Singapore's Hidden History (2)

Heard some stories that amongst the Jap foot soldiers that fought in Malaya, many were conscripts from Japanese occupied Taiwan and Korea and these were the ones that were the most brutal as they had experienced similar when their own country fell to the Japs.

bro you are right. some of the jap troops were from korea and taiwan. so basically, some are chinese and korean.

bro,

if my memory serves me right, some of the members of the Dalforce were remembered at the Kranji War Memorial. Lt Adnan's name can be found inscripted on one of the columns too.

Er...... well.... yes....Dalforce volunteers who died - their names were inscribed on the walls, but as a whole, there is no Monument to them as a Unit.....

I addition to Dalforce, there were also many from other Volunteer units who perished.....

They came from all over Malaya...... Malaya and Singapore were one in those days..... I hope we will always remain as one people, because we fought as one nation once.......

The irony is that all these graves in the Kranji War Memorial all faced the Johore Bahru skyline, including the Palace and Municiple Building where Gen Yamashita located his HQ......

bro you are right. some of the jap troops were from korea and taiwan. so basically, some are chinese and korean.

Taiwanese troops in the Jap army were used as interpreters..... the Koreans were used as prison guards, they were as cruel, if not more so than the Japs because of their second class status in the Jap army.

The conquest of Singapore was accomplished by the 5th, 18th Divisions and Imperial Guards.

According to historian Timothy Hall, many of the soldiers responsible for atrocities in Singapore and Malaya were peasants from the west of Japan. The 5th division which backed the Kempei Tai in the Shook Ching killings was raised in Hiroshima and the 18th Division which carried out many of the executions came from Nagasaki.
(Timothy Hall, The Fall of Singapore 1942, Methuen Press, page 21)

Both the cities were atom-bombed. A strange coincidence, or Karma?

There are many names of roads and places connected with the History of Singapore (Jap Occupation).

However sad to say many of these names have disappeared either due to urban renewal or as victims of "Hanyu-Pinyin".

Nee Soon, HM Dockyards, Naval Base, Rotterdam Gate, Admiralty Gate, Canberra Gate, Bah Soon Pah Road, Genista Lane, Jalan Ulu Sembawang, Chong Pang Village, Kampong Wak Hassan, Sembawang, Jalan Kayu, Amoy Quee, Seletar, Chua Chu Kang, Lim Chu Kang, Yio Chu Kang, Jalan Tongkang Pechah, Jalan Haji Karim, Kim Chuan Road, Pasir Panjang Road and many more have in one way or other been connected with the past history of Singapore.

These are few and there maybe other names too. Take it collectively. It is still small as compared to the many new names (Yishun Street 22, 21, 11, etc...) within housing estates in Chong Pang, Yishun, Sembawang and many more.

These names should be preserved for posterity. There are mention of it in history books. But many have disappeared altogather from sight.

Lucky, due to public out-cry, Seletar was not changed to Shilida, Chua Chu Kang shed the spectre of CaiCuoGang.

Aukang succumbed to Hougang, Pek San Teng to Bishan, Nee Soon to Yishun.

Please do something to bring the glory of these names back. No one has the right to change the names.

Include such names within housing estates close to their original places. Do away with Street 11, 22, 33, etc as was done to Simei estate's 4 Princesses.

SINGAPORE Should remain as SINGAPORE and Not........................................!!!!!

What about Prataman? Japanese-Tamil?

I forget, even for the Old Man, Japanese could also be a language. If we assume Japanese or broken Japanese is a workable language for them, Japanese to English and vice versa is also possible.

How dare they sleep on 'sacred ground'??? the space between the first President & the first Eurasian President is RESERVED for "you know who, the name I can't mentioned" unless they have changed it to the top of the "three tombstones" aka MBS!!

Didn't know that there are people who are interested in Krangi War Memorial, have not been there for a while, used to go read the names, units etc.. and get a sense of who was fighting in the Pacific Theater of War!.

Few, would want to know...and think that the world goes round the PAP!:p

Bro, please don't be so harsh on these foreigners.

You do not know that one day they will become our Great Leaders.

Leave them there to warm the place.

Their day of taking over the reign of authority is nearing.

bro,

what intrigues me is the architecture of the monument, columns of infantry under the wings of the airplane, the mast of a ship in the centre column. names of the locals found amongst the walls of the columns, then we see the British and Anzac troopers having individual tombstone... how odd...

Jalan Ulu Sembawang Road is still there but very much shorter, Bah Soon Bah Road is still there, Kin Chuan Road. Hong Lim Complex should be "Fook Lam Tai Ha" to reflect the Cantonese Heritage aka "tau fu kai", the other would be, Shufu! is Soon Hock Road!, there used to be a Kampung there.

They should have name the roads around Sembawang, HM Dockyards, Rotterdam gate, Admiralty gate, Canberra Gate, Admiralty House Road, the HDB prectinct where Chong Pang is, Chong Pang Village!. What does that "Malysain Cow knows, he wasn't even born here! There are still many, for example an area in Yio Chu Kang, the Hokkien called it "boh sua tien", "wireless", many of these heritage of ours have been whitewashed by the MIWs!!

Malay troopers..... at least they were properly armed.

Dalforce volunteers were given shotguns and throw-away arms to face the Japs, and head scarves for identification. In the their first battle, they were attacked by the Aussies who could not tell the difference between Dalforce and the Japs..... friendly fire caused the first casualties.......

Everyone knows how Lt Adnan fought and died. Adnan was hung by his legs to a tree and repeatedly bayoneted before his mutilated body was burnt. Hw do we know this?

The only Malay Regiment survivor was Corporal Yaakob. In the turmoil of fighting, he fell on top of a pile of dead bodies and lay there motionless to escape death by the Japanese. He witnessed the gruesome final moments of Lieutenant Adnan whose body was never recovered.

Ever wondered why Lt Adnan was the only Malay war hero?

One little mentioned historical fact about the IJA's Malayan occupation was their ties with the Malays. It is actually for a good reason -- the backlash against Malays would tear countries and societies apart. I'll touch on this later...

Jap spies were in Malaya for many years prior to the campaign and they knew the gound. The pre-war Malay/non-Malay racial make up was about 1:1. They knew that to control Malaya, the Jap admin put in place a pro-Malay policy directive to win over the sultanate and the Malay people. The japs hated the Chinese, Eurasians and Brits for obvious reasons. The discrimination against Indians was less - Jap thought they would be useful for the planned India campaign thru Burma.

During the occupation, the Japs put Malays in positions of power. They even formed their own contingent (Giya Gun, Giya Tai) with japanese training and sponsorship. Many became the assistant police and were a constant target for the Communist guerillas (mainly made up of chinese). This caused much racial tension especially in peninsula.

The situation exploded when the Japs surrendered in Aug 1945. The communists walked out of the jungle and started their vendetta against collaborators. "People's trials" were staged where alleged informers and former policemen were publicly humiliated, tortured and killed to the crowds' delight. Many of the executed were Malays. In some parts, the persecution descended into racial clashes. Order and civility only restored when the returning British forces landed one month after.

Yes, many policemen -Malays (and chinese detectives) were killed after the Japs surrendered.

One of the cops' killing fields was outside the old Police Academy. This site was later developed as a condo..... a very haunted condo....

The residents reportedly called in the Taoist priests who suggested that the whole building be painted red........
