AN INDONESIAN maid was arrested soon after an elderly woman was found dead in her terrace house on Farleigh Avenue, in Serangoon Gardens estate, early on Thursday morning. The 23-year-old maid had worked for the 87-year-old woman for barely a week, said neighbours. The woman, with a cut on her forehead, was found lying motionless on the floor in the living room after police received a call at about 3.15am. She was pronounced dead at 3.40am. The maid is said to have flagged down a taxi and told the cabby to call the police about the dead body. She then went back to the house to wait for police to turn up. Neighbours said they often heard the old woman scolding her maid and complaining about her performance. One of them, who would only be known as Madam Tan, 65, said the elderly woman had recently told her that she would send the maid home after eight months as she was not happy with her work. The maid is helping police in their investigations. The case has been classified as murder.

Maid accused of murder said to have lied about her age, now not likely to face the death penalty
21 Jan 2010
By Zul Othman

New evidence has emerged in the case of the Indonesian maid accused of murdering her elderly employer last November.
Investigators have learnt that Fitriah, who was believed to be 23 years old, had used an assumed name while working for the family of Madam Sng Gek Wah, who's 87.
A district court heard today that her real name is Vitria Depsi Wahyuni and she was 16 at the time of the offence.
As a result, the murder charges against the accused have been amended to take into account her age.
The now 17-year-old was initially charged under the name Fitriah.
Though the murder case will still go to trial once investigations are completed, it is understood that she may not be facing a capital charge.
Under the law, juveniles under 18 years of age cannot be sentenced to death.
Her lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed told MediaCorp that her age and real name were verified after investigators flew to her hometown in Indonesia to gather evidence.
The lawyer was hired by the Indonesian Embassy last month to defend her.
In the meantime, prosecutors have requested that Vitria continue to be remanded at Changi Women’s Prison for a child psychiatrist to examine her.
Madam Sng was found dead at her Farleigh Avenue home at 3.40am on November 26.
Paramedics said the elderly woman had no visible injuries other than a cut to her forehead.
Vitria, who had worked for Madam Sng for just six days, was said to have fled from the terrace house at about 3am.
She was arrested at the scene the same day.
Vitria’s case will be mentioned again in court on Feb 18.
