Rubbish. What slate of candidates did the opposition offer? Their strongest team fielded in Aljunied included one uneducated minority candidate. How to vote for them?
S'pore voters and opposition parties by and large are politically ignorant. LKY has successfully frightened the SG voters with DOOM and GLOOM stories.
Basically, what SG VOTERS fail to realise is that the CIVIL SERVICE runs the country just like the way the unmanned NE line MRT moves. With or without the GOVT, the day to day services would function like an autopilot which is what is happening now with PM Lee at the helm who is totally clueless & often silent , issues NO statements or not in S'pore whenever a crisis hits until some time later when the dust settles.
What the opposition fails to do is state clearly what policies or vision they have that is DIFFERENT from the incumbent, otherwise why change govt?
1. Would they slash Ministers salaries immediately should their party from the next govt?
2. What are they plans with regards to traffic management, public transport, health, defence, education, foreign workers etc ?
To just say they are there to only act as check and balance to the PAP is HOGWASH because the few Oppo MPs don't even have the resources to dig deeply and accurately without appearing foolish or getting sued for slandering outside of parliament. The people of S'pore have themselves to blame as they have even given too much power to the incumbent to change the constitution easily (>2/3 majority with PAP). What can 2 Opposition MPs really do? Mind you, every elections are so long apart (5 LONG years)
The WestMinster system of Parliament works best in a multiparty system and NOT a ONE PARTY state. At the rate SG is operating, it might as well be a COMMUNIST, FASCIST or DICTATORSHIP as Parliament is merely a rubber stamp bureacracy where MPs perform WAYANG or sleep in chambers as Cabinet already decides everything.

and as an earlier post pointed out, its the civil service that runs the country on autopilot. they are the ones churning out all the policy papers and research and executive summaries. all the minister has to do is choose between choice A or B that his perm sec has already laid out for him. against the spectrum of infinity, Choice A or B is equally likely to fail/succeed.
so stop dissing their paper qualifications, this argument is getting old and stale. its not working, at least on me and my boys. sooner or later, 2011, 2016 or 2021 etc, we, the young and restless, will out live and out vote the old farts who pledge their asses to the PAP.

I don't agree with you here. The mainstream opposition parties have no excuse for not being able to attract educated candidates. In fact, they do have educated Malays. To put a Certificate of Islamic Studies holder in their A team just makes a laughing stock out of them.
The pappies may have better qualified candidates to stand, but are they more qualified in EQ and understanding of people's psyche? Are they not more boh chup and arrogant?. Pappies who are definitely elitist and out of touch with the people!

I tend to agree with you. The elitist PAP MPs are no better than monkeys as they cannot think for themselves or act independently. These MPs monkey see, monkey do, following the Lees blindly, so no better than real monkeys!
