Singapore's Hidden History (2)

It showed resourcefulness of a future leader of men. Till today, many hoped to emulate him in how he sold his soul to save his neck.

And thereafter with such leadership qualities, he attracted the same brood of 'shit head saving one's own neck' kind of followers who sway like a lalang to the wind, to make it to President, just by riding on his coattails.:D

i tot that an elite guard division to form the spine of yamashita's corp?

The Imperial Guards were not exactly a super unit. In fact during the battle for Singapore, they wanted to withdraw back to Johore when their troops were caught in a sea of burning fuel at Kranji, only to find out that it was a false alarm.... only a small section of the sea was set on fire.

The Imperial Guards behaved like prima-donnas so much that they were told by High Command that they could "do anything they like" in the battle for Singapore ie... they were not required at all for the battle, thank you very much....

The Imperial Guards were also responsible for killing hundreds of wounded Australian prisoners-of war at Parit Sulong, and then burning the bodies in an attempt to hide the evidence.....

that was the IJA Guards 2nd infantry division. the fighting force of the IJA 25th army in the Malaya-Singapore campaign were the IJA 5th/18th divisions and Kwantung 56th division. 5th and 18th divisions were only providing security defense works in Southern China and 56th division were the fresh raw units from Manchuria prior to being reassigned to the 25th army. tank, artillery and air strength? i don't know.

the Japanese reserve army forces easily defeated the British troops in Malaya/Singapore.

Secret of Bukit Chandu

Everyone knows how Lt Adnan fought and died. Adnan was hung by his legs to a tree and repeatedly bayoneted before his mutilated body was burnt. Hw do we know this?

The only Malay Regiment survivor was Corporal Yaakob. In the turmoil of fighting, he fell on top of a pile of dead bodies and lay there motionless to escape death by the Japanese. He witnessed the gruesome final moments of Lieutenant Adnan whose body was never recovered.

The battle could have been different had Aussie Gen Gordon Bennet not instructed his field guns to stop shelling the Japs. Gordon Bennet gave specific instructions that the Aussie field artillery guns were only to support Aussie units, not the others. So the gunners on a hill nearby were not allowed to give support fire to the Malay Regiment on Bukit Chandu hill 205, even when help was sought.......

I rate Aussie Gen Bennet as one of WW2 worst generals, together with Gen Percival......

he did that to save ammo? he din realise all on the same boat?

Gordon Bennet was the prick who escaped from Spore in a boat if I not mistaken..

Percival and him were at odds with each other during the battle of Spore..

"it was the best option at that time, ( working as an interpreter aka hanjian during WW2 )." not i say one, lee wrote this line in his memoirs.

btw what was he translating anyway? he knew no Chinese dialects in the 1940s. the Japanese have their own English translators. was he really an interpreter?

It was "act of of god"...we gained, we suffered!

Interpreter by name, traitor by action.

Gordon Bennet was the prick who escaped from Spore in a boat if I not mistaken..

Percival and him were at odds with each other during the battle of Spore..

Bennett organised his own escape at the same time, he stopped his own officers escape plans saying that to "allow any large-scale unorganised attempts to escape would result in confusion and slaughter".

He then issued an order that all Australian units were to remain at their posts then followed it by, "All precautions must be taken to ensure the spirit of the ceasefire (Surrender, actually) is not destroyed by foolish action".

Bennet then ordered two days rations to be distributed to the troops before heading to the docks himself to run away without permission to Indonesia....

Gen Gordon Bennet ......the General who ran away..... His troops also fled the Jurong Line without permission, causing the defence of Western Singapore to collapse......

what the TO&E of a japanese division? two or three regiments? from the scant material i read on the japanese, it seems that their division strength abt the same as the KMT division, 7-8K men only unlike the 22K of the US marine division. sorry, i not familar with IJA army structure, so the IJA 25th army consist of 4 infantry divisions only? so that 28K men tops, not taking away the logistic troops that make up the divisions. is there an independent armoured brigade in support? reports of 50 tanks advancing down bukit timah seems to make that possible.

even the 5th and 18th were security troops, they bound had to see some action fighting the chinese resistance fighters. so that should place them on par with the british colonial troops. from where i stand, i can only see the angmo losing out in term airplanes plus sea blockade. other than these, from small arms to field artillery are still superior in grade than the IJA. the british .303 round beat the 6.5mm hand down. So instead of blaming the men, it the commanders that were incompetent.

Gordon Bennet and the Jap HQ

As part of their invasion plan, the Japanese 25th Army set up their HQ at the Johore Sultan's Green Palace, the Istana Hijau. The building was on elevated ground and had a 5 storey observation tower, giving it a bird's eye view of Singapore. The Municiple Building was also similarly used. A report reached Bennet's HQ that the Japs were using the Palace and Municiple building as observation posts and permission was sought to blast them with artillery fire. Gen Gordon Bennet refused to give permission

It was believed that his friendship with the Sultan clouded his decision making process. What would the Sultan think if his home was blasted by the Aussies?

Had permission been granted, Gen Yamashiita could have been killed... and the invasion of Singapore taken a different course.

a Japanese Divison ( Shidan ) has 22-25K troops.
a Chinese Nationalist Divison has 5-10K troops.
aprox 80-100K Japanese troops took part in the Malayan campaign.

the Japanese 5th and 18th Divisons had previously fought extensively in China, suffered some defeats and very heavy casualties. they were then sidelined and relegated to performing security duties, later reassigned to 25th Army.

The most recent guy who tried to emulate him got charged by COC and CAD. And both got married to a horse.

P Ramlee was from Singapore but went to Malaysia for fame and died a miserable lonely death there.

Malaysia claimed that he was her son.

They gave him a title and named a road after him.

While he was alive and suffering, Malaysia did not give a damn!!!

Anyway, they also claimed that batik and bak-kut-teh is theirs too

I am worried about Malacca Street, Pahang Street, Perak Road, Kinta Road, Johore Road and many other places in Singapore.

If Malaysia lay claim to these places, just like China claims that whatever is within the South China Sea is theirs, then we all jialat.

It was bcos the Poms lost the battle of Singapore that proved the whites were not as superior as one thought. I spoke to many POMs about that,,,they are proud that have a world crass navy, won many wars etc,,,but I say u surrendered to an army 1/3 their size who were out of ammo etc,,they cant believe it as it seems such defeats are not general knowledge in the POMMIE education system. And with PAP now sucking up to the whites like very before,,,whites still think they are superior,,,

Heard some stories that amongst the Jap foot soldiers that fought in Malaya, many were conscripts from Japanese occupied Taiwan and Korea and these were the ones that were the most brutal as they had experienced similar when their own country fell to the Japs.

Why did we forget those who died fighting the Japs? There is also no Monument for Dalforce, a group of Chinese volunteers who fought at Lim Chu Kang and Bukit Timah....

National Heritage Board sleeping ah?

bro,

if my memory serves me right, some of the members of the Dalforce were remembered at the Kranji War Memorial. Lt Adnan's name can be found inscripted on one of the columns too.
