Me and Mario are fine honest! Mancini gives Balotelli ANOTHER lifeline despite rift
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 10:33 GMT, 21 September 2012 | UPDATED: 14:21 GMT, 21 September 2012
Mario Balotelli has been handed another lifeline at Manchester City after manager Roberto Mancini insisted he has NOT had a bust-up with the controversial striker. The Italy international was dropped from City's European squad in mid-week and was forced to watch their 3-2 Champions league defeat to Real Madrid from the stands. It was believed that Mancini is fed up with Balotelli's wild ways - including his smoking habit - and is fast losing patience with the maverick 22-year-old.
The trip: Mario Balotelli jokes about with James Milner.
The push: Balotelli is pushed by Milner
The make up: Balotelli hugs Millner
But speaking at his weekly press conference at the club's Carrington training ground, Mancini played down talk of a rift between the pair. 'There has been no argument, and no row. Absolutely not,' he said. 'Mario went in the stand only because we started to play with Carlos Tevez in attack and we couldn't have three strikers on the bench.'
Ready to go: Mario Balotelli trains ahead of Sunday's game with Arsenal
No rift: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini claims there are no issues with him and Balotelli
In form: Carlos Tevez will be looking to add to his goals against Arsenal
What row? Roberto Mancini insists he is absolutely fine with striker Mario Balotelli
Balotelli partied until the early hours after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Stoke. He was pictured with boxer Amir Khan on a night out at Circle Club in Manchester. Mancini was said to be angry as he wanted the forward to rest ahead of their opening European match against the Spanish giants. As a punishment, Balotelli was ordered to travel to the Bernabeu despite reportedly being told he wouldn't play a part before stepping on the plane.
Bad habit: Balotelli has regularly been spotted smoking away from training and matches
Good example: Balotelli has also been pictured smoking in his Man City gear
Partying: Balotelli (right) was pictured with Amir Khan at the Circle Club on Saturday
Another growing concern for Mancini is Balotelli's smoking habit - infuriating for a club that pay him over £100,000 per week. Although it is not known just how much the former Inter Milan star smokes, he has regularly been pictured puffing on a cigarette away from his job. Despite his apparent frustrations, Mancini appears intent on giving Balotelli yet another chance and the striker is in contention to return to the City side for this Sunday's Barclays Premier League visit of unbeaten Arsenal.
Why Sir Alex Ferguson's rare moment of openness should resonate with Manchester United & Liverpool fans
The Red Devils' boss called for an end to the chants which have stained English football's biggest game ahead of the two sides' Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday

Sir Alex Ferguson has so often revelled in being painted as a man with a cold, ruthless disposition during an unparalleled 25-year stint at Manchester United.
The Scot has rarely let his guard down in front of journalists - those who impart judgements on his character to the world - meaning this representation is an unchallenged assumption amongst football fans. However, on Friday morning, ahead of the weekend’s clash with Liverpool, the 70-year-old released a letter which appealed to the hearts of the club’s supporters.
In it, Sir Alex claimed the recent report from the Hillsborough Independent Panel should "wake the conscience" of football fans everywhere and called for “personal hatred” to be put aside when the two teams meet at Anfield on Sunday. The former Aberdeen boss also insisted a rivalry which has reached a concerning intensity must be put in perspective following the recent shocking revelations surrounding the tragic events of April 15 1989.

Though he did not explicitly reference the chants which have plagued these fixtures for many years, the implication was clear for all to see.
The context is apparent; the HIP’s report did not just expose a police cover-up, it humanised the dead. The sick chants which have long echoed around Anfield and Old Trafford cannot survive in that environment, as they seek only to belittle the loss of life - whether referencing Hillsborough or the Munich Air Disaster.
And so the Ferguson letter is a welcome rallying cry not just to his own club's fans, but to those of the opposition. The exchanging of insults which reference the deceased between two clubs who have led the way in English football for so long is mindless; now is the time for it to end.
The timing of the correspondence also has particular gravitas, with the clubs’ rivalry having undoubtedly reached its zenith last year. The enmity appeared to hit new heights following the Anfield edition of the fixture during the 2011-12 campaign, as the start of a grubby, long-running race row between Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra cast a dark shadow over the game.
Every nuance of the Football Association’s findings on the matter and each player’s contribution to the affair was analysed to microscopic level, with disagreements played out on television, radio & social networking website Twitter. Yet, as bizarre as it sounds, at least there was an upside to the row. The problem of racism in football was cast back into public consciousness and efforts to eradicate it from sport and wider society have stepped up since.
However, the added antipathy it brought to this North-West derby simply resulted in the memories of the dead being further stained.
The songs chirped up with added gusto, leading to the invention of the “always the victim, it’s never your fault” chant which was strongly condemned following the Red Devils’ recent win over Wigan. There have been attempts to disguise the ditty as solely based on the Suarez/Evra situation since, though the word ‘always’ betrays the sinister connotations it holds.
Of course, it is perhaps sad that the backlash against Hillsborough chants has only been deemed a worthy cause at the denouement of a 23-year fight for the truth. That those referencing the Munich disaster were not also decried years before hints at the fact that such behaviour had seemingly been deemed reasonable even amongst right-thinking people.
Now though, if football is truly to move on from rivalries built on hatred, then the trivialising of matters which are rooted in tragedy, not tribalism, must end. Sir Alex Ferguson speaking out with such passion is a start to that, a watershed moment in repainting the face of a fixture which has become abhorrent to look at in recent times.
Oh, to hear the thoughts of Sir Matt Busby - a former Liverpool player of some distinction and a survivor of the Munich Air Disaster as United manager - on what the game has become. That two proud cities he once called home have abandoned everything that unites them in order to embrace the needless mocking of the dead is yet another tragedy.
So when Ferguson, a calculated Glaswegian who embodies Busby’s spirit as a winner, allowed observers that rarest glimpse at the humanist which lies beneath, United fans had little choice but to take notice. Though accusations of champagne socialism are often thrown his way, Sir Alex can doubtless identify with the city of Liverpool, its football clubs' working class roots and the struggle many of its residents have faced over the last two decades.
Now it is time for fans of both clubs to show that, even in this sanitised Premier League era, they can also still reflect those near-identical, humble beginnings, built on respect.
Chelsea boss Di Matteo dismisses Gullit criticism of Torres
The Italian has leapt to the defence of his €63 million man after the former Blues boss suggested the striker was not offering enough to the west London side
Sep 21, 2012 8:30:00 PM
By Joe McPhee
Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has claimed he is happy with the contribution of club record signing Fernando Torres, despite recent criticism from former Blues boss Ruud Gullit.
Gullit gave a damning assessment of Torres' input after the midweek Champions League draw with Juventus, insisting that the Spain man must start improving if he is to be a part of the team in the long-term future.
"For me he must do more. It is not good enough," Gullit said as a panelist on Sky Sports. "He has had maybe one shot in the whole match, at times it is like Chelsea are playing with ten men. At the moment he is an enigma, he has to start performing – and quickly.”
Despite the outspoken opinions of the Dutchman, Di Matteo moved quickly to play down suggestions that he was unhappy with Torres' form.
“We’re happy with him," insisted Di Matteo, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the club's game with Stoke. "Even when he doesn’t score he either provides or works hard for the team. There are no issues for us.
"He’s always keeping defenders busy, moving and doing the right stuff. He’s full of confidence and he’s playing well and scoring goals. He hasn’t scored in the last couple of games, but he’s scored before."
It's no secret that Torres has struggled to adapt to life at Stamford Bridge since his big-money move from Liverpool in January 2011.
However, there was real belief the striker had turned a corner in the first games of this season, with some positive link-up play alongside Eden Hazard leading to him netting twice.
"Bringing in others is not in discussion at the moment," Di Matteo added when questioned on strengthening his attacking options. "We are happy with our forward and hopefully [Daniel] Sturridge will be fit soon as well.”
Di Matteo also had to shrug off speculation that his own job might be under threat, after chairman Roman Abramovich was spotted at the club's training ground.
"He actually comes quite often, to be honest," Di Matteo explained. "He likes to be involved and he comes down whenever he can."
"I just have to focus on my job and try to prepare the players and the team to the best for the next game."

Four men arrested during Liverpool - Manchester United match
Merseyside Police also ejected one man for making an offensive gesture in the direction of the Red Devils supporters, but commended the behaviour of the vast majority of fans

Four men were arrested during the match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, Merseyside Police have confirmed.
Following the release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel's findings, both clubs paid tribute to the 96 victims of the tragedy 23 years ago on a poignant day in the north-west, which passed largely without incident.
However, a 22-year-old man from Manchester was arrested inside the stadium on suspicion of breach of the peace and later bound over.
In addition, a 31-year-old man from Knutsford, a 22-year-old man from Doncaster and a 19-year-old man from Manchester were also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, theft and ticket touting and theft respectively. The latter two arrests were made outside the stadium and all three men were later released on bail pending further enquiries.
Following the match, there were reports of unsavoury behaviour and chanting between the two sets of supporters while the Manchester United fans were waiting to be allowed to leave the stadium.
Merseyside Police have subsequently confirmed that a man was ejected from the ground for making an offensive gesture in the direction of the away supporters after the final whistle.
The police also announced, however, that "no arrests were made for chanting and the game passed peacefully with the vast majority of the fans behaving impeccably throughout the game."
Former Germany boss Vogts criticises Podolski attitude The Azerbaijan manager has insisted the 27-year-old attacker does not work hard for his team-mates but believes Arsene Wenger will soon remedy that fault
Sep 24, 2012 8:30:00 PM
By John Christodoulou
Former Germany coach Berti Vogts has criticised Lukas Podolski's attitude for the national team and his former club Koln, but says the striker's professionalism will improve at Arsenal.
The Mannschaft international has scored three goals in six appearances for the Gunners following his summer move from the Bundesliga, helping the north London side remain unbeaten in the Premier League so far.
However, Azerbaijan manager Vogts believes the 27-year-old still has weaknesses which must be ironed out by Arsene Wenger, such as his work-rate.
Regarding Germany's Euro 2012 exit at the hands of Italy, Vogts said: "It is always the defence that gets criticised. But the defence starts with Podolski. When he loses the ball he must start running back once in a while.
"Now at Arsenal, he has a manager under whom he has to work really hard in training. Now he gets educated as a professional."
The 65-year-old continued by describing Podolski as an "extraordinary player" but added: "[He had] too many friends in Koln and I hope they stayed at home."
Chelsea face Asian Champions League winners or Monterrey in Club World Cup
The current kings of Europe will enter the competition to be held in Japan in December at the semi-final stage along with Copa Libertadores holders Corinthians of Brazil

Chelsea will face either Monterrey or the winners of the Asian Champions League in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
The Mexican club qualified for the competition by winning the Concacaf Champions League for North and Central American and Caribbean teams, while the Asian tournament remains at the quarter-final stage.
Monterrey and the Asian Champions League winners will meet in the quarter-finals of the Fifa competition to determine the world's top club, which will be held in Japan over ten days in December, to earn the chance to face the Blues.
Chelsea qualified for the competition by winning the Uefa Champions League, defeating Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena in the final.
Saudi Arabian teams dominate the list of eight contenders still competing for the Asian Champions League. Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli are all still in the tournament.
Sepahan of Iran, Guangzhou Evergrande of China, Adelaide United of Australia, Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan and Ulsan Hyundai of Japan also remain in contention.
In the other side of the draw, the winners of the J.League - Japan's top flight - will qualify as hosts and face Auckland City, who won the OFC Champions League in Oceania, in a play-off.
The winners of that match will face the AFC Champions League winners of Africa, with that tournament currently at the semi-final stage, in the quarter-final. The victors there will go on to face Corinthians, winners of the Copa Libertadores in South America, in the semi-final.
The African teams still in contention for a place in Japan are Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Esperance of Tunisia, Sunshine Stars of Nigeria and Al-Ahly of Egypt.
Arsenal midfielder Frimpong embarrassed after car breaks down
The midfielder said it was the most embarrassing day of his life after he ran out of petrol in the "middle of nowhere"
Sep 24, 2012 7:00:00 PM
By John Stammers
Emmanuel Frimpong of Arsenal is on the road to recovery after anterior cruciate ligament damage put him out of action for the majority of last season, and the start of this one.
But unfortunately for the Gunners man, he isn't going anywhere fast.
The notorious tweeter, who returned to full training recently, was caught red-faced as he got stuck in the "middle of nowhere" after running out of petrol on Monday.
The midfielder posted the above picture of his stranded car, while adding this message: "This has to 2 the most embarassin day of my life my car just broke down in the middle of nowhere.#Nodiesel Times r hard."
Not very 'DENCH', eh Mr.Frimpong? And it's not the first time the Gunners player has been unimpressive when manning a vehicle.
He posted a very sluggish time of 1:45:30s in the Puma race off challenge series, where various sporting stars try to match Nico Rosberg's Monza lap time of 1:21:05s in a Formula1 simulator, with Cesc Fabregas and Bacary Sagna both over 10 seconds quicker than him.
What next for Gunners fans? Maybe Jack Wilshere, also recently back into training, will leave his radio on all night and run out of battery. Best stick to public transport, lads.

IF THE SHIRT FITS ... Theo Walcott is desperate to stay with his beloved Arsenal
By CHARLIE WYETT
Last Updated: 25th September 2012
THEO WALCOTT admits he is desperate to stay at Arsenal and sign a new contract.
The England star is in the final year of his deal but wants to commit his future to the club and boss Arsene Wenger.
Walcott turned down a £75,000-a-week offer from the club in August and Wenger has warned he wants the situation resolved within two months.
Walcott, a target for Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the last week of the transfer window, said: “I have always wanted to stay. Hopefully, something can be agreed.
“But it takes time, it is one of these things that is not going to happen overnight. I’ve got to be patient.
“This summer there were other opportunities to go, so if it was about money I would have gone.
“If something isn’t sorted out I will be disappointed, I can’t lie. It would be a shame but you just have to move on and accept it.
“Hopefully, it won’t come to that. I love the club, I love playing for the manager, for the team and we have made some great signings.”
Walcott, 23, will be free to talk to other clubs in January.
He added: “I don’t want to be thinking about that because the week I had in the last week of the transfer market was horrible.”
Suarez is no cheat! Gerrard and Johnson leap to the defence of Liverpool team-mate
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 22:18 GMT, 24 September 2012 | UPDATED: 22:18 GMT, 24 September 2012
Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson have sprung to the defence of Luis Suarez and urged referees not to judge the striker on the reputation he has gained for diving. The Uruguay international, who was booked the previous week at Sunderland for such an offence, could have had a penalty in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United after a tackle by Jonny Evans. However, his appeals were turned down by referee Mark Halsey and both Gerrard and Johnson believe the 25-year-old is suffering from the label given to him during a difficult period last season.
Unlucky? Suarez was not awarded a penalty after this challenge by Jonny Evans on Sunday
'I think even when Luis does get blatant penalties now he doesn't get them,' said Gerrard. 'It is down to referees to not judge him and give what they see - if it's not a penalty don't give him one but if it's clear give it. 'He was booked at Sunderland but against United it was a penalty.'
Johnson echoed the sentiments of his captain by adding: 'Everyone has to do their job: they have to forget about who they are looking at and make their decisions and not let anything from the past affect their decision. 'They have to call the shots at the time, regardless of who it is.' Johnson found himself on the receiving end when he conceded the match-winning spot-kick at Anfield after Antonio Valencia went down in the area. The England right-back was fuming as he claimed he did not touch the Ecuadorian, whom he accused of cheating.
Penalty: Johnson (right) brings down Antonio Valencia
'I've watched it 50 times - not that I needed to - because it wasn't a penalty, I didn't touch him, I have collided with Pepe (Reina),' said the England international. 'Reputations go in front of people at times and because Valencia is not a known diver that is why he got the decision. 'I almost guarantee if it was exactly the same situation and it was Luis and not Valencia then it wouldn't be a penalty. 'It is cheating at the end of the day, that's what people call it. 'You can't describe [the feeling] but you don't expect people to do that - they are better than that. 'This is one the best leagues in the world and you've got someone doing that. 'I know it is difficult for the referee when we are sprinting as fast as we can but in the big games they are the differences and we expect the referees to make the right decisions.
Frustrated: Liverpool are yet to win in the Premier League this season
'We are working as hard as we can to win the game and to have that taken away like that... I can't explain it. 'The referee said to me he had to give it so he obviously thought I had touched him. It is frustrating because I've not touched him.' Manager Brendan Rodgers felt referees had to get wiser and not be fooled by acts of simulation, while at the same time recognising that when people go down in the area it is not automatically a penalty or a dive.
'You see it in the modern game, across the board, a number of players go to ground too easily and they get their rewards sometimes,' he said. 'Antonio Valencia has gone to ground and got a penalty for it with near-enough no contact. 'If you look at Luis last week away at Sunderland he goes down, there is contact but he gets booked for it then yesterday he didn't get it. To kick this off, let me present you with some raw data on our prime contenders for this thrilling race. This is both managers' first season with their respective sides and neither has gotten off to a particularly bright start. In the red corner of this globally manager-feared contest, we have Brendan Rodgers, who has achieved a measly 2 points from 4 games, his new side scoring just 3 goals and conceding 8, leaving them in 17th place (just above the relegation zone) with -5 goal difference. In the white corner, we have Andre Villas-Boas, with a slightly better 5 points from 4 games, his side scoring 6 goals and conceding 5 and they sit at 10th place with +1 goal difference. Current Europa League Betting odds have both teams amongst the favourites to win outright, with Liverpool at 10/1 and Tottenham at 12/1.
Neither manager has really breezed through these first four games, although Tottenham's first win of the season over newly-promoted Reading last night gives their campaign start a slightly more respectable look. However, it must be said that Liverpool have had significantly tougher fixtures, including matches against the likes of reigning champions Manchester City and an in-form Arsenal. Spurs' toughest fixture by far was their opening game against Newcastle, a match they lost.
Now that we've had a brief look at the stats of the first 4 games, let's talk about a few positives and negatives each manager brings to the club.
For starters, neither manager is at all experienced, in age or in Premier League managing time. Rodgers has a slight edge here at age 39 and having been at the helm for the entirety of Swansea's excellent début in the English top flight. Villas-Boas is little more than a kid by managerial standards and at 34 he is the youngest current Premiership manager. His 9 month spell at Chelsea off the back of a sensational unbeaten run at Porto ended very badly, with him losing his job to current Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo. Against some of the more experienced top-level managers, they may struggle to cope with tricks the old dogs have picked up over the years (Ferguson's infamous mind games spring to mind rather quickly). AVB in particular here has not proven himself well when it comes to dealing with pressure, becoming used to having little at Porto and his first real high-pressure challenges during his time at Chelsea ended in absolute disaster.
Two words: Transfer dealings. This may well have been the most difficult aspect of each manager's new job at their respective clubs, seeing as they were both thrown in at the deep end with concrete blocks tied round their ankles. Metaphorically, of course. Rodgers had to deal with a distinct lack of transfer funds (Reds fans, you can go ahead and blame 'King Kenny' for that one, he certainly spent like a king... 20 million for Jordan Henderson... good grief) and thus was only able to bring in minor reinforcements, famously (and no doubt frustratingly) missing out on Clint Dempsey, who – funnily enough – went to our contender in the white corner. Dempsey was meant to be the replacement for surplus-to-requirements England man Andy Carroll. However, loaning him out without bringing in any actual replacement has left Liverpool with little or no options upfront and Rogers has admitted this bit of transfer business to be a mistake. January recall maybe? All this coupled with the lack of transfer deadline day action had Liverpool fans in uproar.
AVB had his own transfer problems, having his hands tied in losing Modric and then making the utterly mind-boggling move of opting to sell his best attacking midfielder in Van der Vaart. He has arguably done a decent job in replacing them, bringing in Dembele, Sigurdsson and Adebayor alongside the aforementioned Dempsey. But we can't end on a happy note – oh no. To top it all off the young Portuguese caused himself many months of consistent migraine with this Hugo Lloris/Brad Friedel business and despite the former being an unquestionably quality signing, Villas-Boas seems to have not the slightest idea how to deal with Friedel's top form and Lloris' top quality. His decision to keep the American between the sticks may have been the right one, but the hesitation with which he went about it can only breed doubt amongst fans and players alike.
Finally, there is the style of play and expectations of the respective teams. Liverpool was a side that played attractive passing football once upon a time, but since then they have become a team known for hoofing the ball forward unnecessarily. For three years running now, Liverpool have missed out on Champions League football by failing to make the top four. Yet, expectations have not significantly lowered and the task Rodgers has set out to do – bring good quality football back to the Reds and eventually get them back competing among Europe's elite – is one that has become very difficult, but in the long run, could hugely benefit the club and bring a sense of stability that the red half of Merseyside haven't had for a long time. Villas-Boas, on the other hand, has joined a club that has consistently made the top four in recent seasons and while you could argue that that constitutes more pressure, it is a pressure his team have become accustomed to. Also, AVB has more players suited to his high-line, constant pressure style of football than Rodgers has at Anfield that are suited to his tiki-taka style.
My personal opinion is that despite AVB's statistically better start to the campaign, Brendan Rodgers' clear sense of purpose and ability to blame unfortunate circumstances will keep him in his job longer than AVB, as I can only see him crumbling under the greater pressures sure to come later in the season.
With his stables just a few miles away from the Britannia Stadium, Michael Owen will be able to indulge his love of horse racing as well as a bit of football following his move to Stoke this summer. However, manager Tony Pulis will be hoping the 32-year-old has his mind firmly set on bagging goals for the Potters rather than the nag’s this season.
If Owen were a horse he would likely have been sent to the knacker’s yard a long time ago due to his injury prone nature, but the former England favourite has stated he wishes to prove he can 'stand the rigours of a full season' throughout his 12 month pay-per-play contract with Stoke.
Whilst the odds of him picking up another Premier League winners medal are steep having left his bench warming role at United, the chances of him playing regular football are far more favourable at Stoke. That is if he manages to stay free of injury, of course.
Though many doubt that Owen will be able to recapture the kind of form that won him the Ballon d’Or in 2001, his former England and Liverpool strike partner Emile Heskey has spoken of his belief that there is still a future for him in the Premiership.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Heskey stated: 'I definitely think he’s got a lot still to give. You know everyone is going to look at your injuries and that kind of thing but Michael will get as many goals as anyone else and he’s proving that. The main thing is proving that he can stay fit. When you talk about goals and ability then he’s up there with the best of them. I don’t think Roy Hodgson should ignore him either.
'There is a new crop of lads coming up but they can learn from what Michael has done, being around people like Michael will always help. Everyone knew about Michael from the age of 16 and the ability that he had and he was able to deal with that pressure so he has got a lot to give back too.'
Owen will be hoping for his first Premier League start for his new club when Stoke face Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, although he may have to settle for a place on the bench until he is able to regain his match fitness.
From mascot to Arsenal's starting XI: Yennaris proves football dreams can come true
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 15:57 GMT, 25 September 2012 | UPDATED: 16:07 GMT, 25 September 2012
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Nico Yennaris' development shows sometimes 'dreams do come true' as the former Gunners mascot prepares to line up against Coventry in the Capital One Cup. The 19-year-old midfielder will be part of a mixed Arsenal squad for the visit of the npower League One side. The Sky Blues have fallen on hard times in recent seasons, but were established members of the top flight when Leytonstone-born Yennaris was a proud mascot aged seven for a game at Highbury in September 2000.
Young Gunner: Yennaris was the Arsenal mascot back in 2000
The youngster, whose father is a Greek Cypriot and mother Chinese, came through the Arsenal Academy and signed professional terms in July 2010, making his senior debut in the League Cup against Bolton last October before spending a brief loan spell with Notts County. Wenger has been impressed with the midfielder's progress, with Yennaris having also made a substitute appearance in the Barclays Premier League against Manchester United in January.
'He has a good chance to be on the pitch on Wednesday night, so that is a fantastic story,' Wenger said on Arsenal Player. 'Dreams do come true sometimes when you really want it and have been lucky as well. 'First of all you must really want it and Nico is one of these guys who has that. 'He is ready to give himself a chance with full commitment. Nico is a fantastic player, but also has an excellent attitude - his is a good example to follow for all of the fans who will turn up on Wednesday night.'
As well as giving youngsters like Hector Bellerin, Kris Olsson, Serge Gnabry, Craig Eastmond and Ignasi Miquel the chance of some first-team action, Wenger will also give some of his fringe players the opportunity to impress.
Biding his time: Yennaris is the latest to come through the Arsenal ranks
Such is the current depth of Wenger's squad, which has made an unbeaten start to the new season following Sunday's 1-1 draw at Manchester City, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott have struggled to make an impact, but should start. Brazil international Andre Santos and Swiss defender Johan Djourou are also expected to come into the side. French striker Olivier Giroud has yet to find the net since his summer move from Montpellier, so will have a great opportunity to break that duck.Meanwhile, combative midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong may be in contention for the squad after recovering fitness from a serious knee injury.
Paid his dues: Yennaris will be hoping to kick rather than inflate the footballs on Wednesday night
HE'S RAD ... Chelsea are lining up a bid for Falcao
Roman £45m Falcao bid
Exclusive By MARK IRWIN
Published: 1 hr ago
CHELSEA are plotting a £45million swoop for Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao.
Preliminary discussions have already taken place about a January move for the Atletico Madrid goal machine.
And Blues owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light to a formal bid after watching Falcao destroy his team in last month’s UEFA Super Cup.
The European champions now believe they cannot achieve their ambitions with Fernando Torres as their only front-line striker.
And they are already holding internal talks to work out the best way of being first in the queue for Falcao when the transfer window reopens in January.
A Chelsea source admitted: “The groundwork is already being done for Falcao.
“The owner wants everything in place now so a deal can be done before any other club can make a counter-offer.”
Falcao, 26, has scored an astonishing 115 goals in just three years in European football, including a Monaco hat-trick against Chelsea in the Super Cup.
Atletico paid £32million to sign him from Porto only last summer, but up to half of that fee is believed to have been provided by a third party investment fund which includes the player’s representative Jorge Mendes.

CCTV footage is being handed to them and confirms the thefts were carried out by a lone intruder not connected with the training ground site.

Although Chelsea insist the thefts are not an inside job, police have yet to make an arrest after they were called in last week. This is the first time police have been called to the training ground about alleged thefts, but there have been various disturbing reports involving players’ personal effects this year.
