World Cup 2014 Thread...

Italy have a fitness worry over goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon as they prepare to open their FIFA World Cup™ campaign against England on Saturday.

The Azzurri captain, a key member of the triumphant side of 2006, was absent from his scheduled appearance at the pre-match press conference at the Arena Amazonia. Antonio Candreva instead sat alongside head coach Cesare Prandelli, who confirmed Buffon had picked up an ankle knock during training on the eve of the Group D clash.

“He twisted his ankle very lightly,” Prandelli said. “It was a very, very light ankle twist. He is receiving therapy at the moment, but it is nothing serious.” Any deterioration in Buffon’s condition would certainly be a big blow to an Italy side already with full-back Mattia de Sciglio through injury.

When Steven Gerrard leads England out on to the dry surface of the Arena Amazonia on Saturday, he will be brimming with pride, and more importantly - he will be full of confidence that his men can beat Italy.

England have left no stone unturned in preparation for this Group D game. Sports scientists, video analysts, nutritionists and a world-renowned psychiatrist have been recruited to make sure England go into the game in the best condition possible.

Roy Hodgson and his 23-man squad have clocked up more than 12,000 miles travelling to Portugal, London and Miami to take part in friendlies against Peru, Honduras and Ecuador. Sweat pads, heat chambers, industrial fans and ice baths have been used to help the players be in the best physical shape when they step out into the sweltering Manaus heat.

Best to release the young ones on the Italians. Old chaps should warm the bench.

England should start with Raheem Sterling instead of Danny Welbeck. Let's see what this 19 year old kid can do.

Rooney will under perform (as usual) in this and every other WC he has played. Hasn't even scored ONE goal at a World Cup finals.
Hodgson should drop him (but he won't). Time for the youngsters to shine tonight.

totally agree
the pace of the game is fantastic
if you are old, you better retire
the speed and the stamina
soccer has gone a long way

Weather in Brazil will expose the old birds. No one is expecting England to do well. No expectation. Nothing to lose.

England vs Italy game will be close most likely a 1 goal game, Japan game should be a tie.....:D

I'm sisualai looking at Columbia and Uruguay to win by 3 goals or more :D

Players to look out for tonite:

Columbia: Juan Cuadrado of Fiorentina

Costa Rica: Keylor Navas, superstar goalie of Levante. :D

England and Italy will be a low scoring game 1 goal , japan game will be tie......:D

Won't be watching all the games, not going to spend 12 hrs stuck to the tv, first game at 12, 3,6,9,courtesy of CBC free viewing of all the matches for WC, will watch Uruguay and England play.....:D

can be quite a yawn this game...no goals.

England and Italy will cross swords in Manaus, the biggest city in the state of Amazonas, where the experts agree that battling the risk of dehydration will be a challenge all by itself. The searing temperatures and high humidity levels can cause excessive perspiration and a heightened loss of mineral salts, which research suggests has an impact on play. According to a recent study, a loss of water equivalent to two per cent of body weight can bring about a decrease in sporting performance close to 20 per cent. FIFA has taken precautions, however: should temperatures climb above 32C, the match referee, coordinator and doctor can decide to stop the game every 30 minutes to allow the players to recuperate and rehydrate.

Welcome to Manaus !!!
