STOMPer Brian is concerned that the smoke from the oil refineries at Jurong Island may cause health problems.

Said the STOMPer in his email:

"Thick smoke cloud from the oil refineries appearing above the sky of Jurong Island for the past few months.

"I am thinking whether it will cause environment problems or health problems and it seems that the authorities are not doing anything."

STOMP understands that the smoke is a result of flaring and is composed of mainly water, carbon dioxide and some carbon. Flaring is a procedure at performed at refineries to burn off excess gas, so that pressure does not build up in the equipment.

In Singapore, all flaring is subject to regulatory limits.
