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra creating an unsavoury atmosphere amongst fans.

Incidents of United fans standing in the way of gangways at away visits had prompted Liverpool to reduce ticket allocations for the Red Devils, a situation about which Sir Alex had previously spoken out.

After the publication of a report earlier in September exonerating Liverpool fans of responsibility for the deaths of 96 supporters at the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, and with a history of distasteful chanting about that tragedy to taunt the Anfield side, the Scot appealed to the better judgement of his team's following.

"Our rivalry with Liverpool is based on a determination to come out on top – a wish to see us crowned the best against a team that held that honour for so long," Sir Alex wrote in a document that will be handed out to all fans in the away end at Sunday's Premier League match.

"It cannot and should never be based on personal hatred."

Sir Alex Ferguson's letter in full...

Dear Supporter,

The great support you gave the team here last season has seen our allocation back up to near-full levels. I want you to continue that progress today.

But today is about much more than not blocking gangways. Today is about thinking hard about what makes United the best club in the world.

Our rivalry with Liverpool is based on a determination to come out on top – a wish to see us crowned the best against a team that held that honour for so long.

It cannot and should never be based on personal hatred. Just 10 days ago, we heard the terrible, damning truth about the deaths of 96 fans who went to watch their team try and reach the FA Cup final and never came back.

What happened to them should wake the conscience of everyone connected with the game.

Our great club stands with our great neighbours Liverpool today to remember that loss and pay tribute to their campaign for justice. I know I can count on you to stand with us in the best traditions of the best fans in the game.

BACKING ... Paul Lambert has sympathy for fellow boss Nigel Adkins

Published: 5 hrs ago

PAUL LAMBERT cannot believe there is speculation surrounding Nigel Adkins’ future at Southampton.

The Saints are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League having lost their opening four games and conceding 14 goals in the process.

But Lambert, who takes his Aston Villa side to St Mary’s tomorrow, insists his fellow manager deserves time to get things right.

He said: “It’s getting a bit silly now.

“With what he’s done for them, and when it’s only four games into the season, I think it’s a bit ridiculous.

“But football is like that — you just never know what’s around the corner.

“It’s getting harder and harder every year but I think that’s really unfair, especially as Nigel’s done a great job at Southampton.

“In the last few years they have done fantastically well getting promoted twice.

“The Premier League is an unforgiving division — every game is hard, whoever you are playing.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a side in the top six or bottom six. It’s a hard, hard league.”

They'll shake on it: Kop chief expects Suarez and Evra to overcome rivalry

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 14:35 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 15:18 GMT, 21 September 2012

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has played down the significance of the pre-match handshake between forward Luis Suarez and Manchester United's Patrice Evra this weekend.Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Evra during the corresponding fixture at Anfield last October and the row was further stoked by the Uruguayan's failure to shake Evra's hand before the return match at Old Trafford in February. But with Sunday's latest encounter between the two clubs at Anfield already certain to be a highly emotional affair in the wake of last week's damning revelations concerning the Hillsborough disaster, Ayre says the issue over whether the players shake hands or not is not at the forefront of his mind.

They'll shake: Ian Ayre says the handshake issue shouldn't overshadow Sunday's match

Ayre told talkSPORT: 'We will be doing a handshake as there always is and, as regards to the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra thing.'Luis is a grown-up, as I'm sure is Patrice Evra, and I think those players, like every other player on the pitch that day and everybody in the stadium, will recognise this isn't a day to talk about who is going to shake whose hand.'This is about everybody being together for a much more important cause.'The club understandably want the focus to be elsewhere on what will be a poignant afternoon, the first game at Anfield since the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel's report into the 1989 tragedy in Sheffield.

There have been repeated calls from Liverpool and United, with the latter's manager Sir Alex Ferguson particularly vocal, for fans on both sides to show respect, especially with regard to past tragedies.
Tasteless chants about Hillsborough and the 1958 Munich air disaster have been heard in the past and the clubs want it stopped.Ayre said: 'It will be an emotional and big game for everybody.'Obviously this is our first home game since the announcement and findings and it's a great opportunity for our fans to pay their respects and in many ways for everybody to pay respect to our fans.

Focused: Suarez in training ahead of Sunday's match at Anfield

'As much as the families and everyone else fought for this, it goes without saying that our fans have stuck with them and helped with that support throughout, so it's an important day for everyone. 'This is about using the stage to show the world how important this was and how important an announcement it was.'It's ironic really that it comes with our biggest game of the season so that is in some ways quite nice because the world will be watching.'We have massive respect for what Manchester United went through with their own tragedy and I remember in Kenny Dalglish's book he made the point that one of the first people to call him after the Hillsborough disaster was Sir Alex Ferguson, and that says it all.'Whatever happens on the pitch, we are all rivals, but off the pitch at times like this everybody comes together.'

Podolski ready to make his mark at Arsenal by getting a club tattoo on his arm

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 07:46 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 08:39 GMT, 21 September 2012

Lukas Podolski admits he could be tempted to have another tattoo if things continue to go well at Arsenal. Podolski has the crest of home-town club Cologne inked on the inside of his right arm as a mark of respect for the team he joined at the age of 10, and left for the second time this summer in an £11million deal. And the German striker, who endured a difficult three-season stint at Bayern Munich before returning home in 2009, is hopeful of making a similarly lasting success of his time at the Emirates Stadium.

We can speak about this in the next three or four years.'Podolski netted his third goal in as many games when the Gunners came from behind to beat Montpellier away in the Champions League on Tuesday night. And along with fellow summer signing Santi Cazorla, the 27-year-old has integrated quickly into an Arsenal side reshaped following the £24million sale of captain Robin van Persie to Manchester United. He added: 'When I came on the first day to the club everyone made it easy for me.

Cool as you like: Podolski scores against Montpellier

Arsenal have conceded just a single goal in the Barclays Premier League so far, and that following a mistake by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in the 6-1 thrashing of Southampton. Going forward the Gunners have looked almost irresistible, with the only thing missing being Olivier Giroud finding the net for the first time.Podolski admits Arsenal's passing style very much suits his game, whether playing wide on the left or down the centre. However, he warned against getting swept away in the hype as Arsenal prepare for Sunday's trip to champions Manchester City.'The team and [manager] Arsene [Wenger] make it easy. Last week we played very well.

This is the style of football that I like, we play with one or two touches,' he said.
'We play straight to the front, but we have only played four matches and we are not ready to speak about the title or the Champions League.'We must carry on playing like the last few matches and we must keep on fighting.'Jack Wilshere returned to training with the squad this week after missing the whole of last season with an ankle problem, but the England midfielder will not be rushed back into action.Szczesny, meanwhile, missed the midweek trip to France because of a rib problem, so Vito Mannone could again deputise at City.

Brazil football legend Ronaldo will star in his own reality TV show in a bid to lose weight.

The portly 36-year-old striker wants to ditch the extra pounds gained since quitting the sport so he is fit for an annual charity match, hosted alongside his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane, later this year. And for extra motivation, he will do so under the glare of millions as he appears in a regular segment on the popular Fantástico entertainment programme on the Globo channel.

Aguero set to be unleashed on Arsenal but crocked Nasri to miss date with old pals

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 09:43 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 11:58 GMT, 21 September 2012

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri seems certain to miss Sunday's Premier League encounter with former club Arsenal.Nasri limped out of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday night with a hamstring problem. However Mancini confirmed that striker Sergio Aguero was fit to start, as is Mario Balotelli.

The boss: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini arrives for his press conference on Friday morning

Aguero scored the goal that clinched City's first Barclays Premier League title in the dying seconds of last season but is yet to make an impression this term having suffered a knee injury in the opening fixture against Southampton last month.

He had hoped to make his return in the Spanish capital on Tuesday but events prevented manager Roberto Mancini bringing him on. While the problem with Nasri is not serious, manager Roberto Mancini feels this weekend will come too early for the France international.'I do not think he will be ready for Sunday,' said Mancini. 'We will try but it is difficult.

'I hope he will be okay for next week.'Balotelli was left out of City's squad altogether for the trip to Madrid amid suggestions of another bust-up with his manager. But the mercurial Italian striker is vying with Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko for a place up front against the Gunners.Defender Joleon Lescott will hope to reclaim his place but right-back Micah Richards (ankle) remains sidelined.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed City will wear black armbands on Sunday in honour of Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, the two Greater Manchester Police officers killed attending a routine report of a domestic burglary on Tuesday.

Hughes forced to patch QPR defence together after injuries decimate back line

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
PUBLISHED: 16:36 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 16:36 GMT, 21 September 2012

Mark Hughes admits injuries have left QPR short at the back for this weekend's trip to Tottenham. The R's have only picked up two points from their opening four Premier League matches and face a challenge to add to their tally on Sunday.Hughes will have to do without a number of key defenders against Spurs, with Anton Ferdinand, Fabio, Armand Traore and Stephane Mbia all unavailable through injury. They join Samba Diakite, Andy Johnson and possibly Adel Taarabt on the sidelines - a situation Hughes admits is far from ideal.

article-2206775-15083CEA000005DC-576_468x302.jpg

Hamstrung: Anton Ferdinand will miss QPR's trip to Tottenham

'We have got a number of injuries at the back, unfortunately,' the QPR manager said. 'Anton is not going to be available, although [his hamstring injury] is actually settling down a little bit quicker than we thought initially.

'That is good news but he is not going to be available this weekend and Fabio is going to be out for a number of weeks, which is a blow.
'To compound that, Armand Traore is not available either because of injury so we're going to have to move people around to compensate for that.
'Samba Diakite is not ready to be involved at first-team level yet. He needs a little bit more conditioning work to be ready for the Premier League.
'Adel Taarabt didn't complete the session today so we will have to check him tomorrow.

'He felt a bit of tightness [in his hamstring] so might not be available, so we've got a number of injuries moving into the game unfortunately.
'Stephane is not ready either. He still has a little bit of discomfort from the injury he picked up on international duty.
'It is one of those that has improved significantly but it is the last five percent of the injury, he is still getting a bit of pain when he sprints at full pace.
'We're not going to risk him this weekend. He might be an option in midweek but hopefully we'll get him back for this time next week.'One player who will not be back soon is summer acquisition Johnson. The former England striker has been ruled out for the majority of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury picked up against Chelsea last weekend.
'We're upset obviously for Andy and for ourselves as a club and as a team,' Hughes said.
'He showed us in his time with us why we brought him to the club, with the qualities that he has.
'Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to use those qualities for a significant amount of time.'His energy and his undoubted ability will be a loss for us but obviously you build your squad so you can cope when you have long-term injuries.

Selection headache: QPR boss Mark Hughes

'The absence of Andy will allow other players to come to the fore, I am sure.'While on-field matters remain Hughes' immediate focus, the ongoing John Terry case continues to rumble on in the background. The Spurs match comes the day before the Football Association's hearing starts into allegations the Chelsea defender racially abused Ferdinand, which Terry denies. It was reported this week that the QPR defender is considering civil action against Terry should he escape serious punishment from the FA, but that is not a course of action Hughes is aware of.

'I think everybody is hoping it is going to come to a conclusion and an end sooner rather than later,' Hughes said. 'I have not had a conversation with Anton in that regard (civil action).'I am not sure if that is actually his thinking, certainly I've not had a conversation in that regard to what options he has open to him.'But I am sure we will find that in the coming weeks if that's a route he wants to take.'We're at a point where it could have a conclusion but, like I said, it is not a decision I can have any influence on in all honesty.'

Beware of the backlash: Carrick warns United ahead of Liverpool clash

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 09:59 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 10:52 GMT, 21 September 2012

Michael Carrick believes Manchester United must be wary of a Liverpool side that will be determined to bounce back from their slow start to the season when the two clubs meet on Sunday. Liverpool have yet to win a game in the Premier League this season under new manager Brendan Rodgers. Much of the build-up to the game has been focused around the fallout from the Hillsborough report, but Carrick has called for focus ahead from his team-mates ahead of a tough Anfield assignment.

Match-winner: Carrick scored the only goal as United beat Galatasaray

'These games are a one-off - form goes out of the window,' said Carrick, who scored United's winner against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday night. 'The atmosphere is that little bit more special and the fans are certainly up for it more. 'The fact that Liverpool haven’t had the results they wanted so far doesn’t really come into it - that’s not on our minds. 'It’s about us going there and doing the right things.'We’re expecting Liverpool to bring their best game and we’ll have to bring our best game too to get a result.' United have not won in their last five visits to their fierce rivals, and Carrick is hoping to put and end to that record on Sunday. 'It’s something we’re hoping to put right and hopefully that starts this weekend,' he said.

'I enjoy it - it’s one of the best games to play in. To play in games like that are the ones you remember, especially the ones you win.
'It’s a special game of football. As a player, you appreciate what it means to everyone and the stature of the game in world football.
'It’s up there with any game in the world. Just to sample the atmosphere is special. Hopefully the game can live up to it.'
