QPR 1 West Ham 2: Jarvis and Vaz Te strike to sink 10-man Rangers
By LAURA WILLIAMSON
PUBLISHED: 20:59 GMT, 1 October 2012 | UPDATED: 00:05 GMT, 2 October 2012
Mark Hughes’s side need to get back to basics. Two points from their first six games was certainly not what was hoped for after such heavy investment over the summer, even if substitute Adel Taarabt’s sensational goal provided a glimpse of this side’s potential. Matt Jarvis and Ricardo Vaz Te scored for West Ham before Taarabt’s brilliant individual goal and fellow substitute Samba Diakite was sent off for a second bookable offence. West Ham picked up eight bookings but managed to keep 11 players on the pitch, although the flurry of yellow cards will cost them a £25,000 fine.
Net result: Jarvis's header gave West Ham an early lead at Loftus Road
Match facts
QPR: Julio Cesar, Hill, Nelsen,Mbia, Onuoha (Hoilett 84), Wright-Phillips (Taarabt 56), Granero, Faurlin, Park (Diakite 55), Zamora, Cisse. Subs not used: Green, Mackie, Ephraim, Ehmer. Sent off: Diakite (75).
A first Premier League away win since March 2011 will compensate for the financial burden. Midfielders Mark Noble, Mohamed Diame and Kevin Nolan were excellent, and Andy Carroll impressed in front of England manager Roy Hodgson during his 20-minute cameo.Sam Allardyce said he had no problem with Hodgson including Carroll in his squad to face San Marino and Poland in England’s World Cup qualifiers, but the West Ham boss warned that the striker is ‘woefully, woefully short of match practice’ after missing a month with a hamstring injury.
Allardyce added: ‘I’m sure Roy will deal with it in the right way. England will be sensible. Andy held the ball up and we started creating more chances. I’m delighted. We gave QPR a torrid time.’West Ham are up to seventh place, but Rangers stay rooted to the bottom of the Barclays Premier League. Only Southampton have conceded more goals this season and it took Hughes less than three minutes last night to fold his arms and assume the stern, furrowed brow we have seen so often since he took over at Loftus Road.A clean sheet in their last home game against Chelsea and an encouraging display in a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham had suggested signs of improvement, but QPR reverted to playing like a collection of individuals as West Ham denied them time and space.
Double your money: Vaz Te fired home from close range to extend the Hammers' lead
This always promised to be a challenge for a team missing four defenders — Anton Ferdinand, Jose Bosingwa, Fabio and Armand Traore — but QPR were undone with alarming ease.Vaz Te and Nolan were allowed to exchange passes as West Ham attacked down the right, before Jarvis pounced on Nolan’s mis-hit shot at the far post. The summer signing from Wolves could scarcely believe his luck as Julio Cesar stayed rooted to his line and Jarvis drifted in, unmarked, to open his Premier League account with the simplest of headers.
Pick that one out: Taarabt scored a stunning long range effort
Shaun Wright-Phillips carved out a good chance down the right and Djibril Cisse saw a fierce shot blocked and a scissor kick fly just over the bar. But there was little composure about QPR’s play. The crowd’s boos of frustration grew louder when they conceded a second goal after 34 minutes. James Tomkins, on for Winston Reid who had received an elbow in the face from his own goalkeeper, recycled the ball after a scrappy goalmouth scramble. The defender picked out Vaz Te — again at the far post — and his left-foot shot took a heavy deflection to beat Cesar.
Look who's back: Carroll made a welcome return after an injury lay-off
QPR had little choice but to attack in the second half, with the crowd making clear their desire to see Taarabt. He scored within a minute of casually jogging on to the pitch in full-length sleeves and black gloves, picking up the ball on the left and curling it into the top right-hand corner. The Moroccan’s introduction energised QPR, who got the ball forward with more purpose and less haste. Cisse again caused problems, sprinting clear before seeing a right-foot shot cannon into Jaaskelainen, but it was West Ham who had the best chance to score again. Nolan played a beautiful ball through to Cole, who pulled his shot horribly wide.Cue the introduction of Carroll, who brought down a long ball before shooting with his left foot and then his right, as West Ham saw out six minutes of stoppage time.
Flat out: Winston Reid's match was cut short after a collision with his goalkeeper
Hughes said: ‘Tonight was a big opportunity for us to get three points and we haven’t taken it. We’ve had a big investment in the club and we’re looking to improve this year — and we will. ‘But until we get results on the board, everything’s up for debate and the focus starts to come on the club as a whole. If we start winning matches then it goes away.’
Worrying times: QPR remain winless this season despite Hughes' spending this summer

No England call-up for ageing Ferdinand, suggests Neville despite show of support
By MATT LAWTON PUBLISHED: 21:10 GMT, 1 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:05 GMT, 1 October 2012
Exile: Ferdinand has not yet been called up by Roy Hodgson
Gary Neville strongly hinted on Monday night that Rio Ferdinand will be left out of the England squad this week. Manager Roy Hodgson has never picked Ferdinand, but John Terry’s retirement from international football and a poor defensive show against Ukraine last month have highlighted the need for a centre half of the 33-year-old Manchester United man’s quality and experience.
Speaking on television on Monday night, Neville, a coach with England, defended his former team-mate against criticism after United’s loss to Tottenham on Saturday. Neville said Ferdinand had 'lost a yard of pace' but was 'still quicker than Steve Bruce, Tony Adams and John Terry'.
Yet he hinted Ferdinand would not be selected for the World Cup double-header against San Marino and Poland. Neville said: 'He has not really been playing for England for the last two years. Hodgson is looking to the World Cup in 2014. Rio is a class player but by the World Cup he will be 35.
'Roy has said he is not going to take 34- or 35-year-olds, senior internationals with 70 or 80 caps, to sit in the stand. I’ve seen in previous squads how divisive that can be.'
Ageing: Ferdinand will be 35 at the next World Cup
Stop diving then! Fergie shrugs off Aguero claims that foreign players are harshly treated
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 17:27 GMT, 1 October 2012 | UPDATED: 18:43 GMT, 1 October 2012
Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted foreign players only have themselves to blame if they are not treated fairly by Premier League referees. After Manchester City failed to get what he believed were two cast-iron spot-kicks at Fulham on Saturday, Sergio Aguero said he felt English players had 'privileges' which were not available to outsiders. Ahead of Manchester United's Champions League encounter with Romanian champions CFR Cluj, it was a debate Ferguson did not want to enter.
Retort: Ferguson claimed that foreign players only have themselves to blame
However, the Scot suggested the Premier League's foreign legion are the architects of their own downfall. 'As a subject it is not worth going down because we have known for quite a few years there are plenty of players diving and, you have to say, particularly foreign players,' said the United boss. Ferguson was grumbling at the treatment of Nani at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Portugal winger went down under a first-half challenge from Jan Vertonghen, only for referee Chris Foy to wave away the spot-kick claims.
Outburst: Aguero says foreign players are treated harshly in the Premier League
Three days on, Ferguson stands by his belief it was a penalty. And he was happy to excuse Nani of any accusation of diving.'Nani is not the type to dive,' said Ferguson. 'He has never been that type of player. 'It was a penalty kick on Saturday. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. 'From the referee's position it was difficult because there were plenty of bodies in front of him. The linesman could have helped him but he didn't.'
Gearing up: United trained on Monday morning before heading to Romania
No sooner had United landed in Transylvania than Ferguson ordered his side to start baring their teeth. United's stuttering opening to the new season caught up with them at Old Trafford on Saturday against a speedy and durable Tottenham team. While praising United's second-half performance, Ferguson was furious with what went on before the break. It followed on from similar lacklustre displays earlier in the season, particularly at Southampton and Liverpool.
Euro mission: Wayne Rooney (left) and Rio Ferdinand (right) set off from Manchester airport
And Ferguson has vowed it will not continue on Tuesday night. 'We were well off the pace of the game. I don't think we won a tackle in the first half,' said the United boss. 'The second half was probably our best performance of the season. 'When you consider the first half against Southampton, the first half Liverpool and first half on Saturday, we have some work to do. 'You have to be concerned losing goals the way we did.
Ruled out: Carrick (right) is suffering from illness
'It's not planned but I think it will be the last (bad performance).' Ferguson confirmed Michael Carrick will miss Tuesday's encounter due to illness. Carrick did not train at Carrington on Monday morning and was also absent when United left Manchester at lunchtime. But rather than being rested, Ferguson confirmed the England man was not well enough to be considered.'Michael did not report today. He is in bed with a virus,' said Ferguson.
Depleted: Ferguson also revealed that Giggs is unwell
The United boss also confirmed veteran wide-man Ryan Giggs left training on Monday morning after also feeling unwell, while Paul Scholes was not considered due to the exertion of completing the full 90 minutes in Saturday's 3-2 home defeat by Tottenham. 'Ryan had a bit of a virus this morning,' said Ferguson. 'He was feeling a bit rough so we sent him home. 'Paul Scholes played ever so well on Saturday but he is 37 now and we couldn't expect him to play three days later at his age.'

Mind your own business! Deschamps hits out at Wenger over Diaby selection
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 14:04 GMT, 4 October 2012 | UPDATED: 14:04 GMT, 4 October 2012
Didier Deschamps gave Arsene Wenger a stern reminder that he was the only France manager after the Arsenal boss said Abou Diaby should not have been picked for previous international matches. Diaby was ruled out of action for three weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League last Saturday. And Wenger hit out at the French team's decision to field Diaby in both of their last World Cup qualifiers just a few days apart.
Not happy: Didier Deschamps delivered a stern rebuttal to Arsene Wenger
But Deschamps responded angrilly today as he named his squad for the next round of games, against Japan in a friendly and Spain in a qualifier. He said: 'I want to remind him that I am the only one to decide who will be picked and how long those who are picked will play. There is only one to decide and it's me.'
Meanwhile, Samir Nasri's international exile has continued after he failed to win a recall to the squad. Manchester City playmaker Nasri has completed a three-match ban imposed by the French Football Federation for his conduct at the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.
Hatem Ben Arfa, another to have been disciplined over the summer, was also left out despite performing well for Newcastle recently with Deschamps instead including Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko and Lassana Diarra, who recently moved to Anzhi Makhachkala from Real Madrid.
Midfielder Rio Mavuba is injured but Montpellier full-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is included even though he is suspended for the clash with world and European champions Spain on October 16 at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

'We had to talk with each other because it was not the way we respect the shirt of Manchester United. We don't want another wake-up call.'We know what happened last year. He's better than Walcott AND Oxlade-Chamberlain! Holloway warns Ince will cost United
By RICHARD GIBSON PUBLISHED: 21:30 GMT, 3 October 2012 | UPDATED: 09:47 GMT, 4 October 2012
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has warned Manchester United that they will not get top scorer Thomas Ince on the cheap, claiming he is better than Arsenal's Theo Walcott .Ince, 20, has struck six goals in the Championship and made his England Under-21 debut this season, form that has alerted Sir Alex Ferguson among others. However, Holloway, who believes the forward can emulate his father Paul by playing for United and England, insists he will not let Ince go easily.
Wanted: Manchester United are interested in Blackpool starlet Ince
'I don’t think the other two flying wingers [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott] are any better than him,' said Holloway. 'It is because they play for Arsenal. Incey has been creating and scoring. In other words, if Arsene Wenger bought him, he’d be good enough to start for England.'I can't keep anybody. I am working with them to get them to a Man United or Arsenal.'That's what I want to do for these boys. I have got to keep turning them out and that's how it is. If we are not successful this year, do I want to stand in his way? Probably not. But we deserve a fair amount of money for him.' The £6million-rated Ince has thrived since quitting Liverpool for Bloomfield Road 14 months ago.
Making his move: Sir Alex Ferguson (left) is eyeing up Ince
'What held him back was he went to a club that had an academy and there was no way through. He got fed up with that so he came and learnt his trade,' explained Holloway.'God knows what he could do with one of their (Liverpool) shirts on now.' He added: 'He has been absolutely unplayable for us and has been outstanding in such a short period of time,' he said. 'Lord knows what he could do with an England shirt on his back now. His end product is absolutely top, top drawer.
Wigan manager Martinez handed £10,000 fine for Old Trafford outburst

Furious: Martinez was disappointed with the officials at Old Trafford
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has been fined £10,000 after admitting a charge of misconduct in relation to comments made after his side's game against Manchester United last month, the Football Association have confirmed.A statement on the FA website read: 'The charge was in relation to a breach of FA Rule E3 concerning media comments which implied that the match referee and/or match officials in general are motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute.'
Martinez, who had requested a personal hearing, was also warned as to his future conduct.'The Spaniard was frustrated after his side's 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford, during which England striker Danny Welbeck was awarded a controversial penalty by referee Michael Oliver following what seemed to be minimal contact from Ali Al Habsi.Speaking to reporters after the match, Martinez said: 'You know what he is trying to do. I have come to United three times before and for whatever reason we don't seem to be measured in the same manner as the team at home.'Today the penalty is as bad a decision as you are going to see in the Premier League.'In many ways, you feel as though you are fighting against a mountain.'

Is that you, Emile? Old footage emerges of 11-year-old Heskey... on the Rod Hull Show
By ADAM SHERGOLD PUBLISHED: 13:52 GMT, 3 October 2012 | UPDATED: 16:19 GMT, 3 October 2012
Whenever you blow the dust off that old box of VHS tapes in the attic, there's usually something worth watching. But nothing quite compares to unearthing footage of an 11-year-old Emile Heskey appearing on an episode of the Rod Hull and Emu Show in 1988 (words I never thought I'd see in the same sentence). This edition of the children's TV show sees Emile - or as he is mispronounced throughout, Emily - leading the 8th Leicester Boys Brigade to victory in an obstacle course against some challengers from Nottingham.
Pretty in pink: A very colourful Rod Hull introduces the 8th Leicester Boys Brigade, with Heskey in the middle
Staying on his feet: Emile takes on the swinging tyres, stepping rather than diving through
The gangly young Emile struggles a bit with the swinging tyres - choosing to stay on his feet unlike some of the other 'diving' children - but makes light work of the bridge and the rope climb. He then sprints back to the finish line - showing the pace that often deserted him in his professional career - to be greeted by Hull wearing a fluorescent pink suit.
Top Hat: Emile grabs the hat from the top of the pole before running back to complete the course
The boy done good: Hull hugs Emile at the end of the race
Fortunately, Heskey is spared a battering by the emu, which is nowhere to be seen in the clip and he walks away with a cheque for £100 for the local bible society. Good work.
Liverpool fans back resignation of top Hillsborough officer who criticised fans after tragedy
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 20:29 GMT, 4 October 2012 | UPDATED: 21:09 GMT, 4 October 2012
Resigned: Sir Norman Bettison
The families of Hillsborough victims have welcomed the resignation of a top police officer who criticised Liverpool fans in the wake of the tragedy.Sir Norman Bettison, then a South Yorkshire Police chief inspector, sparked fury in 1989 when he said supporters made policing 'harder than it needed to be'. Now the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, he announced he will step down in March next year amid an investigation by the police watchdog.Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, said: 'Obviously I'm very, very pleased. I'm absolutely delighted that he's going.'But then he'll be going on his full pension, and I'd like to know the full reasons why he's choosing to retire as soon as this.'
A complaint was made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) that Bettison - who was off duty on April 15 1989 and went to the match in Sheffield as a spectator - had supplied misleading information after the disaster. The IPCC also said there was a second element to the referral, which related to a statement the officer made last month following the report of the Hillsborough Independent Panel.Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James died in the tragedy, said: 'Why didn't he stay, then, until the IPCC came out with their investigation?'But he's decided to leave. I'm not arguing against it, because I'm thrilled that he is going, but if he's got nothing to hide, why is he retiring?
Support: Liverpool fans hold up a mosiac spelling out 'justice' and 'the truth' after report findings
'The man has got something to worry about.'There were calls for Bettison to resign after his comments about the behaviour of Liverpool fans in 1989, but he responded with an apology and said his role was never to 'besmirch' the fans and added that the Liverpool supporters were in no way to blame for the disaster.Later, he was involved in an internal inquiry held by the force in the aftermath of the tragedy. He has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the disaster.
Questions about Bettison's role in the investigation of the tragedy have dogged him as he has risen through the higher ranks of the police - most notably when there were protests from the families of those who died when he became Chief Constable of Merseyside in 1998.Bettison said in a statement: 'Recent weeks have caused me to reflect on what is best for the future of policing in West Yorkshire and I have now decided to set a firm date for my retirement of 31 March 2013.'In a message posted on the West Yorkshire Police website, Bettison said he hoped his departure would assist the IPCC in its inquiry.
Tragic: Liverpool fans try to get away from the crush
'I hope it will enable the Independent Police Complaints Commission to fully investigate allegations that have been raised about my integrity. They need to be fairly and fully investigated and I welcome this independent and formal scrutiny,' he said. The damning report on the Hillsborough disaster laid bare a shocking cover-up which attempted to shift the blame on to its 96 victims. The inquiry found that 164 police statements were altered, 116 of them to remove or alter 'unfavourable' comments about the policing of the match and the unfolding disaster.
Bettison previously defended his role in the aftermath of the tragedy, saying: 'I never altered a statement nor asked for one to be altered.'He also said: 'I really welcome the disclosure of all the facts that can be known about the Hillsborough tragedy because I have absolutely nothing to hide.'Anne Williams, whose 15-year-old son Kevin died on the Leppings Lane terrace, said the findings of the recent report left Sir Norman with no choice but to retire. She said: 'I think the whole lot of them who have been involved for these 23 years should all go for the hurt that they have caused us for 23 years.
"I don't think he would have retired if it wasn't for the Hillsborough report.'Trevor Hicks, who lost his two daughters, 19-year-old Sarah and 15-year-old Victoria, told ITV News: 'I'm glad he's realised his position is untenable. However, I'm determined that he does not escape his just desserts and I will make sure he's stripped of his knighthood.'He should leave with nothing, like he tried to leave the families.'

Ferguson praises De Gea but says he will continue to rotate keepers at United
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 23:03 GMT, 5 October 2012 | UPDATED: 23:03 GMT, 5 October 2012
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed by David de Gea's midweek performance but will continue rotating his goalkeepers for the immediate future. De Gea, who joined United for a reported £18.9million last year, was dropped after the opening two Barclays Premier League games of the season. The Spaniard has returned in the Champions League and Capital One Cup but has lost his number one status with Anders Lindegaard taking over for the last four league matches.
Good display: Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with David de Gea in midweek
Ferguson must now decide whether to retain De Gea, 21, after he played at Cluj on Tuesday or switch back to Dane Lindegaard, 28, for Sunday's Barclays Premier League trip to Newcastle. Ferguson said: 'He (De Gea) was excellent, he is an outstanding goalkeeper, the young lad, he is getting better all the time. 'I don't know whether I should play him on Sunday or not but the way we have been doing it in the last few weeks has worked quite well for us.
Carry on rotating: Anders Lindegaard looks set to be selected for the game against Newcastle
'Everybody wants to play, goalkeepers are no different, but the way I look at it at the moment is getting the two of them experience will help me in the long term.
'Obviously at some stage one of them will take over if he shows a real consistency in top-level performance and he has shown a maturity.'At the moment neither of them have got that big-game experience. They will get that in time.'Ferguson seems at ease with the fact he currently does not have a first-choice goalkeeper and he feels both players have plenty of time to establish themselves.
Former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was 40 when he retired in 2011 and Ferguson has pointed to other examples of players enjoying long careers. He said: 'Peter Schmeichel was 27 when he joined us. Everyone was talking about a young goalkeeper joining us but he was 27, and he gave us eight great years.'Goalkeepers can play until their late 30s quite easily, look at Brad Friedel for instance, and Peter Shilton played in the 1990 World Cup and I think he was 40. 'Goalkeepers can last longer. If they look after themselves even better, but as long as they keep their agility and their speed they can play to a good age.'
Di Matteo fears Torres burnout but will start striker in clash with Norwich
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 17:34 GMT, 5 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:34 GMT, 5 October 2012
Roberto Di Matteo admitted Fernando Torres may be at risk of burnout as he prepares to ask the striker to lead the line for Chelsea on Saturday.Torres looks set to maintain his record of starting every one of the European champions’ games this season when they take on Norwich in the Barclays Premier League. The match is Chelsea’s seventh in just 21 days, a punishing schedule that has seen manager Di Matteo take every opportunity to rotate his squad.
Starting again: Fernando Torres is likely to start against Norwich despite his manager's fears over burnout
He almost certainly would have rested Torres during the past three weeks but for an injury to Daniel Sturridge, who is the club’s only other recognised senior striker. And Di Matteo admitted it was something he might need to address after Torres returns from the upcoming international break.Asked if burnout was a concern, he said: 'It’s our seventh game tomorrow in 21 days and he’s in good shape, he’s very fit.'But, certainly, it’s something we have to look at.'The benefits of players being given time off have been laid bare by Juan Mata’s scintillating form since his return from a fortnight off.The winger’s holiday included the last international break, with Spain agreeing not to pick him at the time.
He was also left out of his country’s squad today for this month’s World Cup qualifying double-header against Belarus and France but there was no such respite for Torres, with Di Matteo confirming a similar request was 'not on the agenda at the moment'.Other players who feature at the top of the minutes-played list for Chelsea this season are Ashley Cole, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic.'Every player’s different,' Di Matteo said.'With Mata, it was because of the busy schedule he’s had over the summer.'Some of the other players have had a rest because they were not involved the Euros or after the Euros.'That’s why I need to look at every individual as a player and decide.'But, at the moment, there are no breaks for anyone on the agenda.'
Di Matteo was delighted with Mata’s response to his own break, which has seen him rack up four goals and four assists in his last four games.'It was just common sense to give him a break and the way he’s performing suggests that it was very welcome by his body and mind,' Di Matteo added.'Juan Mata is a very intelligent man and I talked to him about this idea, and he bought into it and he saw the benefits of it.'Juan has really raised the bar again after this break.'But if you look at how he played last season, he had a fantastic first season in the English Premier League.'

That saw Mata crowned Chelsea’s Player of the Year and asked if he could top his performances from last term, Di Matteo added: 'I hope so.'Chelsea head into the weekend three points clear at the top of the table but Di Matteo played down the psychological impact maintaining or extending that gap could have on their rivals.'It’s too early,' he said.'We’re only six games into the league.'There are so many more games to play, so I think it’s too early to give a judgement on the table now.'
Di Matteo was more concerned about his own side and ensuring they kept they avoided a repeat of their last performance before an international break, their 4-1 UEFA Super Cup thrashing by Atletico Madrid. He added: 'It’s a fact that every time you play in the league after a Champions League game, you need to mentally focus on that again.'There’s an international break coming up as well and the last game before an international break for us was not good.'It’s the mental aspect of it.'Complacency might come into it but it’s more focusing back into the league.'

Fresh handshake snub! Wenger bans them after virus at Arsenal training

Arsene Wenger has stopped handshakes among his players and disinfected Arsenal's training ground to wipe out a virus which is spreading through the camp. Per Mertesacker is the fourth player to be struck down recently by a coughing and sickness bug and faces a test to be fit for Saturday evening's game at West Ham. Theo Walcott became ill after returning from international duty in Moldova, when the England squad used Arsenal's facilities.

Thomas Vermaelen and Francis Coquelin have also missed games and some staff have fallen ill. Wenger has ordered the dressing rooms at the training ground to be washed with disinfectant. Notices have gone up reminding players how germs can be passed and he has stopped a pre-training ritual where players shake hands. 'It is a good excuse not to shake hands before the game,' said Wenger. 'If you shake hands the viruses go around the league.'
With Andy Carroll fit, West Ham will be dangerous - especially at set-pieces. Wenger has won only 10 of his 24 duels with Sam Allardyce and his team have been defending poorly in the air. 'It was always intense,' said Wenger, when asked about his struggles against Allardyce's Bolton. 'It is a concentration challenge. You can have a virtual domination and lose the game.'West Ham are well balanced, a good mixture between direct and technical play. He is a good manager because he lasts."
'Our relationship is all right. I respect everybody, even if I don't look like I do.' Two years and eight months after Ryan Shawcross broke Aaron Ramsey's leg with a tackle Arsene Wenger branded horrendous, the Arsenal manager admits it may be time to forgive and forget. The Stoke defender has been called into the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland and Wenger said: 'What happened is what happened and it is down to Roy Hodgson to select the team.

'I think he (Shawcross) has improved as a player and he has cleaned up his act. 'You cannot convict a player for ever because of that. 'I didn't agree with the tackle. Again, it doesn't mean that the player has to suffer his whole life.' Ramsey lost the Wales captaincy on Friday when Chris Coleman passed the honour to Swansea defender Ashley Williams as part of the change he promised would follow last month's 6-1 defeat in Serbia.
'I'm a little bit surprised because it's a big decision to take an armband away from a player,' said Wenger.'I always felt he was a bit young to have such a responsibility but this could put maybe too much pressure on him. 'He will be a captain, for sure. He's at an age where you have to focus first on your game. Maybe this is a bit less responsibility and will help him play with a bit more freedom.'
